The Boys of Summer

(1869) Are Here!
Rising Sun 1869 Rules Baseball Team Schedules
Games Reflecting the Early Years of Americas
Pasttime
The Rising Sun-Ohio County Parks & Recreation Department and the
Ohio County Historical Society now have a vintage base ball team known as
the Belle River Ball Club. The team plays by the rules of 1869. In 1869
Rising Sun had a team known as the Belle River Ball Club and played teams
from Aurora and Rabbit Hash.
The current Belle River Ball Club took on the Huntington, Indiana
Hilltoppers in a doubleheader on May 2. Bad news for the local team as
they lost both games. The score is not important; however the team had a
good time and is practicing for the next doubleheader on July 11. The team
will play on the soccer fields by Grand Victoria at 1:00 p.m. Cranks, as fans
were known as at this time, are encouraged to come and cheer the local
team on to victory.
Another game is scheduled for August 22 also at the same location.
Time yet to be determined.
Some of the rules are that only strikes are counted, no balls. Also,
since there are no gloves worn, a one bounce rule applies, meaning that if
the ball is caught on the fly or before the second bounce, the batter is out.
The Ohio County Historical Museum (212 S. Walnut Street, Rising Sun,
Indiana, 47040) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is
located along the Ohio River Scenic By-way. Museum hours are 11-4 Mon-
day-Saturday, 1:30-4:30 Sunday, and closed Wednesdays. Admission to the
museum only is $2.50 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens, $1.00 for high
school students, and free for members and children 12 and under. For more
information about the event or museum please call Bill Dichtl at (812) 438-
4915.
BATTER UP! Clayton Lamkin menaces the Huntington
Hilltoppers as a member of the Rising Sun Belle River Ball
Club, an 1869 rules baseball team.

MAYORS CORNER
I want to take a brief opportunity this issues to thank the veterans who have helped to keep our country
free. From distant shores, deserts, and jungles to the waters off the coast they stand and have stood vigil night
and day so that libertys lamp would not go out. Last
year we celebrated the Year of the Veteran here in
Rising Sun. We had the Travelling Wall at the soc-
cer fields where thousands came to pay their respects
and we erected the Veterans Tower on the riverfront
as a way of remembering the sacrifices that have
shaped us.
Now, in this time between the somber Memo-
rial Day and the jubilant Fourth of July holidays,
which happens to include Flag Day, let us remem-
ber and honor our veterans, living and passed, and May God Bless our troops who are
still in harms way 10,000 miles away from home and family.

Crosses in honor and remembrance of veterans adorn the court house lawn as they
have for years each Memorial Day in Rising Sun.

Union forces defending breastworks on May 3 at the Civil War

Encampment held at Shiner Community Park.
The weather forecast for the Civil War Encampment was for a
rainy weekend and it reduced the number of re-enactors attending. How-
ever, those in attendance did an exceptional job of interacting for visi-
tors providing lots of information on life during the Civil War.
On Friday to kick the event off a handful of soldiers participated
in school day where several classes from the Elementary Middle School
came to visit. The classes mingled around the tents to learn various
topics about the Civil War and camplife. Robert E. Lee presented two
programs at the school.
The program tent hosted several programs including Abraham
Lincoln portrayed by Danny Russel and Robert E. Lee portrayed by Don
Locke, other programs gave insight into the role of women during the
war and how the war affected civilians.
Shiner Community Park is an excellent setting for the Civil War
Encampment and offers many beautiful opportunities for pictures as if
it was the 1860s again. The battle scenarios had as a backdrop the
farmland, hills, and woods.
This free event was sponsored by the city of Rising Sun, Ohio
County/Rising Sun Parks Department, Rising Sun/Ohio County Tour-
ism Bureau, and the Rising Sun Regional Foundation.

Holds Fish Fry June 6
Make plans to come to the Rising Sun Fire Department on
Saturday June 6 beginning at 11:00 AM when they will hold their
annual Fish Fry. Sale of the dinners will continue until all the fish

recent creation of a Rising Sun Fire Department Womens Auxiliary
for the first time in its history. Any wives, mothers, sisters and daugh-
ters of Rising Sun firemen are invited to join and these new mem-
bers will be the charter members of the organization.
The first meeting of the Auxiliary was held the week of the
15th of April with about 14 in attendance. Karah White-Miller was
elected its first president. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to aid in
the general support of the fire department in its duties and commit-
ments, whether it is at the scne of a fire assisting firemen with drinks
and snacks, assisting the victims of a fire or other disaster, or in sup-
port of the departments fundraising.
