Educational
Philosophy

I think the goal of education is communal empowerment. Communal empowerment

aligns with the notion of praxis; an idea contributed to by philosophers such as Plato,
Aristotle, Heidegger and Freire, among others. Empowerment involves an individual
being nurtured and enabled to develop their own agencyso that they can be and do
what they desire. It serves to equip individuals to be able to practically apply their
knowledge or ideas. Communal empowerment therefore is the ripple effect that is
produced in a local community when an individual student has been empowered
through intentional teachingto develop in the following five key areas:
1. INTEGRATED KNOWLEDGE this is fostered through deeper, integrated
understandings of the world & humanity.
2. STRONGER THINKING PROCESSES these are fostered through the
development of critical and creative thinking.
3. SKILFUL USE OF EXPERIENCES this is fostered through reflection on and
eventually in experience.
4. A CLARIFIED ETHICAL FRAMEWORK this is fostered through transparent
and empathetic dialogue about different values, beliefs & ethical frameworks.
5. POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS & RELATIONAL SKILLS these are fostered
through modelled and supported relationships.
As a teacher I will work to do whatever I can to support the gradual empowerment of
my students particularly in these five key areas. For further information on this please
visit my website (http://hannahlouisecole.weebly.com/philosophy.html).

Mentoring
I currently mentor two young women on a voluntary basis. One is a
Year 11 student who is very interested in health and physical
activity and the other is a graduate Lawyer working for the Victorian
Office of Public Prosecutions. In the past I have mentored another
young woman who works as a Migration Lawyer. We meet monthly
to discuss and set goals in a range of areas including personal
identity, relationships, career development and health. The links
between values, thinking, emotions and behaviour are key to setting
these goals and understanding an individuals strengths and
limitations. All goals are underpinned by realistic, time-bound and
specific strategies. I very much enjoy these mentoring relationships.
