Grade 8 Math

Content to be Taught (Scope)

Strand: Number
General Outcome: Develop number sense.
Overview: Students will be taught perfect square and square roots for whole numbers;
to approximate squares of whole numbers that are not perfect squares; percents greater
than or equal to 0%; ratio and rate, to solve problems involving rates, ratios and
proportional reasoning; to multiply and divide positive factions and mixed numbers; to
multiply and divide integers.
Chapters 2,3,4
Strand: Shape and Space (Measurement)
General Outcome: Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.
Overview: Students will be taught: the Pythagorean theorem; to draw and construct nets for 3-D
objects; how to determine the surface area of right rectangular prisms, right triangular prisms and
right cylinders; to develop and apply formulas for determining the volume of right rectangular
prisms, right triangular prisms and right cylinders.
Chapters 3,5
Strand: Shape and Space (3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes)
General Outcome: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
relationships among them.
Overview: Students will be taught to draw and interpret top, front and side views of 3-D objects
composed of right rectangular prisms.
Chapter 5
Strand: Statistics and Probability (Data Analysis)
General Outcome: Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems.
Overview: Students will be taught to critique ways in which data is presented in circle graphs, line
graphs, bar graphs and pictographs.

Math 8 Course Overview
Math 8 is comprised of 11 units that follow the Alberta Program of Studies. From
September to December, myself and 32 students will complete the first 5 units.
Classes will generally run in the same nature, with a launch activity to activate and
assess prior knowledge which will move into guided class notes, class discussions, guided
examples, and group practice. Students will be given time to work on practice problems
for the remainder of class. These will serve as their assignments and should be handed in
the next day. Some students may get farther along than other students, but I will have a
list that will be taken in for marks to see how are they are doing. Assignments/Practice
problems will serve as both a formative and summative assessment. Students are
welcome to collaborate with peers when working on practice problems. For this reason,
assignments will not hold a lot of weight in their total mark. Weekly quizzes and unit
tests will make up the majority of their summative marks, as well as their final exam
which will be worth 20% of the total grade.
My main goal in teaching mathematics is to help students learn problem solving
skills as well as building foundational knowledge that will assist them in solving real world
problems. Math will assist students in developing logical thinking in which they can
organize information clearly and concisely. In particular, Math 8 (Chapters 1-5) will give
students foundation knowledge in statistics, understanding percentages, and
measurement particularly in surface area and the Pythagorean theorem.
