1.1.BMWApps
Apps,or"applications",havebeendevelopedforsmartphonessuchastheAppleiPhoneforsome
timenow.Theseapps(orapplications)areuserprogramsandareavailabletodownloadfromtheInterneteitherforfreeorforacharge.(forexamplefromtheAppleiTunesstore).Oncedownloaded,
thedatainstallsitselfonthesmartphone.Ifasmartphoneisconnectedtothevehicle,thesoftwareremainsonthesmartphoneandisnottransferredtothevehicle.Thisallowsnewfunctionstobedevelopedmuchmorequickly.Thereforedevelopmentcostsarelowandnotdependentonthelifecycleof
thevehiclesandtheirhardware(headunits,telephonecontrolunits,etc.).
AsfromDecember2010,customerscandownloadtheBMWConnectedAppfromtheApple
iTunesStoreandinstallitontheiriPhone.TheoriginalAppleUSBcableisusedtoconnect
thesmartphonetothevehicle.Additionalfunctionsareavailabletothecustomeroncethesmartphone
hasbeenconnectedtothevehicleusingthespeciallydevelopedsnap-inadapter.NoothersmartphonesoroperatingsystemsAppsarecurrentlysupportedbytheBMWApp.

WhenMTVbroadcastedthevideoclipVideoKilledTheRadioStar"onAugust1st,1981,thisheraldedtheeraofthevideoclip.YouTubelaunchedanInternetvideoportalonFebruary14th,2005
wheretheusercanviewanduploadvideoclipsfreeofcharge.TheInternetsitecontainsfilmandTV
clips,musicvideosandself-madefilms.Since2007,BMWGrouphasexpandeditsInternetpresence
withthesitewww.bmw.tvwherevideoclipsareavailabletothepublic(SeeBMWTVApp).Thefiles
canbedownloadedfromthereinwmvormp4format.

VideoclipsarethereforenowpartofoureverydaylifeandnowtheycanalsobeplayedinBMWvehicles.Toachievethis,avideoconnectionbetweenthevehicleandtheAppleiPhonehasbeendevelopedinordertobeabletoplaythevideoclipsfromthesmartphoneonthevehicle'sCID.

1.3.PlugIn
Smartphonesareassumingmoreandmoreimportanceamongconsumers.ThisiswhyBMWGroup
madethedecisiontosupporttheconnectionofthesedevicesandtheirsoftware(referredtoasapps)
tothevehicleelectricalsystem.ThePlugInfeatureallowstheusertoswitchfromthefamiliarBMWuserinterface(iDrivecontrollerinconjunctionwiththeCentralInformationDisplay)tothetraditionalAppleinterface.ThePlugInfeatureessentiallysupportstheiPodfunctionoftheiPhone.

1.4.ConnectedDrive
BMWAssistintelligentlyintegratesthedriver,thevehicleandtheenvironmentaspartofBMW'sglobal
ConnectedDriveinitiative.CombiningGPSlocationtechnologywithhands-freewirelesscommunicationBMWAssistconnectsyoutoaresponsespecialistforhelpwithalmosteverything,fromanemergencysituationtodirectionsandtrafficinformation.Onsuitablyequipped2007andlatermodels,the
BMWAssistSafetyPlanispartofUltimateService(includedcurrentlyatnocostfor4yearsfromyour
BMW'sin-servicedate).YourBMWAssistsystemalsoincludesBluetoothhands-freecallingcapabilitywithspeechrecognition.
TheinnovativeservicesthatcomewithBMWAssistensuremoresafety,comfortandInfotainmentoptionsinBMWvehicles.Forexample:Theintroductionofthefirstfully-fledgediPodinterfaceinthevehicleandHead-UpDisplayin2008.Theimplementationoftheremotefunctionswhichenabledcustomersforthefirsttimeunlockthevehicleviaaserviceprovider.TheimplementationofBMWSearch
whichallowsonlineaccesstothelatestweatherforecasts,anddeliversDOW,NASDAQandS&P500
stockindicesfromBloombergtotheiDrivedisplayrightinsideyourvehicle.Customerscanaccess
newsheadlinescoveringUS,world,sports,businessandBMWtopicsdirectlywiththetext-to-speech
functionavailableon2010andlatermodels.
