Justin Helmuth
2nd Grade English as a Second Language

Common Core Standards:

1. Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of
key details in a text.
2. Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message,
lesson, or moral.
3. Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
Lesson Summary:
This lesson will help the kids to understand more vocabulary for the English language while also developing
an ear for the vocabulary as well. They will also be reading more and more English as they attempt to learn
more vocabulary.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson plan will take about two hours total. I will split the two hours in to three different segments of 40
minutes. I will do this lesson plan over three consecutive days.
Commentary: My approach to this lesson is going to be an odd one. It honestly will be either a big success and
very helpful to the students or it could just bore them. The challenge I will find with younger kids is that they
are much harder to keep on task. It could be a struggle for me to keep them paying attention. The way that I
will keep my students hooked is that I will make them each take a turn reading a paragraph out loud as we
read throughout a small book. This will keep them paying attention because nobody wants to be called on and
have no clue where the class is.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: As a class we will begin reading a small book. We will read it as a class, paragraph by paragraph. While
reading we will stop to address odd words or words the kids may have questions about.

For the first 30 minutes we will be reading as a class.

For the next 10 minutes they will work on a vocabulary sheet that I will create using some words we had
covered in the first half of the book. I will then give them a short worksheet to complete before class the next
day.

Day 2: This day we will be finishing the book in the first 25 minutes of class.
Next we will go over a list of ten words from the text chosen by the students. This will take about 10 minutes.
Next I will assign the children to play at least one memory game at the following website.
http://www.vocabulary.co.il/english-language-games/ At this site they will play a game of memory using only
English vocabulary words. This game also includes audio so every time they turn up a card it also says the
word in English.
Day 3: This will be the last day with this lesson.
During the first 10 minutes of class we will discuss the assignment from the previous evening and determine
how well it worked with the students based on their responses and memory of the vocabulary words.
During the last 30 minutes of class I will give the students a 20 question vocabulary quiz over the words we
covered in the book and online in the memory games.

Pre-Assessment:
As a pre-assessment we will determine if any of the students have already read the book we are considering or
not. If any of the children have previously read the book we will find a new book that none of the kids have
read. I will also read the book before the class does to figure out which words I will be quizzing them on and
helping them out with. I will be informing them to pay attention to who, what, where, when, and why in the
book.
Scoring Guidelines:
With the quiz coming at the end of the book, I will definitely warn the students of this before we even start the
book. I will grade the quizzes with an open mind. If the answer is correct or contains the right idea it will be
correct. Students scoring 17 out of 20 will pass the test while students scoring under 17 out of 20 will be
addressed after the class. I will hopefully be able to assess the problem with the students quiz or where they
went wrong and help them to individually understand everything brought forward on the quiz. If they continue
to fail and not understand I would tutor them individually after class. Also I would recommend some of the
students to the Khan Academy.

Post-Assessment:
The post-assessment I have chosen is in the form of a quiz or a short exam.
Scoring Guidelines:
It will be a 20 question quiz or exam. The students must score 17 out 20 or better. I will inform them of
this before they take the quiz.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: I will give the students the instructions for everything before we even begin reading the book. I will
give the students a bonus 5 questions at the end of the quiz for those wishing to get bonus points. For the
students learning at a slower pace I will give more time to take the quiz. However this time extension will be
available to any student who wants it.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: I could always assign a bonus project like creating a poster with the vocabulary words in English
and their definitions. Also I have thought about including a simple powerpoint as extra credit. It would have to
be somewhat simple because of the students being so young and inexperienced with Microsoft Powerpoint.

Extension
http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL/2/
Students can go to this site to see the bigger picture of what they will be learning. Visiting this site prior to the
lesson would be helpful because it will help prepare them for what they will be learning.

Homework Options and Home Connections

The first night, I will assign them a simple 10 question worksheet to be completed by the following day. I will
include the online memory game as homework on the second night. This will be using a website mainly used
for games including English vocabulary.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This lesson could also be incorporated into a Spanish class or a history class as well. With the history class you
would have to use a different website or none at all. With Spanish, it would basically be the same besides
flipping the languages.

Materials and Resources:

For teachers

They will need a copy of the book or a PDF version of the book to print out and give to
the students. Read the book before the class reads it. You will need to create a
worksheet based on the story in the book.

For students

The students will need a copy of the book or a PDF file printout. This will be provided
by the teacher. They will also need home internet and computer access or access via
ipad, ipod, tablet, or other mobile device.

Key Vocabulary
Character, summary, plot, storyline, climax, conclusion or ending

Additional Notes
Depending how this works, I may change the website that the students need to visit but no matter what, I
would include a fun game for the kids to encourage learning.
