The Celebration of Lights Christmas Park was

vandalized last weekend, much to the dismay of
organizers and volunteers.
Vandals broke into the display areas, leaving
slashed canvas tents and broken decorations in
their wake. The Christmas Park is located at the
ag grounds in Strathmore.
The volunteers and the ones who have
worked the hardest were just devastated, said
Rose Hamrlik, Christmas Park president. The
tents alone take hours and hours and hours to
put up.
Hamrlik, along with other volunteers, had
been working on the display all day on Saturday. Everything was OK when we left on Saturday evening, she said.
There were only minor things left to be done
before thieves vandalized the display in the early morning hours of Sunday.
Hamrliks husband, Dennis McNeill, called
her Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. after discovering that the Santa Claus and reindeer display
at the front entrance had been knocked over,
the sleigh turned upside down and Santas face
kicked in and broken.
I went and took pictures of that, Hamrlik
said. [Then] I went up to the chalet and as I
parked I could see that the (six foot) nutcrackers were down.
Hamrlik surmised the vandals must have been
at the agricultural grounds well after one oclock
in the morning. She said they threw trees over,
smashed one nutcracker, stomped on displays
and threw everything off the stage.
Then, they proceeded to cut up a line right
in half in the propane tank so the propane was
hissing, Hamrlik said.
In the big tent, the vandals cut big holes and
slashed it right down and kind of threw everything all over, she said.
Hamrlik called the police and the constable
confirmed there has been a lot of vandalism in
town over the last two weeks.
Theres been an increase over the last week
or so in vandalism around town, said Strathmore RCMP Cpl. Jay Salmon. Weve had multiple reports of cars being vandalized, Christmas
decorations and yards being vandalized, and
then obviously the Celebration of Lights event
that was kind of the peak of the vandalism.
I believe the estimates are around $6,000
worth of damage there, he added.

Dean Young, chairperson for the
Strathmore Wheatland Addictions Team
(SWAT) came before Strathmore town
council on Nov. 16 to give an overview
of SWATs accomplishments to date.
The team was also on hand to thank
town councillor Bob Sobol and give
him a service award for the leadership
he has provided over the years for the
team.
Our mandate is to increase awareness and education in any kind of addiction type issue in Strathmore and the
Wheatland county area, said Young.
Recently, over the last two years, we
decided to extend our mandate a little
bit into more the education than the
awareness side of things.
The SWAT team is in the midst of its
tenth anniversary, and over the years,
the team has developed and provided
three programs for Strathmore and
Wheatland County.
The first program was aimed at the
youth and the SWAT team worked with
Crowther Memorial Junior High School
(CMJHS) to help deliver its message to
students within health classes. The program featured discussing the personal
stories of three people who suffered
from addictions.
The three people touched me per-
sonally, my family and ultimately the

community, said Young.
Last year, the CMJHS Grade 9 health
group was able to go through this particular program.
The second program the SWAT team
provides targets practitioners and parents.
Young said it is important to look
at the root cause of an addiction and
this philosophy intertwines with this
group.
Upbringing is always a big issue,
parenting style is a big issue, family
dynamics is a big issue, said Young.
The team has a program called
raising youth, lowering risk, which
is based on 40 developmental assets.
These assets relate to the development
of risky behaviours including alcohol
and drug abuse. The program is designed to prevent substance abuse
through positive youth development.
Young said the 40 developmental assets have been a structure for youth
development for a number of years.
The program educates about a variety of subjects including drug abuse,
violence and teen pregnancy.
SWAT was able to offer the program
to a number of local practitioners.
Weve had some really good luck
with that (program), he said.
Young describes the third program
as really basic and a precursor to the
kids and drugs program, which is an

Alberta Health Services and RCMP proprietary program.
The anytime is the right time program is set as an introduction to talking to kids about substance abuse.
Its just a real informal setting where
we can bring parents into a room and
we can discuss how to broach that subject, said Young.
In the future the team would like to
present the three programs to anybody
who would like to participate.
Weve had some interest in other areas of the province that are very much
intrigued by the program that we have
put together, said Young. Weve been
invited now to go outside of our coalition area to present this particular program to show what we are doing here
in Strathmore and Wheatland County.
Young believes that a lot of local area
residents are not necessarily aware of
what SWAT does. So, over the last two
years, the team decided to develop an
Internet presence and try to help increase awareness. The team makes daily posts on social media.
Last month, Young created a small
survey that elicited results from 50 respondents in an effort to find out what
types of programming and issues local
area residents are looking for.
That was a nice eye-opening piece
of data for us, said Young.

Hamrlik said vandals targeted the
Christmas light display one other time,
during its second year of operation. At
that time, someone went over the fence
and broke the soldiers and threw them
in a park in the Strathmore neighbourhood of Hillview. Vandals broke their
arms, bugles and other parts off.
This is the ninth annual Celebration
of Lights Christmas Park.
Hamrlik said the opening of this
years Christmas Celebration of Lights
will happen as scheduled on Saturday,
Nov. 26.
Hamrlik contacted a lady to come
and look at the slashed canvas tent.
The goal was to have the tent repaired
for opening night so visitors to the park
could still enjoy the apples, hot chocolate and cookies provided under the
tent.
After the incident, Hamrlik received a call from
Strathmore Mayor
Michael Ell.
A lot of people have called and are

offering financial support and the community has just really, really come together to help out the park, said Hamrlik. I certainly see that.
Cpl. Salmon suggests calling the
Strathmore RCMP detachment if you
see or suspect anything suspicious.

the shot, the better it is for our whole community.
Even though e-cigarettes arent legal in Canada,
many people use them regularly. There is some

to oral disease. More work is being done to prove
this more definitely.
Prescribed sleeping medications are often
helpful in the short term but should not be
continued indefinitely, especially in seniors.
These medications are always on the Beers List of
high-risk medications in the elderly. Melatonin is
often suggested as an alternative to help insomnia.
Doses of 0.5-5mg are commonly used. It is
helpful for some but even this non-prescription
product isnt for everyone.
Pharmacists always encourage you to take your
medication as directed by your doctor. But its
human nature to forget sometimes. Missing a
dose or two generally will have little impact on
the problem treated. If you miss one or more
doses, take the next dose at the normal time and
in the normal amount. Dont double the dose.
Missing a dose of a birth control pill is a bit more
complicated. Call your pharmacist for answers.

Youth Clubs outreach program growing

The Strathmore Youth Clubs outreach program is
seeing successes.
According to Shannon Zieman, director for the
Youth Club of Strathmore, although the outreach program is fairly new, it has proven to be important and
effective.
The program has really grown and is doing some
really good stuff, she said at the recent Town of
Strathmore council meeting, where she was updating
councillors on the youth club happenings.
The youth club partners with Crowther Memorial
Junior High School and Strathmore High School to
bring programs to youth. The club has an outreach
worker that works with students on a daily basis to
try to ensure lasting connections outside of school.
The outreach is a growing need in our community
and maybe not one that everybody is recognizing,
said Zieman. We have just put in a grant to help with
the youth homelessness issue in town as well.
Zieman has put in a grant to help support the clubs
outreach worker as a stepping stone towards dealing
with youth homelessness.
The number of kids who are couch surfing is as-
tronomically high or higher than what it should be

and also we have kids sleeping in the parks, said Zieman. Kids are being pushed off from family member
to family member because going home is not an option, so it is definitely an area where we need to do a
little bit more work.
Strathmore town councillor Denise Peterson commented that when the Strathmore overnight shelter
conducted a needs assessment, the shelter saw a significant number of homeless youth in this community.
Even I was really surprised, said Peterson.
Another idea that is in the earliest stages: Looking
at the opportunity for the youth centre to possibly
house homeless youth at some point, said Zieman.
The youth club also runs a lunch program Tuesdays
and Thursdays. It has increased from 1,500 lunches to
1,921 lunches over the 2015-2016 school year.
Some of these lunches were vouchered, free lunches; however, some individuals purchased lunches. In
addition, the club offers a free snack program that
was made possible through a partnership with the
food bank.
The club also offers a fusion program and Zieman
said kids attending the program have the opportunity
to go to different places such as a movie or the Flying
Squirrel indoor trampoline fun park in Calgary.

According to Zieman, the fusion program has become more popular and there are upwards of 20 kids
coming to those events. One hundred and eighty
youth were served in these types of events over the
2015 year.
When we started back in 2009, we had 12 kids attending our club programs, said Zieman. We have
541 youth throughout the year (now).
Over the 2015-2016 school year, the club served
297 one-time kids from September to August.
That (number) does not reflect the outreach programs of the lunch and fusion, said Zieman, who
added the club is on track to increase memberships
this year.
Going forward, Zieman is looking towards new
programs for the Youth Club. For instance, the club
is looking at getting more information regarding a
weekend meal backpack program, which essentially
provides a hamper full of food within a backpack.
Students would be able to take the backpacks home
to support their family over the weekend.
Zieman said the support the youth club has received from the Town of Strathmore has been a huge
asset in helping to provide services for the youth.

Council approves new town fees

Strathmore town council approved several fee increases
within various departments at the town.
Utility rate fees will increase approximately five to nine per
cent, and are designed to bring Strathmore rates more in line
with City of Calgary fees, according to the town.
The Town of Strathmore purchases water from the City of
Calgary. Mel Tiede, director of corporate services for the Town

including this upcoming budget year.
Currently, the Town of Strathmores water deficit
sits at $830,000 and the towns storm sewer deficit
sits at $185,000. The operating budget deficit for
utilities is just under $1 million, which incorporates
the new fee implementation schedule.
The town purchases approximately 1.5 million
cubes of water from the city (Calgary) and we bill
for just over 1 million cubes of water so there is
certainly a water loss in our operation, said Tiede.
The average water bill for Strathmore citizens
will increase each month by 9.3 per cent.
Tiede explained that in 2016, a customer that
uses 15 cubes of water for water, sanitary, sewer,
storm and garbage, was charged a rate of $104.83.
The new rate will increase that fee to $114.64,
which is in line with the current city of Calgary
rate of $114.38.
FAMILY CENTRE
The community services department recommended a 25 per cent increase on all advertising
rates and a 10-30 per cent increase on all storage
rental rates.
We want to make sure that our rates are competitive and were bringing in as much profit as
possible from our advertising, said Tracy Simpson,
community services coordinator with the Town of
Strathmore.
According to Simpson, approximately two years
ago her department started to do some really aggressive rate increases for advertising. She explained this was because the rates had never been
looked at for a number of years and the facility was
seeing a large demand for advertising.
Currently, advertising spots on the gold side of
the arena are all sold and the majority of the wall
advertising is sold as well.
Last year, the community and services department invested in a certain type of Plexiglas in the
arena that enabled advertising to be installed more
easily with less physical installation constraints.
That really increased our sales, said Simpson.
Weve also been more aggressive with having other advertising opportunities in the facility, which
includes selling the press box.
Simpson said the department conducted a comparative study two years ago for storage rates in the
facility and the department is trying to bring those
rental rates up to industry standards.
There will be no changes to ice rates, since there
has been a 10 per cent per year increase on ice
rates over the last three years.
Current ice rates for the most part are comparable and competitive, she said
CIVIC CENTRE
Community services recommended a 10 per cent
increase on commercial hall and kitchen rentals as
well as a 10 per cent increase on all equipment and
supply of rentals. However, these increases will
not affect any non-profit rental rates in the facility,
which will remain the same.
Simpson said the department conducted some
fee studies and found that rates were low for the
facilities commercial rentals.
As such, the department implemented a 10 per
cent annual increase on rental rates for non-profits

over the last three years and a 20 per cent annual
increase on all commercial rates over the last three
years.
One of the challenges of filling the facility as
a convention centre during the day is the lack of
kitchen access, said Simpson. Not many conventions or business style events are going to want to
rent the facility without some sort of food service.
Simpson said community services is currently
looking at some options to work around this issue.
PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
A number of planning and development fees increased. Some of the fee increases pertained to fees
charged for bylaw amendments, certificates or letters of compliance regarding real property reports,
development permits, documents, encroachment
agreements and environmental requests.
A new fee was introduced in regards to road closures.
These fees have not been updated for a number
of years and some of them are still out of alignment
with what most other places are doing but getting
a little closer, said Werner Fischer, director of planning and development.
According to the planning and development department, planning and development fees in Strathmore were low compared to what other municipalities of a similar size charge their residents. Further,
the department stated that the new fee increases
are based upon the amount of staff time and attention required.
AQUATIC CENTRE
The community services department is recommending a minimum of one year without any fee
increases for aquatic centre users.
Throughout the 2016 season, weve received
significant feedback from the community about the
cost of recreation and the challenges theyre facing
with the downturn in the economy, said Simpson.
Previously, the facility implemented a 10 per cent
annual fee increase over the last three years and
this was based on a fee survey that the department
conducted three years ago. At the time, the survey revealed that fees were lower than average for
comparable facilities.
CEMETERY
Legislative services proposed a fee increase to
full-sized and cremation-sized plots.
This will keep our cemetery costs comparable
to that of surrounding communities, said Jennifer
Sawatzky, municipal clerk for the Town of Strathmore.
Other costs were included in the fee schedule
including an added cost for the tree dedication program.
RCMP
Legislative services brought forward a new fee
schedule for RCMP fees. This includes fees for such
things as criminal record checks, fingerprinting
and insurance letters.
The fee is $15 for any of these services.
These are the fees that were recommended by
the staff sergeant, said Sawatzky.
Successful market at Aspen Crossing

Aspen Crossing was busy Nov. 21 and 22 with their annual Christmas
Market. People were waiting before the doors even opened on Nov.
21 for the much anticipated event. Many also partook of reservations for lunch and tea in the train car restaurant after a busy day of
Christmas shopping.
Province improves access to childcare

In a move to increase access to quality, affordable

childcare, the province of Alberta has announced the
development of 18 new early learning and child care
centres across the province.
The move is the first step the province is officially
taking with regards to lowering the fee charged by
early learning and child care centres to a maximum
of $25-per-day child care in Alberta.
We know the cost of quality child care is a challenge for many families. As a government, it is up to
us to support parents and make sure children have
opportunities for bright futures, said Irfan Sabir,
Minister of Human Services, in a news release. I am
proud that our government is creating new childcare spaces across the province.
The new announcement comes on the heels of the
governments recent election platform, which included extending access to childcare with the $25-perday model as the provinces finances permit.
The government states that this new $10 million
investment will create approximately 1,000 new

child-care spaces and up to 230 new jobs.
Aaron Manton, press secretary for the Minister of
Human Services, said that in the 2015-2016 fiscal
year, the province recorded the average childcare fee
at approximately $848 per month. However, Manton
warned that this fee varies greatly across the province.
We hear anecdotally from parents who pay a lot
more than that too, said Manton. Its so important
to invest in affordable childcare.
The locations of the new child care centres across
the province will be determined based upon where
demand is greatest. Manton said that higher costs are
associated with places where there is great demand.
There will be at least one centre in each of the seven human services delivery regions. These regions
are separated into NE, NW, North Central, Edmonton, Calgary, Central and South within Alberta.
Manton said the province will decide on the centres using a mix of geo-spacial data along with information obtained on early development indicators
throughout the province. The province will be tar-
geting the new centres to where they can make the most difference.
The new child care centres are designed to help fill in the
gaps in the current childcare system.
For example, the new centres will address gaps in flexible
child-care arrangements for parents doing shift work, and it will
also provide more accessible locations for childcare, such as
hospitals or other public buildings.
In addition, the new investment will help support children
with diverse needs.
Each new child care centre will receive up to $500,000 in operating funding in the first year with the opportunity to receive
two more years of funding. The ultimate amount of funding
received will be based on each application.
I expect that well get a lot of organizations applying for the
full amount, said Manton.
The deadline for applications closes Jan. 20, 2017, and the
locations of the 18 new child care centres will be announced
sometime before April 2017.
On the backlash to hysterical political correctness

American-English revolutionary, Thomas Paine
wrote that, He who dares not offend, cannot be honest.
The cardinal rule of public and increasingly private discourse is to never offend anyone. In the stifling political correctness of our age, it is becoming
increasingly difficult for Albertans to speak honestly
about their political leaders, and for political leaders
to speak honestly to their constituents for fear of offending. This obsession with never offending is but
one of the many reasons trust in many politicians remains low.
Hyper political correctness is the ugly, opposite
side of the coin of politeness. We expect people in
proper society to be courteous, polite and reasonable.
We have rightfully pushed some offensive words and
phrases out of our popular vocabulary as an acknowledgement that everyone should be treated with respect and decency. But somewhere in the process of
making our language more decent and respectful, we
fell into a dangerous trap of ruling entire subjects out
of bounds for discussion.
The left in Canada, the United States and other advanced democracies have learned that they can end
and effectively win arguments by screaming intolerance! at every subject or statement with which they
disagree. Surely, there have been cases of intolerance
that rightfully should be denounced, but in so many
cases they have claimed that men and women of good
will are intolerant when that is simply not that case.
They have cried wolf! so many times in the past that
when real cases of intolerance arise, many no longer
believe them.
The victory of President-elect Donald Trump provides some very valuable lessons. After liberals denounced moderate Republicans like John McCain and
Mitt Romney (or in Canada, Stephen Harper) as intolerant radicals, many Americans simply concluded
that the same people denouncing Donald Trump just
couldnt be trusted anymore.
Donald Trump was a very flawed candidate with
many statements on and off the record that were
intolerant. But most of the voices screaming were the
same voices that denounced good and tolerant people just four years before. They cried wolf! one too
many times.
If theres one lesson that we should learn from his
election, it is that smug, condescending, political correctness will spark a backlash. People were tired of
being told what they could and could not say, so they
turned to the man who would say anything, however
outlandish.
Donald Trump is not a good example of what those
of us who are sick of political correctness should aspire to; but he is a good example of what may happen
if we dont learn to lighten up and let people speak
their minds.
I noted some of these points the weekend after
Trumps win, and the online left-wing were apoplectic. They shrieked that political correctness was the
only thing standing between decent society and barbaric intolerance, and that my mere questioning of
this was condoning violence and harassment.
They descended into fits of righteous indignation at
the thought that free speech is more important than
protecting people from opposing points of view. In
a twist of irony, they descended into hyperbole, personal insults (He grew a 19th century beard to conceal a tiny man chin) and even threats of violence (I
challenge you to a fist fight). The internet is full of
angry people hiding behind a keyboard, so thats par
for the course.
The dangers of hysterical political correctness are
not limited to the arena of elected politicians. Our
campuses have become safe spaces where students
are shielded from trigger words that might offend
them.
Recently at the University of Calgary, a student
wearing a Make America Great Again hat was physically assaulted for his fashion choices. A similar incident was reported at Mount Royal University. Academia was once the citadel of free speech, dissent and
critical thinking, but it is now largely become a place
where students can pass through an undergraduate
and graduate degree without encountering very much
to challenge their worldview.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and and
Freedoms lists
our freedoms of conscience and religion, thought,
belief, opinion and expression as the first and most
fundamental rights. Nowhere in our constitution is a
right to not be offended.
Somewhere along the road weve traveled together as a country, we have forgotten that we have disagreed, debated and argued with one another since
the day this country was founded, and we are stronger for it.
He who dares not offend, cannot be honest.

Calf Robe commemorated

Siksika Nation recognized
educational achievements,
family, tradition, and honoured one of their sons during the Siksika Nation Board
of Education powwow Nov.
19 at the Arbour teepee.
Chris Calf Robe, 31, was
born and raised in Siksika
Nation, and was presented
with a plaque honouring his
participation in the Siksika
culture.
Following the ceremony,
he mentioned how proud he
was to be honoured at the
powwow with the support
of his family.
Calf Robe is the younger
of two brothers and grew up
with Down Syndrome. While
the disorder might have
handicapped him, it hasnt
taken away from his pride
for his native culture.
Ive been taking him to
these ceremonies ever since
he was a baby, said his
mother Sharon Calf Robe.
Ever since he could walk,
he has been dancing and Indian drumming.
Chris was presented the
plaque accompanied by his
mother, two brothers Steven
and Ben, and more than 30
family members.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being
here for my son, Sharon
spoke to the crowd. I am
very proud of my son. Even
though he is disabled, he has
a very strong knowledge and
passion for our culture.
Robin Big Snake is 59 years
old and is Chriss adopted
brother. He and his fianc
Gloria Haberlack dreamt
about this day last August
when they approached Sharon with the idea of honouring Chris and shedding some
light on native people with
disabilities.
There are people all over
with disabilities who dont
get recognized, and in my
opinion, they havent received the proper attention,
said Big Snake. We need to
make them feel like part of
the community. We need to
give them encouragement,
make them feel important
and give them strength in
the community.
Chris, a big Calgary Flames
fan, was dressed in an outfit
with beads and feathers, an
outfit that Sharon made by
hand. She has been making
her kids outfits by hand all
their life.
After he was presented
with the plaque, Chris and
his family took part in the
honour dance around the inside of the Arbour.
That was followed up by
a grass dance competition
in honour of Chris. After the
winner was named, Chris
and his mother Sharon went
around the circle of elders,
giving away blankets and
cloths. It was a way of thanking their community for supporting him during his powwow.

Remembering our Roots book

a treasured Christmas gift

John Godsman of Strathmore will be
selling his popular book, Remembering
Our Roots - Volume Two - for the upcoming Christmas season.
The book is a compilation of Remembering our Roots columns published every two weeks in the Strathmore Times
between 2013 and 2014. As the name
suggests, the articles and the book are
a look at the personal history of many
residents of the Strathmore area.
Godsman said that every two years
his articles get transcribed into book
form and get sold to the general public.
In fact, two of his books can be found
in the bookstore of the Glenbow Museum.
With Volume 2, Godsman ordered
200 books right off the bat, and he still
has over 40 books left that havent been
sold. He attributes this to the downturn
in the economy.
The books have been highly treasured by Strathmore area residents and
are a great keepsake gift for the holidays. Godsman and his wife are featured in one of the articles in Volume 2.
Godsman has written over 150 articles since starting in May 2010, and he
is in his seventh year of writing.
Ive thoroughly enjoyed doing the
articles, he said.
Godsman was born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, a fishing port on the
North Sea. He moved to Strathmore in
2000, after working for Parks Canada
and the U.S. Forest Service for many
years. He joined Enterprise Rent-A-Car
by 2010 and was working as a shuttle
driver in Calgary.
Godsman reflected on the year he
started writing articles, explaining, I
was just looking for something to do
and I was interested in people that I
get to meet around town, and this was
a way to meet more people and learn
more about the area.
Completing interviews on people
from an agricultural background has
been a wonderful experience, said
Godsman. Ive learned all kinds of
things about farming, seen calves born
and made many, many friends.

By December 2012, he wrote approximately 55 articles and gave his
transcripts to the Assist Business Centre, where the articles we transferred
into book form and then Volume 1 was
published by BlitzPrint Publishing of
Calgary.

One was officially published in 2013
and contains a compilation of articles
from 2010 through to 2012.
Godsman easily sold over 300 copies
of Volume 1 and kept on re-ordering
due to high demand at the time. The
volume sold like hotcakes.
In 2011, Strathmore town councillor Bob Sobol asked Godsman to write
two articles for the town to appear in a
published centennial magazine. Godsman wrote one article about the Joyland Theatre, and another featuring Joe
and Rosa Griffith from the Wheatland
Square Dance Club.

The Wheatland Kings swept a pair of weekend games, including a

thrilling 4-3 win over the Airdrie Thunder on Nov. 20 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Monumental weekend for Kings

Following last weekends narrow
3-2 loss to the Stettler Lightning,
Strathmore Wheatland Kings head
coach Shadoe Stoodley said it would
be nice to win a game for their goaltender (Brady Hoover) for a change.
Hoover has been the backbone
for the Kings despite getting outshot
nearly every game. He was solid in
net during the Kings best weekend
of the season when they knocked off
the number one and two seeds from
the northern division of the Heritage
Junior Hockey League.
The Kings (7-9-3) cooked the
Mountainview Colts 6-3 Nov. 19 at
the Didsbury Recreation Complex,
and defeated the Airdrie Techmation
Thunder 4-3 Nov. 20 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
He has been there for us every
game, win or lose. In my opinion,
hes one of the best goalies in the
league, said winger Jaks Faris.
Hoover didnt have to be flashy. The
majority of shots came from distance;
he calmly snatched them up or used
his lower body to redirect the puck
into the corner for clearance.
The Kings sit 4-5 against teams below .500 and entered the weekend
1-6 against teams over .500. These
were undoubtedly two of the biggest
wins for the Kings this season.
Now they know they can compete
against the top teams. Theres nothing
stopping them now, said Stoodley.
The Kings were launching from all
angles, trying to get a rebound by any

means necessary.
Shadoe came in during the first intermission and told us we needed to
shoot and crash the net more, said
Faris.
All four King goals were courtesy
of juicy rebound opportunities, including the winner from Faris.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead into the third,
Zachary Meadows came streaking
down the left wing with Faris as a
trailer. Firing low and hard, the puck
popped out to Faris, who made no
mistake.
Jaks has been working hard all
year and now hes getting rewarded
for it, said Stoodley. If he keeps
working hard, they will keep going
in for him.
Faris has compiled seven goals and
11 points in 19 games in his second
season with the Kings. Last year as a
rookie, he was held pointless in 14
games.
Hes come a long ways from last
year, said Kings captain Keenan
Ogle. Hes working well with (Matt)
Thomson out there. They are getting
the puck moving and really making
things happen.
The Kings outshot the opposition
45-31, only the fifth time they have
accomplished the feat through 19
games.
Thomson was in on a 2-on-1 with
Meadows in the first period on a
similar play to Fariss winner. Thomson elected to keep and shoot, with
Meadows in front of the net to stuff
in the rebound.

Hoover was maxed out, starting both games; recording 28 saves
against the division-leading Thunder (14-4-2) and 40 saves against the
Colts (13-3-2).

Stoodley. If we keep putting pucks
in the other net, we know he will
keep doing his thing and then thats
how we get rolling.
Saddled with only four defensemen and 10 forwards, the Kings still
picked up the convincing win over
the Colts on the road.
The fifth-year vet Hoover lowered
his goals against average to 3.94 and
picked up his seventh win in net.
The Okotoks Bisons (11-8-0) will
host the Kings at Murray Arena, Nov.
25. The Bisons are the other team
above .500 that the Kings defeated
when they clubbed them 6-4 during
the home opener Sept. 18 in Strathmore.
The Kings wrap up November
when the High River Flyers (6-13-0)
enter the Strathmore Family Centre

Both boys and girls senior volleyball seasons with the Strathmore High
School Spartans ended over the weekend as they both lost in the South Central Zone tournament.
Playing at Brooks High School, the Sr.
boys lost in the final to the Springbank
Phoenix 2-0 (21-25, 21-25).
It was disappointing to not achieve
our goal of winning zones again this
year, said head coach Cole Hintz. We
played well and it wasnt as much a matter of us losing as Springbank played at
the level they needed to win.
We played confident and composed,
but Springbank found a level we havent
seen from them all year. We were playing our best volleyball when it mattered
but the result didnt go our way.
Rolling through the six round robin
games undefeated, the Spartans pasted
the W.H Croxford High School Cavaliers
2-0 (25-20, 25-20) in the semifinal.
The Sr. girls didnt fare much better
in Airdrie.
The Spartans were slated third coming
out of the round robin with wins over
the Highwood High School Mustangs
2-0 and the Olds High School Spartans
2-1. They dropped round robin matches
to the host Bert Church High School
Chargers 2-1 and to the Cochrane High
School Cobras 2-1.
The girls played some of their most
consistent volleyball of the season, almost upsetting two ranked teams in the
tournament, said head coach Randy
Moncks.
The Spartans crossed over to play the
Brooks High School Buffalos and lost in
straight sets.
We struggled with our passing and
had trouble running a consistent offence, eventually losing both sets, said
Moncks.
The junior boys wrapped up their season in their South Central Zone tourney
at W.H. Croxford.
Finishing fifth, the Spartans downed
Chestermere High School Lakers 2-0
and clipped the Cochrane Cobras 2-1,
but lost to the Holy Trinity Academy
Knights 2-1 and lost their crossover
match to the Springbank Phoenix 2-1.

The Badger awards were handed out to players who exemplify what it means to be a Badger: players with leadership, proficiency, having
a positive attitude and dedication.

Palardy, Austin Smith, Anthony Timmons and

The Strathmore Community Football Association Badgers came up a little short seeking their
first provincial title since 2010, but they took the
time Nov. 18 to honour a very successful season.
The senior, bantam and peewee teams were all
in attendance at the Strathmore Civic Centre as
the top players from each program were recognized with awards.
The peewee Badgers finished 6-0 and captured
the Central Peewee Football League (CPWFL) title. The senior Badgers ran through the Mountain
View Football Conference (MVFC) 5-0-1 and lost
in the league championship game to the Innisfail
Cyclones. The bantam Badgers went 3-1 and lost
in the Central Football League (CFL) consolation
final.
The Jensen brothers pulled in a pair of MVP
awards for their respective teams: quarterback
Reid Jensen was named MVP for the senior team
and Dawson Jensen was named MVP for the peewee program. Brandon Middlemiss was elected
MVP for the bantams.
League all-stars were unveiled with plenty of
Badgers finding their way onto the list.
Reilly Baham, Alex Nwoye, Josh Middlemiss,
Zachary Hiscocks and Jensen were all-stars for
the MVFC. Badgers making their way onto the
CFL all-star list: Luke Henry, linebacker Riley
Southern, Max Sims, Malikia Henry and running
back Angelina Palardy. The peewees defence stifled teams all year and they were rewarded with
the most all-star selections, including quarterback Brady Johansen, Jack Warrack, Riley Wiebe,

The CFR Chemicals Bisons finished their last long road trip
of the regular season with a pair of convincing wins.
The Bisons (14-0-2) left early Friday morning for their tilt
against the Grande Peace Ernies Sports Storm (5-9-2) in nondivisional Alberta Midget Hockey League action Nov. 19.
Its definitely nice to get our big northern road trips out
of the way, said Bisons head coach Sandy Henry. It will be
nice to have home games and a couple short trips left until
playoffs
The Bisons got their moneys worth for the seven and a
half hour bus ride, as they ditched the Storm 6-3 at Chris
McMillian Arena.
The Storm were fresh in the Bisons minds; the two teams
tangoed Nov. 11 at the Strathmore Family Centre, as the Bisons defeated them soundly 5-1.
We knew what they were capable of and we knew that we
had just beaten them, so we thought we had an advantage
over them going in, said Bisons forward Blake Wells, who
recorded a goal and two assists.
Landon Melzers second goal of the year at the 3:32 mark
of the second period proved to be the winner.
It was a fairly similar game to the first time we played
them. We came ready to play, weathered the storm in the first
period and once we got it going, we took the lead in the first
and we were fine, said Henry.
The Bisons led 3-1 after the first frame on goals from Tyler
Petrie, Tyson Scott and Wells.
The line of Scott, Petrie and Kaden Hanas has been clicking all season. Petrie is tied for second on the team with nine
goals.
A pair of forwards were away from the team, which jumbled up the lines a little: Hanas was away with resting an
injury and Payton Krebs was called up to play with the Kootenay Ice (4-13-5-1) of the Western Hockey League. Affiliated
player Mark Zachary took Hanas spot and fit in nicely.
Zachary, 15, stands 6-foot-3 and currently plays for the
AC Avalanche midget AAA, where he has five goals and 14
points in 11 games.
I thought he played well. He is a big guy, strong on the
puck, good skater and very coordinated for his size, said
Petrie.
Krebs is eligible for two more games with the Ice until
the Bisons season ends. The Ice have been in talks with the
Bisons about tentatively calling Krebs back up when the Ice
travel to Washington to take on the Spokane Chiefs (8-8-4-1)
and the Tri-City Americans (14-8-2-0) Jan. 20 and 21. Krebs
older brother Dakota is a defenseman for the Americans.

player Kale Clouston filled in on the

The Moose Jaw Warriors (13-4-4-0)
drafted Clouston in the fifth round,
94th overall during the 2015 WHL Bantam draft. Currently, Clouston plays for
the Wheatland Chiefs double-A midget
team (11-1-1), where he has five goals
and 11 points in 11 games.

and Huber contributed one of his own
as the Bisons outshot the Storm 33-25.
Ben Laidlaw turned away 22 shots in

The Bisons wrapped up their road
trip with a 2-1 victory over the MLAC
Beverly Optimists (5-9-1) Nov. 20 at Bill
Hunter Arena in Edmonton.
The Optimists led 1-0 after one, but
a pair of goals from Brandon Machado
and Boaz Bassen sealed the deal. The
Bisons outshot the Optimists 35-28.
Affiliated player Riley Stovka made
his debut for the Bisons. Laidlaw had
an equipment issue in the first period
and was forced to exit the game. Stovka came in for three minutes and made
one save. Stovka is teammates with
Clouston on the Chiefs where he is 4-1
with a .890 save percentage and an impressive 2.54 goals against average.
Laidlaw relieved Stovka later in the
first and piled up 27 saves. The Bisons
other netminder, Hunter Young, is still
day-to-day, nursing a concussion. Laidlaw now leads the league with nine
wins in 10 starts.
The Sherwood Park J. Ennis Kings
(13-1-2) fell 4-1 to the CAC Gregg Distributors (5-9-2) Nov. 19 at Bill Hunter
Arena, which means the Bisons are the
only team undefeated.
We check out what happens in the
league every night, not because we are
scoreboard watching, but we just have
interest in the league, said Henry. We
did our job, we cant worry so much
about what the other teams are doing.
The Bisons return to the Strathmore
Family Centre this weekend as they
host the Optimists on Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.
and the Distributors Nov. 26 at 5:15
p.m.

Peewee Braves come up short

The Wheatland Braves had no problem putting the puck in the net, but
several defensive breakdowns cost
them against the Red Deer Motors, as
they fell 8-6 in a barnburner Nov. 20 at
the Strathmore Family Centre.
The local double-A peewee team
(2-12-2) opened with the ice still wet
1:02 into the first, when Jack Slemp
sent home his third goal of the campaign from Nolan Mahussier and Adam
Moore.
They jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the
third place Motors (7-2-3) when Cyle
Clayton added a tally in the first from
Garrin Gosling and Grady Stovka.
Mahussier finished with a seasonhigh four points, as he supplied a pair
of goals in the second period from Tate
Yule, Ryder Many Grey Horses and
Slemp. He capped off the hat trick in
the third on a sweet feed from Many
Grey Horses.
Nolan and Ryder have benefitted
from Slemps efforts, said Braves head
coach Keith Klemmesen. Slemp works
hard and he is the straw that stirs the
drink for that line.
Unfortunately, the Motors piled on
three straight goals, including a shorthanded marker from Nolan Larson to
close out the second, taking a 4-3 lead
into the break.
We just quit working. We are successful when we attack the offensive
blue line with speed, said Klemmesen.
The fifth goal against us was a direct
reflection of that. Our winger carried
the puck to the blue line with no speed,
turned the puck over and couldnt get
back on defence.
Yule added his second point on the
night when he drove home his third
on the power play from Many Grey
Horses.
Mahussier and Many Grey Horses
combined for seven points.
Those two are working well together, said Klemmesen. They have a lot of
talent and hockey ability, but its about
more than just production. We need to
be strong in our own end and strong
entering the offensive zone as well.
The Motors pulled away with four
straight goals to close the third.
We have backed off the effort we
had up in Sylvan Lake a few weeks
ago, said Klemmesen. Anybody here
can tell you that you need a 60-minute
effort or these games get tough.
The Braves tied the Lethbridge Hurricanes White 3-3 Nov. 18 at the Henderson Ice Centre. Trailing 2-0 after the
first frame, Gosling got the Braves going with his third snipe of the season
with 2:27 remaining.
The Braves closed out the third with
goals from Cole Tweit and Tyler Fairbairn. Slemp assisted on both markers.
Matthew Dovichak recorded 24 saves
in net, moving to 1-6-1 on the season.
The Hurricanes move to 7-5-2.
CHIEFS AWAIT MAKE-UP GAME
The midget Chiefs (11-1-1) were
scheduled to faceoff with the Foothills
Bisons (1-13-2) Nov. 20 at the Strathmore Family Centre, but a scheduling
conflict booted them off the ice. The
two teams are still in talks for a makeup date.
On tap for the Chiefs are the lowly
Cranbrook Dynamiters (0-15-0) at Hus-

Stevens comes up short in Vegas

Destiny Stevens returned from Las Vegas last week without
any new shiny belt buckles from the Indian National Finals
Rodeo (INFR) that took place Nov. 8-12.
It was her second-straight berth in the INFR where she
competed in the breakaway roping and barrel racing, following a dominating season in the Indian Rodeo Cowboys
Association and the Northern Alberta Native Cowboys Association.
I didnt have the results I wanted in the arena this year,
said Stevens. I hit a barrel and missed the roping in the
breakaway, which took me out of the short go Saturday.
The competition took place at the South Point Equestrian
Center, where Stevens finished with a time of 21:029 and
20.948 seconds, which added up to 41.977 seconds, good
enough for 29th in the barrels.
Stevens logged a no time in the breakaway, which was
tough considering it was her favourite of the two events.
I left Vegas proud of myself for making the finals and
learning a lot about competition under pressure, said Stevens. I have now completed my junior career in rodeo and
move on to the ladies events next year. I have competed
against the best from across North America and have made
some amazing friends along the way.
She didnt leave Vegas completely empty handed: she managed to haul in $250 for winning a breakaway jackpot competition at Horsemans Park in Las Vegas just prior to the
INFR.
Stevens made the two-and-a-half day, 20-hour trek accompanied by her parents, brother Hayze and horses Tom Tom
and Becca.
She would like to thank everyone for supporting and following her rodeo career.
This winter, she will be competing in the Wheatland Cowboys and Cowgirls Rodeo Association out of the Lausen Indoor Arena, with the finals running in March.
She will also be competing in jackpot roping events until
the snow melts, when she returns to the rodeo trail with the
goal of heading back to Vegas a year from now in the ladies
breakaway.

Ruth Emma Elizabeth Huether was

born May 30, 1934, in Liebenow, Kreis
Arnswalde, Pommern (now Lubieniow
Poland) and spent her early years in
Rosenfeld Germany. Surviving war
and a transatlantic crossing Ruth made Alberta, Canada her new home. She met Richard Gordon Huether
one bright Sabbath Day during a church service in a
small country church in Levelland. They fell in love
and were married 5 months later on November 06,
1952 and enjoyed 64 years of love. Together they
made their home on a dairy farm, and considering
their time in history, they prided themselves in raising
a uniquely composed family consisting of a fostered
nephew ( Wesley Lengwenus-Huether), an adopted
son (Jeffery Huether), and a biological daughter (Tamara Huether (Kostrosky). Ruth raised her children
actively involved in farm life, church family, and
school initiatives. She spent many hours volunteering and giving of her time to others. She taught her
children the importance of sacrifice, forgiveness, and
acceptance. She taught her nieces and nephews the
importance of hospitality, work ethic, the strength in
being firm but fair and that Birthday Wishes, are always best when sung. She taught her grandchildren
the value found in belief, music, language, and patience. She taught her great-grandchildren that love
is found in a persons eyes, snuggles, words and soul,
even when the mind is confused. She left a lasting
legacy with her community of the importance of investment and time given to others. Ruth fell asleep
in her Savior Jesus on Friday, November 18, 2016.
Her Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday May
21, 2017, for all family and friends, at the Beiseker
Levelland Seventh Day Adventist Church. In lieu of
flowers Ruth would have preferred her friends to give

DeSMIT, Doreen
Doreen passed away suddenly on
November 11, 2016 at the age of
80 years. She was born in Pincher
Creek on March 6, 1936. She was
a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandma,
sister, and aunt. She is survived by Bill, her loving
husband of 53 years; four children, Sherry of Calgary,
Billy of Ontario, Susan (Tony) Fulmek of Strathmore
and Cindy (Stu) Carter of Sundre; eight grandsons;
one granddaughter; five great grandsons; one great
granddaughter; and two sisters Margaret and Shirley.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents Fred and
Alice Scott and sisters Jean, Betty, Dorothy and her
brother Jim. Doreen was a member of the Strathmore Alliance Church. A celebration of life was held
on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Wheatland Funeral Chapel, Strathmore at 2:00 p.m. The family
would like to thank all the medical staff in Strathmore, (Dr. Sader) at the Peter Lougheed Centre and
Foothills Hospital for all the care given to Mom. To

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing
of Linda Beaton on Sunday, November 20. Linda was
a kind and compassionate woman. She was a great
mom, always looking out for the best interests of her
family. Her favorite color was blue and loved when
people dressed in bright colors. Linda is survived by
her husband, Barry; children Duane (Camilla) and
Jennifer (Ernie); and grandchildren Makenzie, Jordan,
Connor, and Hunter. She was predeceased by her son,

Jane Calkins of Strathmore, Alberta
passed away peacefully at the Strathmore Hospital on Monday, November
7, 2016. Jane was born in England and immigrated
to Canada in 1946 with her war bride mother and
younger sister Sarah. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her brother Paul Wilson (Mary
Jo) of Cranbrook, B.C., sister Sarah Stevens of Penticton, B.C., daughter Brenda Jure and son Dennis
Richmond of Williams Lake, B.C., her adopted son
Bill Southern of Strathmore, who cared for her as well
as friends and caregivers John McGinnis and Joyce
Friend. She will also be missed by her friends at the
Mountain View Hutterite Colony. Jane was raised in
the south Okanagan of B.C. and will be remembered
by her friends in that area. Jane was predeceased
by her husband Ernie Calkins and soulmate Erwin
Dobler, parents Fay and Phoebe Wilson and brother
in Law George Stevens. She also leaves to mourn
grandchildren and great grandchildren in Canada and
numerous relatives in England. Jane was a lifelong
