COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a course for students whose first language is not English. The course
includes reading, paragraph writing. Grammar and sentence structure. It
aims at enabling students to acquire basic, oral and written communicationIt is designed for non-English majors to develop spoken and written skills as
well as to understand written tests at a beginners level.
OBJECTIVE
Develop the ability to write and understand written texts and speak for
different purposes and especially for the Civil Engineering field.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
This course is taught using a variety of instructional methods, lecture, class
discussions, small group work, and project creation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Write clear, concise, and grammatically correct sentences in English


Ask and answer typical classroom questions
Recognize and correct common errors in written and spoken English
Make simple oral and written presentations in English
Write clear, well-structured and concise paragraphs in their field of
study

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Each student has to fulfill the following requirements of the course
Actively participate in classroom discussions by asking questions and
giving their comments or opinions whenever required by the
instructor
Conduct internet and library research, revise class notes and
handouts, study the textbook and perform all other activities as
required.
Students are expected to comply with the university-wide
requirements for academic achievement.
Students are expected to be responsible for their own work.
Presenting another individuals work as ones own and receiving
excessive help from another individual will qualify as a violation of
academic integrity. Plagiarism is cheating.
If you are absent from an exam (quiz, mid-term, or final exam) , you
will not be allowed to repeat it unless you are granted an excuse of
absence by the instructor.

WEEK 2. Skills work reading and speaking. Listening and writing. Every day
English: places in

WEEK 3. UNIT 9. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Grammar: saying years was/were
born, past simple irregular verbs.
WEEK 4. Vocabulary: people and jobs, irregular verbs. Skills work
Vocabulary and reading.
WEEK 5. Everyday English: whens your birthday?, months of the year,
saying dates. TEST ONE.
WEEK 6. UNIT 10. WE HAD A GOOD TIME! Grammar: Past Simple regular
and irregular, questions and negatives.
WEEK 7. Short answers. Vocabulary: weekend activities sports and leisure.
Skills work, listening and speaking, writing. Every day English: filling in
forms.
WEEK 8. UNIT 11. WE CAN DO IT!. Grammar: can/cant, requests and
offers. Vocabulary: verbs and adverbs, verbs and nouns that go together.

Skills work reading and listening. Everyday English: whats the problem?
TEST TWO.
WEEK 9. UNIT 12. THANK YOU!. Grammar: want, like and would like.
