What have you done to help the environment?

Students at Derwent Secondary School have started some exciting schemes to protect and
improve their local environment. Read the school blog and find out what they have done.
The large, old pond in the centre of our village is really pretty, but people have put a lot
of litter in it recently. With the help of some friends, weve picked up all the litter, and pulled things
out of the pond. There was an old wheel and supermarket basket in it! Were going to put some
sh in it, and weve asked some men from our village to plant some trees around the pond.
Marie and Louise@schoolblog.com
Its hard to imagine how many people use a lot of paper and then throw it away every day.
When I thought about this, I decided that I wanted to do something about it, so I talked to my
friend, Hayley. Together weve started a recycling programme at our school. Weve put
a recycling box in every classroom and collected a lot of used paper. A special truck will
come next week to collect the paper for recycling.

Theres a large playground near my house where children couldnt play because it was so dirty
and full of litter. My two brothers and I have decided to tidy the place up. We have picked up all
the rubbish and hung up a sign on a fence that says: Please Keep Our Park Clean. It was really
hard work but Im very pleased now when I see some local children playing there!
