ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND

MAINTENANCE TECHNOLOGY

PROGRAM MISSION
The Electrical Installation & Maintenance Technology program's mission is to serve the
community as a learning-centered, open door program that provides technical training to
meet the demands of the electrical industry and the needs of the individual. An open-exit
option allows the students to identify their career objectives and participate in program
exploration.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The curriculum is designed to prepare students with entry level knowledge and manipulative
skills for employment in the electrical industry. The program combines theory with laboratory
activities as an effective means of developing the skills essential to the electrical trade.
The student begins with the fundamentals of electricity and wiring of simple circuits, then
progresses to residential interior wiring, three phase alternating current power, and wiring of
more complex circuits and equipment. Safety is stressed as an integral part of each shop
task. Emphasis is placed on wiring in accordance with the provisions contained in the
National Electrical Code.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS

An electrician works on commercial, residential, agricultural and industrial

projects. There is a direct relationship between the nature and quality of the
product required and the payment made by the customer. Therefore the
electrician has a continuing responsibility to work professionally in order to meet
the requirements of the customer and thus maintain and grow the business.
Electrical installation is closely associated with other parts of the construction
industry, and with the many products that support it, normally for commercial
purposes.
The electrician works internally, including the homes of customers and on small
and major projects. He or she will plan and design, select and install,
commission, test, report, maintain, fault find and repair systems to a high
standard. Work organization and self-management, communication and
interpersonal skills, problem solving, flexibility and a deep body of knowledge
are the universal attributes of the outstanding electrician.
Whether the electrician is working alone or in a team the individual takes on a
high level of personal responsibility and autonomy. From working to provide a
safe and reliable electrical installation and maintenance service, in accordance
with relevant standards, through to diagnosing malfunctions, programming and
commissioning home and building automation systems, concentration,
precision, accuracy and attention to detail every step in the process matters and
mistakes are largely irreversible, costly and potentially life threatening.
With the international mobility of people the electrician faces rapidly expanding
opportunities and challenges. For the talented electrician there are many
commercial and international opportunities; however these carry with them the
need to understand and work with diverse cultures and trends. The diversity of
skills associated with electrical installations is therefore likely to expand.

Standards Specification
The WorldSkills Standards Specification specifies the knowledge, understanding
and specific skills that underpin international best practice in technical and
vocational performance. It should reflect a shared global understanding of what
the associated work role(s) or occupation(s) represent for industry and business.

companies and believes we will receive referral business from them over time. The
company estimates that 80% of revenues will come from old Gardner and Miller
clientele and 20% from new referrals and business. Though the former Gardner
and Miller clientele will be important during the first year of business, Robin

Service Business Analysis

The market for commercial electrical contracting services is very fragmented and
crowded. Among these, only a few are large firms with 20 or more electricians on
staff. The remainder are small firms with less than three full-time electricians. Premiere
Electric's current niche is its strong relationship with former customers of Gardner and
Miller. But this will not be sufficient for growth in a competitive market.
By focusing on data, communication and electrical installation and maintenance, Robin
reduces her direct competitors to two large electrical firms that bid on the area's largest
projects. Though, one day, Premiere Electric plans to be a force in the area's largest
projects, an opportunity exists now for new customers whose smaller projects are not
being pursued aggressively by Robin's competitors.

Strategy and Implementation Summary

Premiere Electric's strategy is simple and ambitious. First, capture most of Gardner and
Miller's old customers as a base is which to build the firm. From this secure footing,
Robin will begin to market her specialization skills to new customers. Premiere Electric
is also certified as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE) with numerous authorities,
agencies, and firms. Robin believes that she will be successful marketing her services to
the many business women in the area. Currently, Premiere Electric is the only womenowned electrical contracting firm is the tri-county area.

6.1 Competitive Edge

When Robin opted to start her own company and take matters into her own hands, this
was just another step in her quest to deliver services to customers that were second to
none. As a woman in the male-dominated electrician profession, it has always been
Robin's competitive edge that has pushed her ahead with customers and employers. Her
focus on new electrical technology places her in a unique situation. Both her major
competitors had sought her services when Gardner and Miller announced the company's
departure from the area. Her reputation for quality work and excellent customer skills
could have landed her with a new employer and a bigger pay check. The Richmond tricounty area is booming with new commercial construction, including a new research park
and airport. Robin's technical skills in data retrieval and communication systems will be a
valuable asset for a company to have in the next five years.
Premiere Electric is well positioned to compete for numerous small contracts that focus
on new electrical technology. When combined with the advantages Premiere Electric has
in capturing the old Gardner and Miller contracts, the firm is in an excellent competitive
position. To develop good business strategies, perform a SWOT analysis of your
