EVALUATION 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and

ancillary texts?
The demands of the indie pop genre arent as strong as the demands of pop.
Indie pop allows more leniency on the artists image therefore we found it
obtainable for the artists to have a less picture perfect look. The idea of a more
laid back and effectively flawed look is carried out through the three products
as the artists dont have tamed hair or extravagant outfits. A theme and joining
factor of my three products is the genre convention of indie pop artists having a
plain background. This convention was found in the products such as Jessie Js
and Adeles magazine advert and digipak, which in my opinion brings a clear
focus on the artist which would make their products stand out on a shelf.
The outfits of the band in all three products are fairly similar, having a combining
theme between the video and the ancillary texts. The indie pop genre doesnt
have a demand for topless men or provocative women, therefore the outfits were
a way of determining the genre as well as showing a distinctive style within the
combination of the products. The video Midnight Moon shows a link with the
digipak by the artists black and sophisticated outfits, as well as the effect of the
strobe light being similar to the distorted effect on the digipak cover. These
distortions however arent followed in the magazine advert as the advert is
aimed at a wider audience (it would be found in a generic music magazine)
therefore to intrigue the audience to see more, the product would be more
effective with a clear indication of who the artist was. Usually, a singles music
video is released before the album, so if the audience has seen the music video
but not taken note of the bands name, the clear indication of the band members
on the magazine advert will lead the intrigued audience member onto the
digipak where the artists image doesnt have to be as clear. This chain of events
is effective as the combination of the main product and the ancillary texts can
afford to differ slightly and still be recognised as a unit.
The music video involves the location of the white room and is made to look
more interesting with coloured lights. Also the digipak and magazine advert
images were taken in the same location (the white room) but this time with just a
plain background so that there could be elements to edit on Photoshop. Within
our video we used a lighting effect of shining a torch through a water bottle
(referred to as water lighting) which we found gave the shot a textured effect.
This element was incorporated in my digipak, by having all panels except the
front cover using an edited image of the water lighting shadow effect as a
background therefore carrying a theme between the video and the digipak. The
magazine advert doesnt include the water lighting element however still acts
effectively as a combination of all three products as there is continuity with the
artists on the cover of the video, digipak and advert. Also the water lighting
effect is there primarily for aesthetic purposes, which creates a parallel with the
music video having no narrative to it - it includes elements for aesthetic
purposes.
There is continuity within all three products by having Hannah on the left and
Louis on the right which is effective as it shows the three products as a package.
Twentyone pilots use this theme in their images and videos Tyler is always on
the right and Josh is on the left and I feel this is effective because it contributes
to the branding of the band. Another branding element is the record label being

placed on the digipak and the magazine advert. Bass records acts as a joining
factor of both products, showing an ownership over the band and the music they
produce. Bass records would also be credited in the description of the video if the
video were real, again being an effective combining agent for the three products.
Two of my products (the video and the advert) allow both members of the band
to have the same amount of screen time which is an element in some bands
such as ustheduo and Oh Wonder. Duos such as Marian Hill have one member
which is more focused on than another (usually because of the individuals
image), so to act upon this tendency, I created a verisimilitude of Louis being
slightly more important than Hannah, I included in my digipak a close up of
Louis, and also credited him in the legal information for being the songwriter.
Favouring Louis more in the digipak isnt effective in the combination of all three
products because the other two include a shared amount of exposure, however I
decided to do this because I thought the single image of him worked well with
my digipak.
