one of the things i especially
appreciate about my own kitchen, when it
gets to this time of year, is how accessible
it is to the garden the doors are fung
open all day long at the weekends and we
are in and out as if its one fuid space. and
i think its fair to say that space has
become a central theme of the modern
kitchen. certainly the kitchen designers i
talk to report that the majority of their
clients are extending, remodelling and knocking down walls to create that
all-important open-plan feel. You will see this refected in the real kitchens we
are featuring this issue, from Jacob krichefskis bright and airy architectural
extension on page 50 to the colbert family, who moved their kitchen to form a
more logical fow from indoors out, on page 56. Our planning feature on page
68 looks at the often thorny issue of basement extensions and conversions.
Done well, with sensitivity, and with due respect to the neighbours, it can be a
highly efective way to gain space without the sprawl. Were also taking a good
look at lighting schemes a brilliant way to transform the kitchen by night and
make it a welcoming, entertaining and relaxing space all year round. i hope
that you will fnd plenty here to inspire your own kitchen project, and dont
forget you can always fnd more at beautifulkitchensblog.co.uk and by

precisely what she wanted from her new kitchen,
both functionally and aesthetically, Rikke
contacted a number of kitchen companies and
cabinetmakers. It was surprisingly difcult to
fnd anyone who was happy to work with my plans
rather than coming up with their own, she says.
Some tried to sell me units I didnt need, and one
suggested blocking out one of the windows.
Then Rikke came across Tim Higham of
Higham Furniture via a magazine article, and
his handleless Shaker-style cupboard doors were
exactly what shed been looking for. Tim had
some great ideas, always listened to me, and is a
great craftsman, says Rikke. The fnal result is
a warm, stylish, child-friendly kitchen, which
perfectly complements the style of the house.

opted for a single run of fat-fronted base units adjacent to the rooms large
windows, with a short return of full-length cabinets that would house the
integrated ovens and hide the sizeable fridge freezer. Open shelving
was also incorporated into the scheme for cookbooks and decorative items.
The rest of the room was to remain unftted and anchored by a dining
table the couple wanted to design themselves. We knew the long, single
countertop would ofer us enough worksurface, and that adding an island
would take up too much room, explains Lenny. So we went with an extralong dining table, which keeps the area feeling open and spacious. To create
extra storage, we built foor-to-ceiling cabinets either side of the entrance
to the sitting room. When it came to decorating, Lenny chose a subtle
colour scheme of chalky whites and pale greys, which ofset the rooms
natural materials beautifully and maximise the sense of space.
Ultimately, Lenny and Jeroen were keen to create a kitchen that felt
fun, warm and welcoming the real heart of their home.

Did the couple have a good idea of what they wanted?
Yes, they came to us with detailed plans to make the best use
of their new extension, and wanted a design with clean lines. The
fact that we were working with a space that hadnt been built yet
meant we had to be as accurate as we could be, but then leave
a tolerance at each end of the units, which wed fll when ftting.
Can you describe their chosen cabinetry?

We loved the clean lines of the B1 cabinetry and the fact that it was
handleless jumped out at us. Its simplicity was aesthetically very pleasing.
When it came to the layout, Jacob let designer Andrew Crowe take the
reins. We talked about what we needed and where to put the island, he
says. I was keen to have a bench and dining table on one side of the room,
and it made sense for the island to mirror them. We also wanted it to separate
the cooking and entertaining areas, so its orientation was led by that.
Efcient use of the space was important, too. Everything had to be
centrally located: pots and pans under the hob; utensils to hand all within
easy reach, says Jacob. I was very keen to use the full height of the space,
too, so theres also a lot of tall storage, although weve had to invest in a
couple of stepladders because were both too short to reach them!

The idea of the working triangle in kitchen design is a little old hat,
and we try to balance functionality with aesthetics, meaning the
positioning of appliances should not necessarily dictate the design.
Of course, practical elements such as set-down spaces for taking
food out of the ovens should be considered, but you can always
place the fridges and larder storage in a separate area in the kitchen.
Are you happy with the fnished result?
The best part of being a kitchen designer is working closely with the
client throughout the process, and enjoying the design journey as
much as the end result. People like Jacob, who are open to new ideas
but able to make decisions on what will best suit them, are key to a
successful project. What we always aim for is a happy client and
a scheme that I can be proud of as a designer. In this instance,
the kitchen has ftted into a beautifully crafted new space that
complements the house as a whole and adds something benefcial
to the everyday life of a fun-loving family. Thats enough for me.

best-laid plans
Once youre at planning stage, be
aware that you will likely need to
dig down further than the standard
room height of about 2.7m, to about
3.5m to accommodate underpinning
and structural work, so it makes
little diference cost-wise if you have
an existing cellar. Also, keep in
mind that this type of project can
be far more disruptive than other
renovation work. Creating a new
lower-level foor can take a long time
to fnish, plus it may involve moving
and disposing of large amounts of
subsoil, as well as possibly having
to underpin a party wall. However,
compare the average cost per sq m
of a new basement to adding a
side-return extension around
50,000 to 60,000 to generate
6 to 9sq m of additional space and
its clearly a cost-efective way of
creating a large additional space
in your home, says Marc Stchedrof.

he warmth and natural beauty of wood, with its imperfections and huge variety
of grains and tones, creates an individual look that perfectly suits modern-day
kitchens. Each cut, each plank, is totally unique not even natural stone can beat
it for versatility, colour variation and pattern plus its far more tactile. While
painted fnishes have their place, the real splendour of wood is in the exquisiteness of the grain.
A new breed of designers are making the most of woods inherent beauty, using it to add drama
and interest to both classic and contemporary schemes. Knots and gnarls, far from being a sign
of irregularity, are increasingly introduced to add character and texture. There are so many ways
wood can be used within the kitchen: for worktops, foors, as veneers on cabinetry, stand-alone pieces
of furniture such as a character island, panelling and even splashbacks, too. Good-quality wood
can last a lifetime, however all wood needs proper maintenance to keep it looking its best. But with
a plethora of wonderful qualities and intrinsic authenticity, wood is defnitely worth the efort.
distinctive beauty
Wood gets better with age, developing
an attractive patina and added character.
Some woods change colour, becoming slightly
darker and richer over time, adding more
warmth as they age. Theres a huge number
of diferent timbers to choose from, including
the ubiquitous yet endlessly classic oak and
exotic timbers zebrano and ebony. Use them
on their own, or combine with other woods
or solid-colour furniture for a striking efect.
fLoor LeveL
A natural timber foor ofers many options,
from the quintessential style of oak narrow
boards to the contemporary feel of a wide plank
in walnut. The plank sizes available will depend
on the type of wood you choose. Oak ofers the
greatest selection and is available in anything
from small parquet blocks to 4m-long planks.
Wood foors are either solid wood or engineered,
the latter is the best choice for kitchens. The
biggest beneft over a solid foor is that the
boards are more stable and less likely to twist
and warp with fuctuations in temperature
and humidity. If youre sold on solid timber,
hardwoods like oak dent and mark less easily.

MAKING A SPLASH
Splashbacks can be used to create an attractive
focus, and exotic timbers will do the job
perfectly. They are very much of the moment,
but are super high maintenance in a busy
kitchen. Even kitchen companies installing
unusual timbers have their reservations.
Clients love the look of them, but theyre not
the most practical option for a busy kitchen, and
take a considerable amount of time and efort to
maintain, says Graham Baker of Baker & Baker
Furniture. Over time, water and oil can mark
and stain the surface. You cant use a liquid
cleaner on a wooden splashback like you would
on tiles or glass, but you can sand back and re-oil
a wooden splashback every six months to a year
to keep it looking good. Alternatively, veneer
cladding behind shelving ofers the same
dramatic efect without the full-on upkeep.

TYPES OF LIGHTING
A good kitchen lighting system needs at least two elements:
bright, shadow-free task lighting for safe cooking and
preparation, and atmospheric illumination to create mood,
highlight architectural features and make the room feel
more inviting. Look at all areas of your kitchen and think
about the activities that will happen in each space, advises
interior designer Sarah Ward. Some areas, such as food
prep zones, sink run and above the hob, will require task
lighting, while others, such as the dining area, call for mood
and accent lighting. If people are going to be chatting to you
over a glass of wine while youre cooking, youll want them
to sit in a softer light so they can relax.
Task lighTing
Under-cupboard spots ftted directly above the hob, sink
and chopping board will ensure bright, focused task lighting.
Make sure you position them as close to the front edge of the
cupboard as possible, otherwise youll illuminate the back of
the worktop only. John Cullen Lighting recommends small,
compact fuorescents or LED under-cupboard downlighters
that are slim enough to be recessed into the bottom of wall
units. Flexible LED strip lighting mounted on the underside
of cupboards is another option. Many kitchens now include a
multifunction island with built-in appliances, sink and seating
area. With no wall cupboards to work with, ceiling-mounted
lights, fush-ftted for a modern streamlined look, with
directional spots and the right beam width to create a focused
light, are the ideal solution. Exposed fttings tend to collect
cooking grime so, if possible, opt for recessed or semi-recessed
fttings, advises John Cullens design director, Sally Storey.
ambienT lighTing
For wider mood lighting, start by looking at how much natural
light comes into your kitchen, noting the number of windows
and the direction they face. The key to creating the perfect
lighting for your kitchen lies in layering the efects, says
Kiran Noonan of John Lewis of Hungerford. Your choices
will depend on the size of the space and whether your room
has a high or low ceiling. If the kitchen is multifunctional,
with a strong living element, its worth considering ambient
illumination such as dimmable wall lights and eyeball designs
(which can be moved around), as well as decorative systems,
such as shelf and in-cabinet lights. A rise-and-fall fxture
above the table can be pulled down for a cosy candlelit supper

These are fush-ftted into the wall and integrated behind smoothly panelled

letting them create bulky obstructions, which tend to look unplanned.

Once you work with the structure of the room, rather than against it, things
fall into place. As soon as I mapped out how the pillars could be incorporated,
it was obvious that the table would be best sited under the roof lantern.
Then it was a matter of building the remaining units, adopting a less is more
policy. It was important that these suited the scale of the space we used
fewer cabinets, but made each larger, in keeping with the size of the room.

How did you design the layout?
The island is the focal point, with a prep zone on one side and
an area for bar stools on the other. Because the work space is
orientated towards the rest of the room, the cook can join in
the conversation with family and friends at the bar stools or
dining table, without feeling like theyre stuck in the corner.
Walkways are wide to create a sense of fow around the room
and avoid pinch points. The prep sink is separate from the main
one, so the island doesnt get cluttered with dirty pots and pans.

minimalist in design and fts almost seamlessly into the worktop.

What were your main objectives when you
started planning your new kitchen?
The main surface is solid granite; its very loud and characterful. I
prefer natural stone to man-made stones, which lack personality.
On the lower levels, Ive used a tropical hardwood called Bubinga
because its more forgiving on plates and elbows than stone.
Which appliances did you choose?
Warm-up act
A burst of burnt orange in the dining and
seating areas brings richness and warmth
to the otherwise all-white scheme
The palette was inspired by the Mies van der Rohe chairs. We had
the feature wall colour-matched to the Tibetan tigers artwork, which
is actually an antique door. These colours make it cosy in winter.
What do you love most about the room now?

Beautiful kitchens
One last
thing...
Its the personal touches that give your
kitchen character and make it feel like
home. Here, a creative approach to the foor,
a vintage wall cupboard and a distressed
splashback all help to balance the neat lines
of the modern kitchen cabinetry and bistro
furniture. Do try this at home.
