Join The Fun; Shop Small On Saturday

Make a difference in the community by
shopping local on Nov. 26 & every day
by Mary Shapiro

Local independently-owned businesses can be a hot spot for savvy holiday shoppers who want to snag some
great deals and support the economy
in their hometowns, especially on
Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26.
Since its inception in 2010, Small
Business Saturday has positioned itself as the neighbor-friendly little guy
alternative to the big-box behemoths
of Black Friday and the e-commerce
sales of Cyber Monday.

The Bug Store

displays some
of its eclectic
merchandise
outside its
shop at 113 W.
Argonne Ave.
in Downtown
Kirkwood.

Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick

and mortar businesses those that
are small and local. It is an opportunity for consumers to circulate locally-earned dollars back into the local
economy.
With many shops offering special
offers and promotions on Saturday, its
a good time to discover the local business districts.

Plenty Of Shopping In Webster Groves, Kirkwood

from page 15
Shopping In Downtown Kirkwood
Donna Poe, executive director of the Downtown
Kirkwood Special Business District, said many of
stores will be offering special offers on Saturday, plus
visitors will also be entertained.
Students from the Kirkwood School of Rock will
perform in Ken Connor Park, across the street from
the Kirkwood Train station, from noon to 1 p.m.,
weather permitting, she said. And Summit Produce
and Plants with have a live reindeer at Kirkwood
Farmers Market Christmas Tree Lot and Gingerbread Shoppe from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Poe said the district is mostly made up of small
businesses.
Those merchants appreciate the support from the
community, she said. Our district, with so many
long-established and new boutiques, gift stores and
more, is special.
Unique buildings and historic architecture play
a part, but our districts personality and types of
businesses make us different, Poe said. Theres a
positive spirit of all those here. Everyone is trying to
make the district more attractive.
Also, many of our business owners serve on a
city committee or are involved with the Kirkwood
School District or other schools in the area, donating
to school and other organizations fundraisers, Poe
added.
Many district business owners also live in Kirkwood or nearby, she said.
When people buy online, none of the money benefits their community, Poe said. But, when you shop
in a local store, that sales tax revenue goes to local
government, you contribute to a sense of community,
and you help create and keep local jobs.
Also, local stores are very creative in decorating
for the holidays, Poe said. People are missing out
on the fun when they shop online.

trict, various activities will also be taking place on
Saturday, said Holland Saltsman, owner of the Novel
Neighbor, at 7905 Big Bend Blvd., and a board member of the Old Orchard Taxing District.
The Novel Neighbor, for instance, will have five local authors selling books, offer extended hours from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m., have Winnie the Pooh on hand to greet
kids and do a free craft with them, and provide free
totes while supplies last.
The event is vital, she said.
With such a push from major corporations blast-

Oh what fun...

ing ads, its important that people remember money

they spend by shopping locally goes back into their
community, Saltsman said. The big online stores,
for instance, arent paying local taxes, benefiting employees who live here, or supporting causes in the
community.
Small businesses try to be involved in giving
back, she added.
Shopping local also encourages more stores to look
at the area as a great location, she said.
Shoppers dont have to go outside their community to get some great deals, said Jean Scholtes, owner
of Kind Soap Company at 20 Allen Ave. and a member of the Old Webster Trade Association.
Small Business Saturday reminds the community how nice it is to have small businesses where you
live, she said. Money spent here doesnt go to a faroff corporate headquarters.
Her own business on Saturday is offering specials
such as, for those spending $75 on Kind products
will receive a $25 gift card.
Small businesses focus on customer service
were good at getting to know customers and their
needs and likes, to customize their shopping experience, Scholtes said.
And Small Business Saturday lets people explore
their own neighborhood.
Our association has so many types of businesses clothing boutiques, gift stores, restaurants and
more, she said. Your purchases are unique and different to what youd find at big chain stores.
Pat Richards, owner of Embroider the Occasion at
124 W. Lockwood Ave., is also a member of the Old
Webster Trade Association and is chair of the citys
Business Development Commission.
The mission of the BDC is to ensure businesses thrive here, she said. We talk of how important shopping small is, not just on one Saturday of
the year but encouraging the community to support
hometown businesses all the time.
Her own shop will be giving away totes that
