Read the following passage and answer all the questions in PARTS A, B, C, D, and E. A Hidden Minority: Left-handers | Malaysia has hundreds of minority groups. Some of them are defined by their ethnic composition. Others have distinctive cultures and languages. Since Independence, much progress has been made towards providing equal opportunities for everyone. However, one minority group continues to face this discrimination, This is the group of people who are left-handed. " Left-handers are not a small group. Nearly one person in ten is left- handed. This means that there are about 2 million left-handers in Malaysia and more than 600 million in the world. There are no laws that prevent left- handers from living, working eating or studying where they want to. They face a different type of discrimination from other minorities. They live in a world designed for the right-handed majority. Common items from can- openers to scissors, from goff clubs to controls on electrical appliances, pose problems for left-handers. They also have to make a special effort to learn how to do everyday things like writing or winding a watch. i Although a modern society does not look down on left-handers, in the past the situation may have been different. A study of language suggests that left-handedness was regarded as inferior or even evil. The word Jeft comes from an ancient English word /yff meaning weak or worthless. If something is ‘left-field’, it is slightly odd; a ‘left-handed compliment’ is an insult. Words for Jeft that have been borrowed from other languages also have negative meanings. ‘Sinister’, which means evil or harmful in English, is the Latin word for left. The French word for left, ‘gauche’, means awkward in English 10 15 20 ‘SBLE1033 English for Communication | Matric No. Vv In English, the word right always has positive meanings. It also means proper or correct. If you say things are ‘going right’, you mean they are working out well. A ‘right-hand man’ is a very helpful assistant. Words meaning right borrowed from other languages all have positive meanings too. ‘Dextrous’ from Latin and ‘adroit’ from French both mean skilful or clever. Even in Bahasa Malaysia, we have orang kanan {right-hand man). Why are most people right-handed? If being right-handed or left-handed were simply a matter of chance, we would expect that the proportion of left- handers and right-handers would be almost equal. Anthropologists have suggested that it may have something to do with the development of right- handed tools, causing right-handed people to become dominant. Scientists are investigating the effect of prenatal influences on babies’ brains that determine right- or left-handedness. However, no one has yet found an answer to the question ‘Adapted from: Ainul Rusmin Ghazal, C.K. Leong, C. PaulEvanson, K. Krishnakumari, Marina Ismail Masturah Alias, ..., Soraya Mohd Nashir.
