PREFACE
My earlier booksManagement Principles was for the Management and Engineering students
at the undergraduate level; and Management Principles and Practices was for the Masters level.
The current book Human Resource management: A Dynamic Approach focuses on the Human
Resource aspect of management. This book is primarily for those who are preparing themselves
for an exciting, rewarding, and enriching career in Human Resource aspect of management.
In recent years, this eld of specialization is getting popular and due to this popularity many
students prefer to specialize in Human Resource Management.
Although the principles of management and, particularly, the Human Resource Management
are brought out and discussed in the initial chapters of this book, the practices built on such
principles are discussed and illustrated from time to time. Those who read the book get an
idea as to how such principles form a solid foundation to the practices in the eld of Human
Resource Management. Without such principles, the practices wither away because they do
not make sense or the students go away with vague understanding. Any practice which is
built on solid principles will be effective and efcient. While effectiveness is achieved through
attainment of targets, objectives, and goals, the efciency is accomplished through combining
of various resources available to an organization, especially, the human resources. Harrington
Emersons proposed twelve principles of Efciency that were according to him, intensely
practical, tested, and extremely successful. Without principles, practices are just hollow bricks
and without practices, the principles remain as principles. In this book, Human resource or
management principles, provide a strong basis for practices and this relationship is very essential
for understanding the Human resource management and its practices. Thus, dynamism is
brought into the understanding of Human Resource Management.
This book gives an opportunity for the readers, budding as well as experienced managers,
teachers, trainers, consultants, and students with references, issues, and situations they can
identify while preparing themselves in gaining knowledge, insights in Human Resource
management. This book provides an opportunity for the readers to examine the Western human
resource practices in Indian and Asian context wherever possible and applicable. The examples,
illustration, and case studies are taken from the actual situations (disguised at times to main
the anonymity and condentiality), in companies in Asia and particularly in India. Such an
enriching experience may not be available to the readers when they rely on Human resource
management books solely written with Western context, issues, and markets in mind.

vi Human Resource ManagementA Dynamic Approach

A Functional Approach is taken by the introduction of various human resource functions,
managers perform. A well-accepted denition of management states that, management is getting
things done through other people. The focus of this denition seems to be on human resources.
In essence, every managers core responsibility is for the people he or she manages. A manager
does not do things. He or she makes things happen through people. A manager needs certain
qualities, knowledge and skills to perform various functions to make things happen in his or her
specialization, namely, the Human Resource Management. The functions emphasize the core
areas of securing and maintaining the workforce. The functions included in these core areas are:
Human Resource Planning, Recruitment of Potentials, Selecting and Placing the candidates on
the job, Training of new and existing employees, Developing managerial personnel, Assessing
employee performance, Developing a career path for employees to sustain them, Employee
compensation to motivate them for better performance, Maintaining employee-employer
relations, Handling conicts and grievances, Employee benets and services, Designing incentive
systems, handling legislative measures to reinforce the Human resource management practices,
and showing concern for social ethics and responsibilities.
This book also includes some special topics such as Behavior modication and reinforcement,
Self - fullling prophecy, the Ego states and Transactions, Creativity and innovation, Dealing
with Defensive behavior, Paradigm shifts, Participation and Empowerment, Emotional
Intelligence, Benchmarking for First in class performance, Listening skills, Competency,
Managing Mid-career crisis, and Managing bosses. The Japanese management practices relevant
to human resource management practices. These topics may not form the core of the book
but chosen to enhance the interest of the students and bring them up to date in understanding
Human Resource Management.
Each chapter is provided with a mini-case which gives some practical exercise to apply what
is said in the chapter. Such cases can be used as tutorial exercises or group assignments. They
provide an opportunity to put the theoretical aspects learnt in the chapter into practice via
case study discussions. Wherever applicable, research ndings are incorporated into the text
to back up the techniques and methods discussed. Such ndings are also drawn from Indian,
Asian environment through research work carried out by Indian, Asian, and Western scholars,
researchers, and noted practitioners. These concepts, principles, techniques, and methods used
in research help to clarify matters for the Indian and Asian readers, and an opportunity to
validate these ndings in relation to his or her own situational work experience.
Figures, diagrams, and illustrations are used to sum up the material being discussed. Thoughtprovoking questions are also raised in the text to help the reader instantly relate the material to
familiar situations or own thinking on the subject being studied.
From time to time, whenever and wherever possible and applicable, students are encouraged
to put down their ideas on the topic being discussed. Such exercises give an opportunity to test
out their application skill. This ability, if further enhanced through discussion questions and
experiential exercises presented at the end of each chapter. The reference list provided at the
end of the chapter directs interested students to further their interests by researching on the
source of information.
