SECTION ONE (50 MARKS)
You are advised to spend about 60 minutes on this section.
Read the following passage and answer all the questions in Parts A, B, C, D and E.
Master the Art of Reading
It is no secret that reading and the love of books go hand in hand with
being a successful student. Morris Allen English values the importance of
reading in its English enrichment classes. During every lesson, the native
English — speaking teachers nurture students’ love and enthusiasm for
learning English with an interactive approach, supported by carefully selected
books.
Reading and sharing good books happens during every lesson. All of the
English — learning students explore good models of the language by reading
good books and being involved in discussions about themselves. This helps
them to grow in their comprehension of English as being left to simply enjoy
good books alone is not enough. That is why their three — step approach to
reading - Reading To, Reading With and Reading By ~ is so effective in
helping students master English
The first step — Reading To, provides children with models for good
English grammar. In each lesson, native English ~ speaking teachers spend
time reading to students from alll levels nursery right to secondary, Despite
what many people believe, children are never too old to be read to as the
interaction that develops through this activity enriches the experience of
reading. It is good when parents read books that the children find challenging
‘because it helps them unlock the wonders of learning
The second step — Reading With, provides the students opportunity to
show how clever they are. So during every lesson, they get to read with their
teacher and their peers. These opportunities for student ~ teacher interaction,
as they read passages together, help the students grow in their knowledge of

vocabulary and grammar. After all, it is always more fun when parents and
their children take turns to read parts of a book.
The third step - Reading By, prepares the students become independent
readers once they feel the success of reading books by themselves. In fact, it
encourages their love of English when they understand what they are
reading. This is why children need to read lots of books that are easy for
them. Research shows that children who enjoy reading the most are the ones
permitted to select books they are interested in.
If you have not been trying this three ~ level approach with your children.
you could try putting it into practice today. Alternatively, you could call one of
the Morris Alien English branches to enquire about enrolling your child into
the English enrichment programme today. At Morris Allen English, the
experienced teachers do more than just teach reading. By incorporating
English language skills with a theme ~ based interactive learning approach
they make learning the language fun for all levels.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions in PART E.
Rich in Natural Beauty
Those wishing to visit Pahang can expect new and exciting tourism products to
explore. With the recent discovery of the Merapoh caves, the State is bound to add
another nature product to its already well ~ known eco — tourism.
Pahang Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin
said the state government had agreed to promote Merapoh as a caving paradise. ‘It is
estimated that there are up to 500 limestone caves that have yet to be explored and
they have started to attract the attention of tourist from the United Kingdom, France,
Japan, Germany and Crotia,” he said
Mohd Shakar added that eco — tourism would still be a main focus of the state's
tourism industry as the products have their own uniqueness. As such, a tourism action
plan seminar and workshop was held recently to prepare a plan that would revise
Pahang’s tourism products as well as strategise the development and management of
the industry, "Everyone knows Pahang is a state rich in natural beauty, so we don’t
want to overlook that, We want locals and foreign tourists to have a taste for
themselves the natural beauty with this new action plan,” said Mohd Sharkar. Pahang is
famous for its cool highlands, beautiful beaches, islands and breathtaking rainforests.
Tourists will be spoilt for choice with iconic destinations such as Taman Negara,
Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Cherating Beach and Fraser's Hill, among
others. New attractions in the state include the reopened of Sultan Abu Bakar Museum
and the Sungai Lembing tin mine tunnels. The Sultan Abu Bakar Museum is sporting a
new look after being closed for renovation for seven years.SBLE1033 English for Communication | Matric No.
Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah, who reopened the museum, said it had
reached maturity since it was adapted from Istana Kota Beram in 1976. “Itis now filled
with exhibits as well as interior and exterior landscape designs that fit the flow of time, It
has ultra - modern features that show off the specialness of the museum,” he said at
the launch last year
Meanwhile, visitors to Sungai Lembing could now have their own tin mining
expedition and relive the glory days with the opening of the refurbished underground
tunnels as a new attraction. A tram similar to the one used by miners is available for
visitor to ride and explore parts of the underground tine mine, which was the deepest
and longest tin mine in the world
Sungai Lembing was once known as the El ~ Derado of the East as it was Pahang's
richest tin manufacturer. However, Mohd Sharkar said that Pahang is still lacking in
competitive edge as the focus is only on a few stable products although the state
receives a high number of tourist arrivals. “This has caused product fatigue as it could
no longer fulfil tourist expectations. This is why the committee thinks there is a need for
new efforts and ideas to give a new life to this industry’.
