Subject Matter: Optimization of Body and Mind before Surgery


Time allotment: 20-30 minutes
General Objectives: At the end of 20 minutes health teaching the patient understands and demonstrates behaviors
that would enable him to enhance preparation for the upcoming surgery and that would also help him heal
faster, have less anxiety and post-operative complications.

-Sleep is essential for helping you maintain low


levels of inflammation and stress hormones in
your body (both are risk factors for delayed
wound healing and cancer progression.)
Additionally, not getting enough sleep can
also impair your immune system making you
more susceptible to infections.

Vitamin C: Contributes to the strength of
healing wounds and is necessary to build
collagen throughout the body. Vitamin C is also a
powerful antioxidant that supports the immune
response.
Vitamin A: Supports immune system
functioning and wound healing. Also required for
bone development.
Vitamin K & Zinc: Aids in clotting factor; An
important mineral used in enzymatic reactions
involved in tissue and wound healing (i.e.
collagen production), regeneration and repair.
Zinc also functions as an antioxidant in tissues.
Calcium: is a mineral that is necessary for life.
In addition to building bones and keeping them
healthy, calcium helps our blood clot, nerves
send messages and muscles contract.
Proteins: are building blocks of our body which
also facilitates in the recovery of bone, tissues
and muscles.
-Hygiene is defined as a set of practices
performed for the preservation of health.
Maintaining good hygiene and a clean
environment/surroundings help reduce the
spreading of pathogens and risk of infection.
