Why Project Management Office (PMO)?


Projects have the role of building new capabilities or improving existing
one based on agreed upon plans
Many Organizations conduct their business as a series of Projects
The main reason projects do not realize completely their objectives is
the lack of consistent and integrated management of these projects
There is a need to have one integrated roadmap for projects under
implementation or in planning to help make decisions at various points
in the life time of projects and to make sure projects are in complete
alignment with strategic goals and to avoid redundancy and efficiency. 4

Types of PMO
There are 3 types of PMOs:
1)Supportive : It doesnt control or direct projects. Instead it supports
projects by offering training, mentoring, administration and reporting.
2)Controlling: offering controlling services ( such as project reviews,
audits and assessments) to different projects.
3)Directive: in this case, project managers are reporting directly to
PMO, which is directly responsible for the success of each project.

Which type of PMO is suitable?

Implementing a PMO from scratch


o Supportive PMO is best. Helps to add value by providing reporting,
training and monitoring services.

If you have an established PMO and you want to ensure that projects are
independently assessed
o Controlling PMO is best. You can directly influence the success of
projects, as well as implement best practices, standards and project
management tools.

In case of high risk projects


o Directive PMO is best. You can combine all of your organizational
resources into making a well-controlled set of targeted project activities
successful.
