Executive Summary
The purpose of the Fantastic 5 team is to come together and figure out How to create harmony
in a busy household with messy housemates? A new group of five housemates have recently
come together to share a house while going to school. When everyone moved in together no
ground rules were made for keeping the house clean and everyone was expected to clean up after
themselves. No direct conversation was had about this issue. The first couple of weeks before
school began, the house remained pretty clean and everyone was doing a little bit to pitch in.
However once the semester started and everyone was busy with work and classes, the common
living spaces of the shared house became cluttered and funky. Some of the housemates are
becoming frustrated with one another for the lack of participation in cleaning of common areas.
Our team used Deweys Reflective Thinking Process in order come to a plausible solution that
efficiently solved the problem. The process for our team to accomplish a solution was to first,
define the problem. Second, we each did research on a problem analysis area, focusing on
characteristics of messy housemates, stakeholders in the situation, resources, history and
policies/politics surrounding messy housemates. Third, we analyzed the problem using the
research on the problem analysis areas. Fourth, we began to talk about the problem and
brainstorm possible solutions, outcomes, barriers and consequences.
The criteria for coming up with a solution was to: 1) keep open lines of communication, 2) show
mutual respect, 2) and coming to consensus when deciding on a goal that all the housemates feel
is fair, 3) avoid passive-aggressive acts and bickering behind other roommates backs, 4) all the
roommates will compromise, 5) to unify and live together without the daily creation of new
drama.
After our analysis of the information gathered, we decided that the best solution would be to hire
a cleaning service on a bi-weekly basis to clean the common areas of the household. This
solution fulfilled all our criteria and generated the highest resulting score out of all our solutions.
The cost of the service was comparable to our other solutions. We felt that the cleaning service
would be worth the cost of not losing a friendship or compromising harmony in the household
was the result. We concluded that each member of the home should contribute $10 every other
week to pay for the service.
