SEPTEMBER SEMESTER 2016

HPEI7013 INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
ASSIGNMENT 2

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this assignment is to provide you the opportunity to experience the process
of systemic instructional design using a suitable instructional design model for developing,
and evaluating instructional materials based on a selected design.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Based on the design documents prepared in Assignment 1, you will need to develop the
instructional materials, and implement its use with a group of learners. Report on the
development, implementation and evaluation of the instructional materials and provide
evidence of the necessary steps in the Assignment below.
ASSIGNMENT 2 :
Development and Evaluation of Instructional Materials
Thinking Skills in a student occur when the student appreciates diverse
views, is able to think critically and be innovative, has problem solving
initiative, and an entrepreneurial mindset. (Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015
- 2025 (Higher Education).
Problem solving is an important skill which needs to be developed among students to
inculcate the culture of thinking. This is because problem solving involves transferring skills
learnt to different situations while learners are engaged in cognitive activities (Jonassen
2013). Jonassen (2013) claims that problem solving ensures meaningful learning and should
be accompanied by the processes of analogising, modeling, reasoning causally and arguing.
Your task as an instructional designer is to design suitable problem tasks to address the
problem of lack of thinking skills and problem situations for learning for your students.
As an instructional designer, you have been asked to develop instructional materials to
address this problem in a particular subject area or course. Based on the design documents
you have developed in Assignment 1, provide details on the development and evaluation of
the instructional materials. You will need to utilize the instructional materials developed with
a small group of target participants or learners.

HPEI7013/ASS2/SEPT2016/LA

a) Develop the instructional material based on the instructional strategy in the design
documents in Assignment 1. In your report, please include the following:
i.

Description of the instructional material and the environment / context in

which it will be used. Elaborate on the learning principles and graphic design
principles you have used to ensure the quality of the materials developed.

ii.

An Instructors or Users Guide with instructions on the suggested use of the

instructional materials.
(15 marks)

b) Design an evaluation to determine the suitability and for improving the design of your
instructional material. Rationalise the design of your evaluation.
(10 marks)
c) Implement the use of the instructional material you have developed with a group of
participants or learners.
Report on the implementation of the instructional material and include the following:
i.

Rationale on the choice of the participants and the number of participants in

the implementation.

ii.

Procedure of implementation / use of the instructional material.

iii.

Details on the implementation / use of the instructional material by the group

of participants and data which has been collected.

iv.

Analysis of the data collected.

(15 marks)

d) Report on the findings of the implementation. Discuss the findings and suggest
further improvements to the design.
(10 marks)
(TOTAL: 50 MARKS)
Assignment Format:
a.
The assignment should contain about 3000 5000 words (15 20 pages).
b.
Provide reference using the American Psychological Association (APA) format.
c.
References should be latest (year 2005 onwards).
Notes:
Assignments should be submitted according to the due date.
You are to submit a softcopy of your assignment online through myINSPIRE and a
hardcopy to your facilitator.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. If you are not sure what is meant by plagiarism, refer to
the various websites which discuss this matter, e.g. owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts.
