Serenbe Farms Apprentice Application Questions

I am currently a student at Kennesaw State University majoring in Integrative Studies. My degree has allowed me
to combine curriculum from several disciplines, including Geography and Culinary Sustainability & Hospitality, all
with a central focus on food, globalization, and sustainability. My main focus of study is to try an understanding the
processes that drive our food and natural systems from production and consumption through disposal and how to
make these linear processes and systems more cyclical and sustainable.
Aside from school I enjoy gardening and everything that entails, permaculture, reading, traveling, working,
history, current issues, building with scavenged wood, basically love to learn about anything & everything; I'm also
quite knowledgeable about brewing and the craft beer industry. I take serious pride my work ethic, I am very proud
of the respect and reputation I have earned at my current job through hard work, leading by example, being
respectful, motivating and a personable person, manager and employee. Usually quiet at first but always moving,
focused and working hard. Incredibly helpful, intuitive and efficient; great at following direction or taking the lead. I
am easy to talk to, work with, approachable and accept feedback well.
Long term goals are to graduate, hopefully peace corps, then settle down, farm and be a responsible steward of
the land. I want to work on a farm now because in order to achieve my long term goals hands on experience, training
and knowledge are a must. I need experience working at a real sustainable operation in order to observe and practice
skills needed to succeed in the future. I have wanted to farm for seven years now and my ideas and concepts of what
farming is has evolved over time but the motives have always been the same; "a desire to enrich the quality of life," of
myself, others, and the environment around us all.
This past summer I took a two week design course in Wales and received my Permaculture Design Certificate.
I've also had a garden on and off for six years, but have just recently started to experiment with sustainable practices
in the past two. This past year I grew everything from seed and have began to collect and save my own seeds, but
mainly just experimenting on my own and watching how things grow and interact. I have read all of the literature,
now it is time to gain real world experience. I hope that after this apprenticeship I will have gained the confidence
through hands on experience to take what I have learned and apply it and share that knowledge with others.
"Everything from seed to sale."
Schedule and Availability: I can start ASAP. I live in Canton, GA with my parents, and commute to school twice
a week from 8-9:15AM on Monday and Wednesday, school is about 1 hour from Serenbe Farms; and I also work 30+
hours a week. But given acceptance into the Apprenticeship a two week notice at my job will suffice and should not
interfere with a start time. I have also already financially committed to a 24 day study abroad in Japan and Korea
from May 15th till June 9th. I hope that this will not affect any decision on account that this Apprenticeship is a
perfect fit and great opportunity. I really desire to be considered for the March-December program despite this 24
day absence. Other than 8-9:15am MW and May 15- June 9, my availability and flexibility are open, whatever they
need to be.
Sincerely,
Seth Hoover
