New York-Penn League History
The New York-Penn League is the oldest continually operated Class A League in Minor
League Baseball. The league is one of the most well-known and respected in the game,
having been the starting point for hundreds of major leaguers and several Baseball Hall
of Famers, including Wade Boggs, Nellie Fox, Phil Niekro, Tony Perez, Warren Spahn and
Robin Yount, as well as baseballs all-time leader in hits, Pete Rose.
In addition, recent big league stars who have played in the NYPL include Jason Bay,
Miguel Cabrera, Chris Carpenter, Carlos Delgado, Roy Oswalt, Aramis Ramirez, Scott Pod-
sednik, Johan Santana, Billy Wagner and Kerry Wood. One former NYPL player went on
to receive a different honor, as a member of the Football Hall of Fame. John Elway, who
finished his illustrious NFL career with 300 passing touchdowns, was an outfielder with
the Oneonta Yankees during the 1982 season. Another gridiron star, Ricky Williams, who
went on to star for the Miami Dolphins, played for the Batavia Muckdogs in 1998 and hit
.283 with the club.
The league was founded in 1939 with the name Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League.
This was generally shortened to the PONY League. The original teams included the
Batavia (N.Y.) Clippers, the Bradford (Pa.) Bees, the Hamilton (Ontario) Red Wings, the
Jamestown (N.Y.) Jaguars, the Niagara Falls (N.Y.) Rainbows and the Oleon (N.Y.) Oilers.
The Oilers, a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate, won both the regular season and playoff champi-
onships in the inaugural season of 1939.
The Hamilton Red Wings folded early in the 1956 season, and without any teams in On-
tario, the league adopted its current name, New York-Penn League, in 1957. The league
crossed back into Canada with the formation of the St. Catherines Blue Jays in 1986. They
were joined by the Hamilton Red Birds in 1987 and the Welland Pirates in 1989, but all
three clubs had moved back across the border by 2000.
To celebrate the rich history and heritage of the New York-Penn League, fans have the
opportunity to vote on the NYPL All-Time Team at VoteNYPL.com. The voting will be
open until August 1, and the NYPL All-Time Team will be announced at the NYPL All-Star
Game in Staten Island on August 17, 2010.
