A study on BIM 3D simulation process flow and

its benefit on architecture organization

By Suraya Binti Mohktaza Zain (BQB 160010)

Introduction
According to Bazjanac (2002), practicing professionals, faced with day to day project
deadlines, seldom have the time, resources or institutional support to learn modelling
in 3D; it will probably first take a new generation of consultants to show industry the
benefits of changing the work paradigm, and a new generation of educators to teach
future professionals how to do it before object-oriented modelling becomes
widespread.
Truly, architecture is more than only bricks, glass, and steel. It is quite sure that it
can express the meaning of the design to the society by immersive 3D simulation.
It can be used to support organizational design and change or to improve current
organizational processes and outcome.

Research Overview / Background

Malaysia was first introduced to the term of BIM or Building Information Modeling in
2009 during the second day Infrastructure and Construction Asias Building
Information Modeling and Sustainable Architecture Conference. Accordingly, the
private sector is progressively taking lead in the positive adoption of BIM. The BIM
platforms available in the market includes Revit, ArchiCAD, Bentley Aecosim and
Tekla. In tandem with Governments call, the industry has been urged to embrace the
technology in their deliverables. In many cases, they actively to structure the work,
improve the performance, and express the corporate identity through architecture
design.
Organization that has done a big simulation project will tell us that accurate
modeling is the most time consuming part. The technology of 3D simulation is armed
with pick list of software and event triggers to ease this burden. Truly, process flow
really cut down hours from typical simulation project.

Literature Review
Building Information Modeling (BIM) : Trends, Benefits, Risks, and
Challenges for the AEC industry. By Salman Azhar, Ph.D., A.M.Asce
In this paper, current trends, benefits, possible risk, and future challenges of BIM
for the AEC industry are discussed.
The findings of this study provide useful information for Architecture Industry
practitioners considering implementing BIM in their projects.

Literature Review Contd. : BIM in Design

BIM as a paradigm change has the potential to modernize the Architecture
Industry
Strength in the possibility to communicate easily and in a more
appropriate format the design intent and complex construction
information to project team (Eastman et. Al. , 2007)
Construction industry the only one that does not use the full benefits of 3D
simulation modelling prior to construction to reduce flaws as opposed to aircraft,
spacecraft and shipbuilding industry.

Problem / Gap / Hypothesis

To understand how the 3D simulation roles can be organized and implemented
in all the architecture industry.
To consider all the 3D software may be organized and implemented so that
common understanding of the architecture design concept permeates to all
networks members and facilitates the open and the multi-directional
communication between the network of architecture firms.
To proposed reasonable solution on the process between 2D design and 3D model
as the information transmission and additional work load is to create, modify
and present.

Research Aims
In general, is to obtain an understanding of how and to what level consultancies
utilize BIM software's in conducting their architectural documentation processes
To ascertain if the processes support effective BIM utilization to increase project
efficiency and ensure quality delivery of architectural built product.
To support the use of BIM (building information modeling) as a digital collaborative
platform in eliminating misinformation and redundancy of documentation within the
multi-disciplinary approach of project implementation and execution.

Research Objectives
To study the workflow of the processes from design to execution in BIM.
To expose the potential benefits brought on 3D simulation for architecture sector
either public nor private
To improve the processes and management development project trough
implementation on the 3D simulation software

Research Questions
RS Q1: Is there any work flow of BIM projects that has been developed before?
RS Q2: What is the impact of BIM to the projects development and quality of the
project in architecture organizations?

Research Design & Methodology

1.

Quantitative Method Design

- Questionnaire forms for architects and stakeholders
- Respondents > 100 peoples

Information on the background of the samples architects experiences of using 3D

simulation and the benefits of process flow in architecture organizations.

Scope Limitation
1) This study will only limit to the Malaysia architecture industry
2) The company that is implement BIM 3D simulation is mostly in Kuala Lumpur and
Selangor
3) The study on BIM 3D simulation that will be used in the experimentation must
have evidence on the process flow

Research Contribution & Further Study

Through 3D simulation, organization take full advantages of their entire projects to
make faster decisions as to quickly solve problems
Helps clients to understand, experiments, results, brainstorm new ideas, or update
variables as part of sensitivity analysis within the innovative immersive spaces.
Use of BIM offer cost savings for client and the project team

Conclusion
Based on this study of BIM 3D simulation process flow and its benefit on architecture
organization , several conclusions have been obtained;
Process of 3D simulation show that 3D simulation process in architecture has
advantages as time saving, simple and easily controllable but still it has a setbacks as
the technology is still in primitive stage
Immersive 3D simulation can improve in decision making in these interdisciplinary
design practice.
As the technology will advance, some of the setbacks maybe overcome. For example,
training is to be provided to learn the software's of BIM.
