Major Dimensions

The total height of the circuit breaker is approximately 5.1 m and the width is
approximately 4.2 m. The pole distance is 1.75 meter and the total mass is 1460kg.
More dimensions and masses can be found in the Appendices.
2.2

Material properties

The material properties of the different parts of the breaker are summarized in Table 1.

* The top and bottom plates of the support legs have a yield strength of 355 MPa while the
rest of the support legs have a yield strength of 220 MPa.
** All weights are given for one piece, e.g. the weight of one support insulator is 116 kg.
*** Given by a series of tests as described in section 2.2.
The strength at the bottom of the support insulator is calculated from a series of tests that
has been performed, see Appendix F. Three different test values are available and their
respective braking moment at the bottom of the support insulator is 42.639 kNm, 44.414
kNm and 42.748 kNm. Based on these values the mean value, , is 43.267 kNm and the
standard deviation, , is 0.9948 kNm. Hence, the breaking strength at the bottom of the
support insulator is set to 40.28 kNm 40 kNm (obtained by taking -3).
2.3

Bolt joints

The connection of the support legs, the pole beam, the mechanism houses and the breaker
columns are achieved by the following bolt joints (all bolts have a strength class 8.8):

The support legs are bolted to the foundation with four M24 bolts each.

The support legs are bolted with four M20 bolts each to the pole beam.

The mechanism houses are bolted to the pole beam with four M16 bolts each.

According to [3], the allowable stresses in the type of bolts used are:

303 MPa with respect to tension/compression (allowed)

206 MPa with respect to shear (allowed)

These stresses are based on the gross area of the bolts.

The bolts fulfill the requirements in [3] if the combined utilization factor, U, is less than
one. The combined utilization factor is given as:

U=
allowed

+
allowed

(1)

Calculated bolt forces in x-, y- and z-directions (RX, RY and RZ) for each bolt are
presented in Appendix D.
For the bolt joints between the support legs and the pole beam, the axial forces in the
bolts calculated with FE-analysis are increased due to prying. The prying effect is
described in Figure 2 where it is shown that the axial forces in the bolts connecting the
support legs and pole beam should be scaled with a factor 2.23. In Figure 2, a sketch of
the actual bolt joint as well as a simple free body diagram together with the moment
equilibrium equation that governs the relationship between RZ and RZ' are shown.
The actual axial bolt forces in the bolts (including the prying effect) are denoted by RZ'
which as described above is 2.23 times RZ for the bolts connecting the support legs and
the pole beam. For the other bolt joints RZ' = RZ.
The stresses in the bolts are calculated with the following equations:

RZ '
, =
A

RX 2 + RY 2
A

ANALYZED LOAD CASE

The verification according to IEC TR 62271-300 AF5 corresponds to the following load
cases:

Load Case 1:
o 100% earthquake in x-direction
o 50% earthquake in z-direction
o Terminal force
o Own weight
o Wind load (10 m/s in positive x-direction)

Load Case 2:
o 100% earthquake in y-direction
o 50% earthquake in z-direction

Seismic analysis by means of Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA)

The structures response to earthquake has been calculated using Resopnse Spectrum
Analysis and the Required Response Spectra (RRS) of [1], also given in Figure 3. The
responses in all three directions (X, Y and Z) are calculated separately and then combined
as described in section 3.3.
The result from the eigenmode calculation that is part of the response spectrum analysis
is presented in Appendix C. 55 eigenmodes have been used in all three directions, which
correspond to 91.6% participating mass in x-direction and 90.1% participating mass in ydirection.
Responses from different modes are combined using Complete Quadratic Combination
(CQC), see equation (3) [2].

Terminal Force, Dead weight and Wind load

The static terminal forces are applied as shown in Figure 4. These are the forces given in
IEC62271-100 for rated voltage 100-170 KV and rated current 2500-4000 A. These
forces are multiplied with a factor 0.7 in order to account for a wind force of only 10 m/s,
as stated in IEC TR 62271-300. The resulting terminal forces applied to the model are
shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4: The static terminal loads

The breakers own weight is taken into account and the gravitation is 9.81 m/s2 in negative
z-direction.
The wind load is applied on the structure in positive x-direction for load case 1 and in
positive y-direction for load case 2. The wind loads applied correspond to a wind speed
of 10 m/s.
3.3

Combination of loads

The responses from the earthquake components are combined using SRSS. The terminal
loads, wind load and dead weight are then added with unfavorable sign.

RESULTS

Detailed results can be found in the Appendices. Some important results are summarized
in this chapter.
4.1

Bolt joints

As were discussed in chapter 2.3, the bolts are fulfilling the demands if the combined
utilization factor is less than unity. The combined utilization factors for the bolts are

Porcelain insulators

The calculated maximum moments in the insulators together with their corresponding
safety factors are summarized in Table 4 (load case 1) and Table 5 (load case 2). The
calculated moments are given by equation (5).
M calc = M x2 + M y2

(4)

Calculating the moment this way yields a conservative safety factor.

The rated strength at the bottom of the breaker insulator is 14 kNm and the rated strength
at the top of the support insulator is 11 kNm.
