LESSON PLAN FORMAT & EXPLANATIONS ENGLISH SECONDARY

Below is the Lesson Plan Format that the English Department requires you to employ during
your Methods and Block Courses in English and during your Block Experience and Student
Teaching. You may be asked to modify this format for your Education Courses. But, ALL your
Lessons for Block courses and Student Teaching should follow this format and complete it
comprehensively. This procedure is in place for both original and borrowed lessons.

Your Name: Leah Biroscak

Title of Unit: Difference
Title of Lesson: Difference Assignment - Groups
Grade Level(s): Grade 12
Objective(s):
o Students will be able to effectively work in groups to create and present a project
to the class based on their findings
State Standards:
Standard - CC.1.4.11-12.N
Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation
and its significance, establishing one or multiple points of view, and introducing a
narrator and/or characters.
Rationale: This lesson is important to the students because they are choosing the groups
they want to work with and what novels they are reading for the unit. This teaches
students to work within groups and communicate effectively. After today, each group is
responsible for reading their chosen text, completing a project, and give a short
presentation to their classmates.
Procedures: Below is an outline to follow you DO NOT have to include all the
questions you will ask or what you will say, but be specific and comprehensive about the
steps/procedures you will follow from beginning to end.
Lesson Beginning
Yesterday we discussed the types of differences and stereotypes
associated with each difference. After you are put into groups today,
you will choose 1 text from a list that you would all be interested in
reading, doing a project, and giving a presentation on.
Before we get into anything, take 5 minutes to write about the prompt
that is on the board; Has being different in terms of race changed in
literature? Ask if anyone would like to share what theyve said.
Once the students get into groups, encourage them to think about this
question while picking out texts they will be reading as a group.
Lesson Development
Let the students choose their own groups
Should be 3-4 students per group
Once the students are in the groups, pass out the assignment

Go over in detail what is expected of the students from this

assignment and what they will be doing.
Let the students choose 1 book per group. Groups will be chosen at
random and groups are not allowed to read the same book.
After books are chosen, have the students brainstorm and discuss what
their plans are and how they will proceed with their plan.

Lesson Ending
Tell the students that they should start reading their chosen books as a
group as soon as possible. There will be class time to read and work on
the project, but they should do it outside of the classroom as well.
Tomorrow the students will be discussing how present-day media
outlets/advertisement companies view race.

Assessment: VERY IMPORTANT Assessment for this particular lesson plan will not
happen until a later date.
Materials Needed: Paper, pencils/pens, assignment sheet for project, book list, books,
board, markers/chalk
Special Adaptations: If groups are not working well or the teacher does not think they
will get anything done, they will be adjusted. Students were given the opportunity to
choose their groups. However, if they show me that they cant do that other
arrangements will be made.
Anticipated Difficulties: Students all wanting to read the same book.
Reflection: AFTER the lesson complete a brief reflection on its effectiveness.
