Building a Sustainable GeoData Ecosystem

Catalysts

Enablers

see the value of GeoData, especially when Open. They know

that "locals know best" and enable and teach people to Map.
They advocate and facilitate government agencies and
professionals to create and use open geodata.

are enthusiastic about technology, they know what is going

on in their neighbourhood. They love to go out, map and
document what is there and how

Sparking local involvement by "non-professionals"

Motivating governments and businesses to open up data

implementing standards, documenting APIs, opening "easy access"

Mapping their Communities

Making data available in OpenStreetMap
Making data available for which the license is

are Tech savy, they have the skills to turn Geodata into
applications. Using Open Source and API's, they turn ideas
into prototypes

spot new opportunities. Taking prototypes to the next level.

Offering jobs and find the right audience

geeks, programmers, students and businesses that

add value to and through the data
people that want to create applications or "output"
(like statistical maps, visualizations) in the broadest sense

Reaching out to people that are willing to

test and use apps created by the "Builders"
Contribute either financial or from a
user / market perspective

Custodians
owners of Data that can be convinced of the merits of opening up and
contributing their Data assets to the geodata ecosystem
Government Agencies that collect and maintain GIS Data Assets
Businesses, Entrepreneurs that generate valuable spatial or attribute data

The UWI Mona

Source

Social
Development
Commission

The UWI Mona SOURCE is a community venture

established by the JN Foundation that seeks to
establish a platform/catalyst for innovation to a
previously underserved area, by providing a costeffective internet caf, a reference library for
students, a childrens club, a Job Placement
programme, as well as access to micro-financial
services
Social Development Commission is a key
government agency with a mandate and interest
in community development. SDC has created a
repository of Digital maps of community
physical, social and economic infrastructure.

The program intends to see community residents engage with

interactive community mapping to profile community assets. The
capacity of the residents to utilise ICM tools will ensure the
sustainability of these maps and also can improve the provision of
community services as the openness of community information can
support the delivery of such services.
The program intends to see tourism students and researchers
participate in interactive community mapping and actively develop
artefacts that can be utilised in the tourism industry. Current
information will be provided for research and development projects
and the tourism industry will benefit from improved resources to
innovate products and services.
The program intends to see that tourism businesses engage with
the use of interactive community maps to improve the performance
and success of business entities. This will improve the technology
and data literacy skills of tourism businesses to develop innovative
tourism products and services.
The program intends to see that The UWI Mona Source provides
hosting services for open data and ICM activities. This will support a
network of interactive community mappers and allow for the
development of new and innovative skills within the community.
The UWI Mona Source can become a hub for open data and ICM
activities.

Tourism Apps
Developers

Computer Science / Software Developer students

at UWI and other tertiary institutions with
entrepreneurial aspirations

The program intends to see that the Social Development

Commission will integrate ICM into its mapping artefacts program.
As a key government agency with an interest in community
development this agency is an important partner in scaling ICM
throughout Jamaica. The adoption of ICM skills will be crucial in
achieving successful ICM projects throughout the island.
The program intends to see that Apps Developers utilise community
maps to develop new services. This will provide an opportunity for
new start-ups that can build innovative applications using the
interactive community maps as open data. These apps will allow for
greater collaboration between the tourism stakeholders at the
community level. Tourism apps can improve tourist receptive
services.
