1. The Meaning of Global Warming/Climate Change
Global warming is the phenomenon of increasing average air temperatures near the
surface of Earth over the past one to two centuries. Climate scientists have since the
mid-20th century gathered detailed observations of various weather phenomena (such
as temperatures, precipitation, and storms) and of related influences on climate (such
as ocean currents and the atmospheres chemical composition). These data indicate
that Earths climate has changed over almost every conceivable timescale since the
beginning of geologic time and that the influence of human activities since at least the
beginning of the Industrial Revolution has been deeply woven into the very fabric
of climate change.

2. Natural Steps
The Natural Step is a non-profit organization founded in Sweden in 1989 by
scientist Karl-Henrik Robrt. Following publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987,
Robrt developed The Natural Step framework, setting out the system conditions for
the sustainability of human activities on Earth; Robrt's four system conditions are
derived from a scientific structured understanding of the socio-ecological system,
including the laws of thermodynamics and social studies.
Currently The Natural Step has offices in 11 countries and numerous associates and
ambassadors around the world. The Natural Step's Theory of Change is at the core of
its activities and is the breeding ground for individual, organizational and multistakeholder programs like Adding Sustainable Value and Sustainability Transition
Labs.

3. Our Contributions
A. To make global warming/climate change happen
Global warming/climate change can also be caused by human activities, such as
the burning of fossil fuels and the conversion of land for forestry and agriculture.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, these human influences on the
climate system have increased substantially. In addition to other environmental
impacts, these activities change the land surface and emit various substances to the
atmosphere. These in turn can influence both the amount of incoming energy and
the amount of outgoing energy and can have both warming and cooling effects on
the climate. The dominant product of fossil fuel combustion is carbon dioxide, a
greenhouse gas. The overall effect of human activities since the Industrial
Revolution has been a warming effect, driven primarily by emissions of carbon
dioxide and enhanced by emissions of other greenhouse gases.
The build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has led to an enhancement of
the natural greenhouse effect. It is this human-induced enhancement of the
greenhouse effect that is of concern because ongoing emissions of greenhouse
gases have the potential to warm the planet to levels that have never been
experienced in the history of human civilization. Such climate change could have
far-reaching and/or unpredictable environmental, social, and economic
consequences.
B. To stop global warming/climate change as a Chemical Engineer
As a Chemical Engineer, One way to avoid dangerous global warming/climate
change is to take immediate steps to implement the wide variety of solutions that are
already at hand. There are many cost-effective opportunities to achieve significant
reductions in carbon pollution, including promoting more energy efficient homes
and businesses, improved industrial practices, and cleaner sources of energy.
Another way we can do to stop global warming/climate change is by greening the
transportation. A variety of solutions are already at hand, such as improving
efficiency (miles per gallon) in all modes of transport, switching to low-carbon
fuels, and reducing vehicle miles traveled through smart growth and more efficient
mass transportation systems.
4. 10 Chemical Engineering Contributions in Daily Life
Chemical Engineers over the years have created many useful products and many
achievements. Chemical Engineers have contributed a lot of things we may use on

our daily life, here are 10 examples of Chemical Engineering contributions on our
daily life:
a) Food and Drink
In fulfillment of the need for food and beverages, chemical engineers are
required to create food that is not only rich in nutrients and contains
substances that the body needs, But should also think about the taste of the
food. Chemical engineering is also required in order to create food that can
last longer with preservatives are safe. Chemical engineers can also make the
process of making food that is effective and efficient, secure and maintain the
environment.

b) Fuel
Fuel is a source of energy and energy is needed by humans. The role of
chemical engineering is to create a fuel source of energy that is needed by
humans. Chemical engineering will turn natural crudes into fuels that are
ready to be used by humans, through the refining process, etc. Other than that,
chemical engineers are also creating alternative energy such as synthetic fuels
that are safe and environmentally friendly.

c) Electronics
Electronic device today has become a useful tool for mankind. Almost every
human activity is never separated from electrical appliances. Chemical
engineering has an important role in the electronic world, for example in terms
of material development and production, Equipment design, manufacture
microchips, etc. The point is that chemical engineering creates long lasting

components

d) Drugs
The drugs on the market, are derived from a very long chemical process. The
role of chemical engineers starts on the study of natural ingredients, namely
the extraction of natural materials, later the pharmacy would examine the
usefulness and benefits of the object, then the chemical engineers will play a
role in the manufacture of these drugs, either small scale or large scale or
industrial.

e) Textiles / clothing
As humans, we need clothing to cover our body. Due to the necessity of
clothing, chemical engineers have an important role in creating a fabric or
synthetic materials that have superior properties. Chemical engineers also play
a pivotal role in the process of making the textile industry, the development or
supervisory of production processes, and many more.

f) Waste Handling

During a certain process industry will always generate poisonous waste, some
wastes needs to be processed first before being discharged into nature or else it
could contaminate the ecosystem, there is also the waste that can be directly
discharged into nature. The role of a chemical engineer is to perform a
processing on the hazardous wastes in order to not destroy nature and the
environment.

g) Fertilizer
In the world of agriculture fertilizers has a very important role, Fertilizers,
when added to the soil, makes the soil more productive. They can also be used
for the reclamation of saline and alkaline soils. They also supply necessary
phosphorus, nitrogen or potassium to the soil. chemical engineering
contributes to creating fertilizers that can make a big plant, lots of fruit, pestresistant, etc.

h) Plastics
In our daily life, almost all of the things we see are made of plastics or in other
words polymer. Which is why the creation of polymers by chemical engineers
changes our lifestyles. We use plastic products to help make our lives cleaner,
easier, safer and more enjoyable. You will find plastics in the clothes we wear,
the houses we live in, and the cars we travel in.

i) Researching
A chemical engineering graduate can also become a researcher. With the
knowledge that he can, an undergraduate chemical engineering are expected to
find new innovations to process the raw materials into finished goods. In

addition, he is also able to find ways to improve the work efficiency of a

process or a chemical reaction.

j) Mining
One of the fields that a chemical engineer can also apply is mining. The
processing of raw minerals which can still be processed in such a way by a
chemical engineering degree for later use in their daily lives.

5. Roles in Local/Global As a Chemical Engineer

If I graduate as a chemical engineer, three contributions that I will do on a local
or global scale are:

a)

Oil and Gas

Considering the source of the petroleum companies so much, but many are not
yet processed. I want Indonesia to better maximize the petroleum source in

Indonesia. So out expectation that 100% of our petroleum resources can be

realized and are managed by the companies themselves.
b)

Waste management

Secondly I want to create a waste management system better so that most of the
garbage, especially inorganic waste in order to be recycled and reused back to
human needs. Since most waste in Indonesia are managed in a way that it causes
more pollution when burned even though if we process the waste first it can be
utilized in a more optimal and be used back for other purposes.
c)
Drugs
Lastly, I want to contribute to developing the company's high-tech herbal remedy
and can be mass produced. Because all this time medicine herbal drugs that are
more expensive. With the ability of a chemical engineer that I have learned I want
to make a more efficient production of herbal medicines so that all people can
benefit consumer.

6. Zero Waste
Zero Waste is a philosophy and a design principle for the 21st Century. It
includes 'recycling' but goes beyond recycling by taking a 'whole system'
approach to the vast flow of resources and waste through human society.
Zero Waste maximizes recycling, minimizes waste, reduces consumption and
ensures that products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into
nature or the marketplace.
Zero Waste makes recycling a powerful entry point into a critique of excessive
consumption, waste, corporate irresponsibility, and the fundamental causes of
environmental destruction.
