Dear Recruiters,
It gives me immense pleasure to introduce the eleventh batch of IIMAs Armed Forces Programme (AFP).
Participants are undergoing a six month fully residential course in Business Management at IIM Ahmedabad.
The programme is designed to facilitate transition of these experienced and talented leaders from uniformed
service into senior and mid-level positions in business. The current batch of 56 Officers is a mix of serving and
retired Officers of significant experience in diverse fields. These Officers have outstanding career records in fields
ranging from general administration to technical roles and operational responsibilities. They bring onboard
proven leadership experience, consistent track records, enviable dedication and loyalty to their organisation.
They possess competence in the domains of operations, administration and human resource management
which have been acquired, tested, and proven under demanding conditions and challenging circumstances.
The current course, AFP15, is the first batch which has been inducted after clearing a
competitive selection examination conducted by IIMA.
The core areas of management covered in the course include Corporate Finance, Business Analytics, Economics,
Strategy, Operations and Project Management, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resources, and
Communication. The programme has further honed their skills in corporate management and transformed
this treasure house of experience into a set of managers well equipped to add value to the organisations they
will join in the near future. I am certain that they will be invaluable assets to their respective organisations due
to their capabilities, commitment, and self-motivation.

We are pleased to present

the eleventh batch of 56
participants from the Armed
Forces Programme (AFP)
undergoing a rigorous, sixmonths, fully residential
programme in Business
Management. This batch
of AFP is unique as, for
the first time, they have
been selected into this
programme through
a competitive process
conducted by IIMA
AFP at IIM Ahmedabad is specially designed for Officers of the Armed Forces. The
programme reorients and prepares these military leaders to add value to organizations
in an increasingly complex and demanding corporate environment. This education and
training sharpens their skills and equips them further to take on challenges of business
and non-military organizations. Each Officer participating in this programme has rich
experience and possesses proven expertise in specific areas. Across the batch, these areas
range from Project Management, Operations, Supply Chain Management, Finance,
Accounting, Information Technology, Law, Human Resource Management and Security.
Through a series of the foundation and specialized courses in management, the programme
curriculum has provided detailed exposure to the current business environment; and
strong conceptual and analytical abilities to complement the participants knowledge
and expertise. The pedagogy at IIMA, primarily using case studies, enhances domain
knowledge of management, and knowledge about the corporate world and industry.
Exposure to nuances of management has been further bolstered through projects,
assignments, industry visits and interactions with guest speakers from industry.
Participants from recent batches of AFP have repeatedly surpassed expectations of
recruiters in knowledge, ability, and on the job performance. We are certain that the
corporate sector would gain immensely from the rich and diverse experience of these

AFP is a six months full time residential

Forces.

How the Armed Forces officers have been metamorphosed

into their new role as corporate warriors by IIMA
A balanced mix of faculty comprising academicians, researchers and professionals drawn from the public/
private sector represent the right enablers for the best minds in the country. Following the case study method
of interactive pedagogy, the learning is virtually experiential. In areas where new skills are imparted to
participants, classroom discussions are aided by simulating techniques and real life scenarios.

It has been a pleasure to interact with
the AFP15 participants both during the
course on Economic Policy where I was
the Instructor as well as in conversations
outside the class. I found them to be
enthusiastic and quick learners. They
quickly disproved a hypothesis I had at
the beginning of the course that those
with some years in the Armed Forces
will be accustomed to following orders
and will be weak on initiative. At the
end of each session an assignment was
declared and the participants had to
make a presentation on that in the next
session - the range of logical arguments
offered by them on the path of Exchange
Rates, Interest Rates, and Budgetary
& Monetary Policy showed a deep
interaction with foundational issues
within a short span of time. These hardworking, sharp, flexible, and committed

Operations Planning and Execution

has always been a forte of Officers of
the Armed Forces. The adaptability of
these Officers in handling the complex
and challenging situations on and off
the field makes them ideally suited
for managing most of the business
situations at ease. Their conventional
strengths in managing teams, logical
ability, and conclusive deductionshave been further honed with business
acumen by the courses at IIMA. I
am sure that these Officers would be
appreciable assets for the organizations
in the field of Operations, Logistics,
Supply Chain Management and Project
Management.

As a faculty for Marketing course for

this batch, I facilitated the participants
in learning basic principles of
marketing. In the marketing course,
the participants analysed more than 20
different marketing case studies that has
helped in developing their marketing
acumen, analytical capabilities and has
exposed them to marketing issues in
a variety of industry contexts. Based

on my observation, I can vouch that
a number of participants will excel at
marketing roles in the companies. Given
their background which inculcates hard
work and discipline, the participants
have gained adequate knowledge, skills
and techniques across different areas
of marketing and management in a
quick time. They have also been able
to develop their conceptual, analytical
and execution skills in this domain. I
am convinced that they have necessary
abilities to deliver winning results as
middle and senior level managers.

of the module on Strategic Management.

AFP is a really good platform to orient the participants towards real
