Overview

This course is intended for dentists who have limited or no experience with
the microscope and for those who have never previously used a
microscope. This course will improve your use of the microscope in every
day clinical situations by providing hands on exercises on extracted teeth
and tooth models. A team approach utilizing a chair side assistant will be
taken, including training in four-handed dentistry specific to a microscope
enhanced general practice.
The enhanced magnification and illumination provided by the dental
operating microscope can be applied to almost all clinical situations. These
include the diagnosis of caries, cracks and fractures, pit and fissure
restorations, all stages of cavity, veneer and crown preparations and
endodontic, periodontal and oral surgery procedures. In many dental
specialties the microscope is already considered the standard of care, and
its use in general practice is growing. By encouraging good posture the
microscope benefits the health of the dentist and the chair side assistant.
When combined with documentation facilities, the microscope is an
excellent tool for patient education, record keeping and legal defence.
Topics Objectives:
The microscope what features to look at
Adjusting and focusing the microscope
Dentist, assistant and patient positioning for optimum results and
improved practice
Endodontic access cavities, canal location, and instrumentation
Veneer preparation
Crown preparation
Documentation and record keeping
Adjust the microscope for comfort and effectiveness
Carry out clinical procedures using various levels of magnification
Utilize the chairside assistant to maximum benefit
Develop new skills using specialized instruments designed for the
microscope
Improve communication with the patients
Improve their treatment records
The course will start with a short presentation followed by a day of practical
exercises. Participants will operate on phantom heads using bench

mounted Zeiss microscopes. There will also be time spent in the clinical
area where students will experience the use of the scope in a clinical
setting.

Dental microscopy: the Synergy between the Operating microscope and
Ultrasonics in Endodontics
Endodontics has benefited realty from both the operating microscope and
ultrasonics. The purpose of this course is to discuss how, why and when to
use together these concepts to greatly improve endodontic outcomes in
both primary and non-surgical retreatment cases.
Aims and objectives:
A brief history of ultrasonics in endodontics
The rationale of using the ultrasonics in root canal irrigation
The rationale for and use of ultrasonics in active root preparation
under the operating microscope
The role of ultrasonics in the removal of separated instrument and
posts in root canals under the operating microscope.
The technique of removing root canal obturating materials with the
aid of both ultrasonics and the operating microscope.
Anticipated outcomes:
Participants will have an overview of the use of ultrasonics in
endodontics
They will understand he benefits and limitations of using ultrasonic
instruments in endodontics
They will understand how ultrasonic tips are used for different

applications.
They will understand the techniques and be able to use ultrasonics
to actively aid in the preparation of root canals when using an
operating microscope.
They will understand the techniques and be able to use ultrasonics
to remove root filling materials from root canals when using an
operating microscope.
Quallity controls:
All teachers on the Institute's courses are experienced professionals. All
participants are asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the
end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching
and value for money.
Teaching and assessment:
The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises
using the microscope and ultrasonics.
Lectures to include:
A brief history of ultrasonics in endodontics
The current use of ultrasonics in root canal irrigation.
The rationale for and use of ultrasonics in active root preparation
under the operating microscope
The role of ultrasonics in the removal of separated instrument and
posts in root canals under the operating microscope
The technique of removing root canal obturating materials with the
aid of both ultrasonics and the operating microscope
Demonstration and practical exercises to include:
The preparation of root canals using a combination of hand, rotary
and ultrasonic instrumentation with the aid of the operating
microscope
The removal of root filling materials from root canals using
ultrasonics with the aid of the operating microscope.

Throughout the course, you will use the latest operating microscopes and
learn to:
Improve operator ergonomics to decrease fatigue
Use shadow less lighting to aid diagnosis and treatment

Identify elusive cracks and obscure root canals

Improve patient communication and build patient trust
Enhance patient care and improve manual dexterity
Create effective teamwork and enhance assistant interest and
involvement
Refine clinical techniques under the guidance of experienced
specialists
Set up the operating microscope for optimum performance
The course will introduce participants to the use of operating microscopes.
In addition to theoretical training, participants will spend time becoming
accustomed to working with and using microscopes to examine teeth
under magnification.
Practical training will also take place in a clinical setting. Participants will
also be able to carry out clinical procedures in a skills laboratory such as
cavity preparation, crown preparation and endodontic canal location.
DAY ONE brings the students through familiarization with the microscope
and its parts and then parfocalizing the microscope (adjusting the occulars
so that the right and left eyes are focused on one object relative to each
other).
Whether you are a restorative dentist, endodontist or periodontist, the
ability to operate a handpiece in the form of crown preparation will give you
excellent eye-hand coordination that can be applied to any discipline of
dentistry. Therefore all students go through a sequence of anterior veneer
preparation, then anterior crown preparation.
The morning of the first day the students proceed on the either a maxillary
left posterior tooth for the right handed or a maxillary right posterior tooth
for the left handed. In the afternoon of the first day the students switch to
the contralateral maxillary posterior tooth.
DAY TWO starts with a review of posterior maxillary preparations and then
to mandibular molar crown preparations both direct and indirect (left molar
for the right handed student or right molar for the left handed student).
After a lunch break, the opposite side mandibular molar is prepared.
Finally, gingival grafting procedures are reviewed for any students wishing
this discipline.

Whether you own or are contemplating purchasing a dental microscope,

this intense hands-on course will immediately impact your practice. You will
return to your practice prepared to successfully integrate the microscope
into your esthetic restorative dentistry, efficiently and effectively.
Participants will learn

Participants will focus on clinically relevant information that is needed to
provide successful advanced procedures for esthetic, restorative and
endodontic practices, and use that information as they perform their
dentistry with the aid of the clinical microscope.
As the participant concentrates on the requirements for incorporating the
clinical microscope into their daily dental practice with tooth preparations,
access for endodontic treatments, and instrumentation for periodontal

procedures, both on the bench and in the mouth of a simulated patient,

their skills advance to a new level. When you leave this course you will be
