The Presidential Debate

By: Nicole Johnson

Trump and Hillary,

The presidential nominees,
Seen debating live on TV,
Leaving Americans far from at ease.

Hillary Clinton,
The democratic nominee,
Who fights for those of the middle and lower classes that encounter financial difficulties,
Proposing to raise taxes on the rich allowing free healthcare and debt free college.
Family-Oriented
Unprejudiced
Feminist
Terms used to describe Hillary, whom longs for racial and gender equality for the American
Citizens treated unjustly,
As well as for families to receive paid leave by raising the national minimum wage,
Guaranteeing fair pay.

Trump,
The republican nominee,
Who says, Jobs are fleeing the country and that we must prevent them from leaving,
By reducing taxes on corporations 35%-15% to provide the American people with more jobs
Through these vast industries.
He fights for individual rights and stability,
Wishing for little change in economic mobility for those facing financial difficulty,
Looking out for those of the upper class diligently.

Businessman
Man of Law and Order
Patriot
Terms used to define Trump, whom looks to enforce stop-and-frisk because of alleged
Increasing hostility in African-American communities,
As well as for wishing to turn NATO into a matter of business in which allies must pay for
Assistance.

Logos,
The logical appeal,
Which was used predominantly by Hillary.
As she refers to events that had recently occurred
Regarding the criminal justice system and minorities,
Speaking about the, terrible tragedies in Tulsa and Charlotte.
Providing evidence that her position is fact-based and truthful,
Having regarded the reasoning behind the protests to support her claim;
That we must restore the trust between the community and police, have police use only
Particular lethal maneuvers when necessary, and tackle the plague of gun violence.
This gives off the impression that Hillary is a genuine and factual presidential candidate.

Pathos,
The emotional appeal,
Used by both Hillary and Trump.
When Trump is speaking about cyberattacks and how they are a definite threat to innocent
American citizens,
He begins talking about how his 10 year old son is so good at computers.
Conveying two messages:
That children will be caught in the crossfire of these hacks,

And that he is a parent and feels the need to attack,

Keeping his child from harms way, like any other parent in the case of a possible raid.
Hillary uses this in the beginning of her speech about the future of America,
Commenting on how when she asks herself this question she always thinks about her
Granddaughter.
The comments provided are sentimental
Causing audiences to be less judgmental,
Seeing as how the candidates are just as capable, in the case of Trump, of not being
Temperamental,
Rather of being caring in nature.

Ethos,
The ethical appeal,
Most evident with Hillary,
As she continues to refer to her history as a Senator and having dealt with Bin Laden.
This proves that she is plausible enough to lead a strike against terrorist organizations.
She will have such organizations pushed out of Iraq within a year.
Proving that she has enough experience to run the country,
Its quite clear.

Hillary and Trump

Whether using ethos, pathos, or logos
Are appealing to the audience for one simple reason,
To get people out of their slumps,
And to go vote for them.
After all, it guarantees them,
The presidential win.
