1.Onlyperformthisstepifyouhaveflywheelhousing(1).Removetwobolts(4)andremovecover(3)
fromflywheelhousing(1)inordertoopentheturninghole.
2.Removetheplugfromtiminghole(2)andinstallTool(D)inthetimingholeonflywheelhousing(1)
andflywheelhousing(5).Thetiminghole(2)islocatedabovetheturningholeonflywheelhousing
(1).UseTool(F)andTool(C)toturntheengineflywheelforflywheelhousing(1).Tool(E)canbe
usedforturningthecrankshaftforflywheelhousing(5).Turntheflywheelorthecrankshaftinthe
directionofenginerotation.Thedirectionofenginerotationiscounterclockwise,astheengineis
viewedfromtheflywheelend.Turntheflywheelorthecrankshaftuntilthetimingpinengageswith
thethreadedholeintheflywheel.
Note:Iftheflywheelorthecrankshaftisturnedbeyondthepointofengagement,theflywheelmustbe
turnedinthedirectionthatisreverseofnormalenginerotation.Turntheflywheelorthecrankshaftby
approximately30degrees.Thenturntheflywheelorthecrankshaftinthedirectionofnormalrotation
untilthetimingpinengageswiththethreadedhole.Thisprocedureeliminatesthebacklashfromthe
gearswhentheNo.1pistonisatthetopcenterposition.
3.Removethefrontvalvemechanismcoverfromtheengine.

4.TheinletandexhaustvalvesfortheNo.1cylinderarefullyclosedifNo.1pistonisonthe
compressionstrokeandtherockerarmscanbemovedbyhand.Iftherockerarmscannotbemoved
andthevalvesareslightlyopen,theNo.1pistonisontheexhauststroke.
Note:Whentheactualstrokepositionisidentified,andtheotherstrokepositionisneeded,removethe
timingpinfromtheflywheel.Thenturntheflywheelby360degreesinthedirectionofnormalengine
rotationandreinstallthetimingpin.
CalibratetheElectronicInjectionTimingWiththeElectronic
ServiceTool
RefertoElectronicTroubleshooting,"EngineSpeed/TimingSensorCalibrate"fortheproperprocedureto
calibratetheelectronicinjectiontiming.
Thistimingcalibrationshouldbeperformedwhenthefollowingconditionsexist:
ReplacedECM
Frontgearchanges
Replacedmajorenginecomponents
ThetimingcalibrationshouldalsobeperformedwhenyouareunabletocommunicatewiththeoldECMand
theECMhasbeenreplaced.
