Chemistry
WATER

Many facts about the water and how is used in daily life are part of this text. But first here will be
a brief explanation of what water is.
Water is one of the most abundant and important liquids on our planet, Earth. It is made of three
atoms, meaning, a molecule water: Two hydrogen atoms (H) and one oxygen (O) atom. Or
together: H2O.

Water can take three different forms:

Solid water Ice is an example of solid water, the molecules move away and this
makes ice less dense, so the ice will float in water.

Liquid water This is the one that everybody knows, it has a specific characteristic:
it is wet.

Gas water Gas or vapour is everywhere. It is almost impossible to see it.

For our daily life, we use water almost all the time, from washing dishes to wash cars, at the
beginning it might sound weird but nowadays we actually can wash cars without using water, or
at least without using the same amount of water to wash cars.

But even if this method of saving water is very popular, it is not popular enough to make a real
difference in the numbers of the water we can use. This means, on Earth, the 71% of the world,
is water but only about 3.5% is potable water. And with people throwing away waste in clean
water, this numbers will lower. Of course, there are many ways of cleaning the water. But its not
that easy, unless a new and a more efficient way became created. Dirty water and how we can
prevent it is one of the main topics of this text. But to get until there, some points have to be
covered.

Chemistry

To know some of the ways to recover and reuse water, first we have to know how water get to
our home, so with that We will know the complete cycle of water, besides the hydrological one.

How water get to our homes? is something that you probably had never asked yourself but it is
interesting as well as other trending topics. And here is the answer, in most of the cities or
towns there are a public water-supply systems, or other way of providing water is using water
department pumps. But for any of these processes there are 13 steps that have to be realized to
make potable water, and they are:
1. The water is collected from rivers and lakes.
2. Water is conduced to water treatment plants.
3. Clay is separated by a coagulant.
4. Water continues its way.
5. Then, it remains a few hours until particles decant.
6. The water continues its way.
7. By filters turbidity is eliminated.
8. Water continues its way.
9. Chlorine is added so with that bacteries are eliminated.
10.Water continues its way.
11.Caustic lime is added to water to clean acidity and make it useful for humans.
12.Water continues its way.
13.And the last step is when water arrives to our homes.
