Gather library resources for your unit.

Your library should contain


at least 10 titles. Age-appropriate children's books (fiction and
non-fiction),
1. TITLE: Earthquake in the Early Morning
AUTHOR: Mary Pope Osborne
SUMMARY: Jack and Anne end up in San Francisco. When they arrive
they realize there has been an earthquake and see all the damage that
has been caused. They offer their shoes to two boys whose materials
have all been destructed by the quake. Jack and Anne proceed to try to
save the city
2. TITLE: Twister on Tuesday
AUTHOR: Mary Pope Osborne
SUMMARY: Jack and Anne discover a twister after meeting pioneers.
They need to decide who to take care of and save from the twister.
They need to warn the teachers and students at the school house, but
they also need to find a way to save themselves.
3. TITLE: Tsunami Kids
AUTHOR: Paul Forkan
SUMMARY: After a disastrous tsunami struck two young boys had to
learn how to survive by themselves. They wanted to do something with
their lives and forget about the disaster. They decide to organize a
foundation to help children who have survived disasters and need
basic materials.
4. TITLE: Extreme Weather Systems 3rd grade Geography Series
AUTHOR: BABY Professor
SUMMARY: A book talking about the different types of weather
conditions. More of a factual book. Includes many images and
describes some forms of natural disasters and how they occur.
5. TITLE: TORNADOS!
AUTHOR: Gail Gibbons
SUMMARY: Very informational book about tornados that includes many
pictures. Talks about how tornados form, where common locations are,
and how to prepare and take cover during a tornado. There are many
interesting facts and it is a good book for younger students who are
just learning about natural disasters.
6. TITLE: Hurricanes!
AUTHOR: Gail Gibbons
SUMMARY: Provides many facts about hurricanes and is great for
younger children. Has plenty of images to catch students attentions.

This book will talk about how Hurricanes form, their classifications and
instruct safe methods about what to do during a hurricane. Also
mentions storm predictions and methods for predicting.
7. TITLE: Volcano!
AUTHOR: Ellen J. Prager
SUMMARY: About volcanos what they are and how they can erupt with
lava. More of an adventure story that gives facts about volcanos. Talks
about various volcanos including the most massive ones.
8. TITLE: Can You Survive an Earthquake?
AUTHOR: Rachel Hanel
SUMMARY: A story that allows the reader to make spontaneous
decisions about what he or she might do If caught in an earthquake.
Talks about and gives options on different locations and settings one
might be in during this event. From the country to a city how will the
disaster affect certain areas.
9. TITLE: Can You Survive Storm Chasing?
AUTHOR: Elizabeth Raum
SUMMARY: This book is about making decisions if you were caught in a
massive storm situation. Talks about Tornados, Hurricanes, and flash
floods and which dilemma you would rather be in. It gives the reader
options and scenarios. It is both fiction and non fiction and includes
facts about natural disasters and provides an educational background
about them.

TITLE: Natural Disasters
AUTHOR: Claire Watts and Trevor Day
SUMMARY: A big book filled with facts and timelines about many
natural disasters including hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes,
volcanos, avalanches, landslides, tornados, floods. Shows pictures of
before and after. Thought to be for 3rd and 4th grade.
NOTE: These books are all pretty factual, too the point and similar. I
would probably use one of them that covers all the disasters to cover
the entire unit. Then I would give students the option of which disaster
intrigues them the most, take a vote and pick one of the books from
the series I survive to be read.
