Borough kicks off holiday season

Haddonfield football
coach Frank DeLano
receives award
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield Memorial High
School football coach Frank DeLano has achieved many awards
for his work within the school district.
For all he has done, DeLano
was to receive the Haddonfield
Alumni
Societys
Lifetime
Achievement Award as a teacher
and coach on Saturday, Nov. 26.
The ceremony was to be held at
the high school library.
I was really happy to hear that
I was nominated for this award.
Hearing the (name) Lifetime
Achievement Award, I was
shocked, as Im 40. But I feel very
lucky and very blessed, DeLano
said. I am honored that someone
thought I made a difference in
their life. They probably had just
as big of an impact on my life as I
did on them.
The HAS has been honoring
many of Haddonfields graduates
and teachers for 12 years. Locals
are asked to nominate individuals they feel should be recognized
for their achievements. Nominees
must be graduates of either the

Haddonfield Foundation
hosts dine and donate on Dec. 7
Fifteen percent of bill will benefit local nonprofit
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Haddonfield Foundation, a
charitable organization dedicated
to improving Haddonfield, invites
the community to a Dine & Donate event with P.J. Whelihan's, at
700 N. Haddon Ave., on Wednesday, Dec. 7 between 5 and 10 p.m.
When you order your meal, dining in or taking out, just say you
would like to benefit the Haddonfield Foundation, and 15 percent
of your food and non-alcoholic
beverage purchase will go to the
foundation.
This is a fun, social way to
help keep the community as wonderful as it is now, Haddonfield
Foundation
board
member
Joseph Murphy said.
The Dine & Donate event is a
first for the Haddonfield Foundation.
Foundation
trustee
Kim
LaMaina Banos knew about P.J.
Whelihans doing such fundraisers and arranged one for the foundation.

This is the worlds easiest way

to donate, Murphy said. (The
Haddonfield Foundation) has really helped to bring about things
that are wonderful and unique
about this town, and, after all,
everyone has to eat.
The Haddonfield Foundations
mission is to foster charitable giving for public purposes within the
borough and among its citizenry
to promote, maintain and enhance the communitys quality of
life.
I like that (the foundation) is
only dedicated to serving Haddonfield. I think this is a way to
help make Haddonfield even
greater, and having an opportunity to contribute to your town is a
great thing, Banos said.
Since 1983, with support from
the community, the Haddonfield
Foundation has provided vital
early seed money to more than
100 local grassroots organizations
and projects. Last year, the foundation gave $22,700 in grants to
eight local nonprofits. Those include: the Haddonfield Pick Up

Commission/First Night 2016; the
Historical Society of Haddonfield; the Haddonfield Memorial
High School PTA; the Haddonfield Community Calendar; the
Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture
Trust; and the Markeim Art Center.
There is a long list of things
that the foundation has helped to
fund. It has been involved in all of
the cool things in Haddonfield
and those that add to the quality
of life, Murphy said.
The grants are made possible
through the generous charitable
gifts from town residents to the
foundation. Every year, a mailer
is sent to residents asking for donations.
We always need money for
things. There are so many good
ideas and so many things wed
like to help with and it is great
when we can help them, but we
want to help them 10 times more
if we can, Murphy said.

Slow down out there

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free $100 bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other motorists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its getting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jersey drivers arent the worst in the nation, at least according to an annual

study recently released by CarInsuranceComparison.com. Well, were almost the worst we rank 45th on this
list of the nations worst drivers.
If were not the worst, wed hate to
be on the road in Minnesota, whose
drivers were collectively ranked as the
worst in the nation.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its

worth repeating: Slow down out there!

Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive erratically ... every time you drive! Its just
not possible that your wife is giving
birth for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. Our ready, willing and able are
out on the roads, trying to get shopping
done. And its going to be extra crowded like this for a few more weeks.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the most maniacal in the country.

letter to the editor

Why not call borough tree
a Christmas tree?
I read Brigit Bauma's column in the recent issue of The Sun with great disappointment. The article used the word "holiday" eight times, but the word "Christmas"

not once.
Is the borough really going to offend
someone by calling the borough tree a
Christmas Tree rather than a "Holiday"
tree?
Something that really offends us is
watching American protesters burn the
American flag. But this is OK and within

their constitutional rights despite its offensive nature, yet the borough is reluctant to
use the words "Christmas tree" for the annual lighting because the borough fears
someone will be offended.
Politically correct, you bet. Politically
ridiculous, to an obvious degree.

Handicap parking, loading zone

ordinance could be amended
Commissioners approve ordinance on first reading
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield
commissioners
approved an ordinance on first
reading at the Tuesday, Nov. 22
meeting that adds handicap parking spots and one loading zone.
What we did is add on handicap parking spaces located on
Haddon Avenue at the library, as
well as keep the one that was on
Springfield Terrace. So this is
now the first reading, and there
will be a public hearing at our
next meeting, Commissioner
Neal Rochford said.
The amendment includes the
addition of a parking spot at
North Haddon Avenue, located at
the west side beginning 425 feet
south of Euclid Avenue.
From a previous ordinance
passed in October, two handicap
parking spots for the North Haddon Avenue parking lot are also
being added. At that meeting,
Rochford said the handicap parking spots are already there, but for
the borough to enforce them, they
need to be put in an ordinance.
The loading zone would be located at 321 Springfield Terrace
on the north side, starting 235 feet
in an easterly direction from the
intersection of Springfield Terrace and Potter Street along the

Rochford said a family living
on Springfield Terrace has a child
with special needs, and they have
been having trouble getting their
child to and from the bus.
We made it a loading zone, so
that area wont allow vehicles to
park in front of it, and it will
make it easier for the child to

and

again,
Rochford said.
The loading zone allows for 15
minutes of stopping for loading
or unloading purposes, but no
parking.
Next month, there is one commissioners meeting planned on
Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Borough

Hall, at which the public hearing

and second reading will be held.
In other news:
Commissioners gave proclamations in honor of World War II
Veterans Remembrance Month
and the 85th anniversary of the
Elizabeth Haddon Society of the
National Society of the Children
of the American Revolution.
Commissioners also approved
event permit applications for the
Creche Dedication at Library

Lighting Ceremony. The Creche
Dedication, from the Citizens for
a Christian Christmas, will be on
Sunday, Dec. 11, and the Menorah

WinterFest returns to
Cooper River Park
By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash
The winter chill
is in the air and our
thoughts turn to hot
chocolate, starry
nights and ice skating. The Freeholder
Board has brought
the WinterFest Ice
Skating Rink back
to Cooper River
Park to provide
family fun now
through February 14.
The 60 foot by 120 foot ice rink
is located in the center of Cooper
River Parks Jack Curtis Stadium
located at 5300 North Park Drive in
Pennsauken. Last year, more than
40,000 visitors visited the park for
WinterFest. We invite you to make
it part of your familys winter tradition.
The ice rink is just the beginning
of what you will find when you visit
WinterFest this season. The park has
been transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights in the
trees, and vendors selling soft pretzels, hot chocolate and other tasty
treats. There are also horse-drawn
carriage rides, a carousel and a ferris wheel.
The Winterfest Ice Skating Rink
at Cooper River Park will be open
Monday through Thursday from 5
p.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday from 5 p.m.
to 10 p.m., on Saturday from noon to
10 p.m., and on Sunday from noon
to 9 p.m.

will be admitted onto the ice for free.
There is a $4 admission fee for kids
5 to 12. Admission for adults is $6
and a $4 skate rental fee for all ages.
In addition, there is plenty of free
parking in lots to either side of the
stadium. Visit www.skatewinterfest.
com for information on skating lessons and more.

Beginning December
1, the WinterFest Fantasy on Ice will bring
an experience like no
other to Cooper River
Park. World-class performers will present the
magic of winter in five
free ice shows each
week: Thursday at 7
p.m., Friday at 7 p.m.,
Saturday at 3 p.m. and
7 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.
This is another great reason to visit
one of Camden Countys signature
parks. Bring the entire family to
Cooper River Park for WinterFest.
This is the perfect opportunity to
introduce kids to skating, and who
knows - there might be some future
figure skaters or hockey players out
there.
Spanning more than 340-acres
across four municipalities, Cooper
River Park is Camden Countys
gathering spot. The park contains
multiple picnic areas where friends
and families can gather; a 3.7 mile
loop utilized by walkers, runners
and bikers every day; and, the largest childrens playground in any of
the county parks. The Cooper Rivers Olympic-distance, 2,000 meter
straightaway is widely known as
one of the best rowing venues in the
country, home to numerous worldclass regattas and the Cooper River
Boathouse.

high school or one of its public
schools, or a teacher, if he or she
has taught for at least seven
years.
Delano has certainly distinguished himself, helping the
HMHS football team achieve
many great wins since being
hired as head coach in 2002. The
team has won three South Jersey
Group II championships in the
past five seasons, and Delano
recorded his 100th career win last
season. Before DeLano was hired
as head coach, winning was not a
regular occurrence for the Bulldawgs. The team had only made
two playoff appearances and won
one playoff game in the previous
15 years.
Now he has Haddonfield finetuned into one of the top teams in

the area.
Delano has been recognized in
other ways for his hard work on
the field, achieving New Jersey
State Coach of the Year in 2010
and being inducted into the South
Jersey Football Coaches Hall of
Fame in 2015.
However, he isnt just a positive
influence on the football field, he
is one in the classroom as well. As
Haddonfield Middle School science and math teacher, DeLano
has stressed hard work, ethics,
dedication, being the best you can
and respecting your parents. DeLano employs those same traits
on the football field.
He leads by example, and his
enthusiasm is infectious. He instills a strong work ethic, self-respect and respect for others, selfconfidence and a drive to be your
best, the HAS press release said
of DeLano.
At the end of the day, coaching
is teaching, trying to get the best

DeLano said.
DeLano humbly said he could
not achieve all he has without the
communitys help. He said it is
the Haddonfield staff, teachers,
parents, coaches and kids who
also helped to get him to where he
is. DeLano preaches team first
and mantras of together we
will and Haddonfield football

important to work together and
make a positive impact on the
community.
It is not about me I couldnt
do this alone. Its the kids, teachers, coaches and parents all working together, DeLano said.
Looking at those in the past

DeLano said he was proud to be
associated with such individuals
who have made lasting impressions. He hopes he has done the
same.
DeLano is a graduate of

NOV. 30-DEC. 6, 2016 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 15

National Adoption Day

celebrated in county
For 13 years, the Freeholder
Board and Camden County Surrogates Court have been connecting appreciative children with
loving families as part of National Adoption Day. This year, adoptions were finalized for more than
20 families and 26 children.
Camden County Surrogate
Michelle Gentek-Mayer talked
about the process and how vital it
is for matching children and parents throughout Camden County.
What could be more important than matching a child with
loving parents inside a stable
home? Gentek-Mayer said. It is
my distinct honor to participate
and bring together adoptive parents, the surrogates court staff,
adoption professionals, judges
and attorneys to celebrate and
honor the families who are finalizing their adoptions.
The surrogates court and the
Freeholder Board mark the yearly occasion by hosting a full day
of adoption support and awareness activities. The day brings together adoptive parents, the surrogates court staff, adoption professionals, judges and attorneys.
The impact of this day is
meaningful, knowing that more
than 100,000 kids on a daily basis
are in the foster care system waiting to be adopted, Gentek-Mayer
said.
Camden is consistently among
the counties in New Jersey that finalize the highest number of
adoptions per year. These adoptions represent the full spectrum
of cases facilitated by the surrogates court throughout the year,

including domestic and international adoptions as well as adoptions facilitated through private
agencies and the Department of
Children and Families.
The Camden County Surrogates Court also finalizes the
largest number of international,
or Hague Adoption Convention,
cases in the state each year. The
Hague Adoption Convention established international standards
of practices for inter-country
adoptions that have been followed
in the United States since 2008.
On this day every year, we celebrate these beautiful children
getting their forever family and
work to ensure we can continue
getting kids out of the foster care
system and into a permanent
place to live with loving parents,
Gentek-Mayer said. This annual
event has made the dreams of
thousands of children across our
country come true by finalizing
the creation of adoptive families
and moving children from foster
care to their new homes.
Recent figures indicate that
more than 2 percent of all U.S.
children are adopted and that
about 60 percent of Americans
know someone who has been
adopted or has adopted. Informational expos and programs such
as those hosted by the Camden
County Surrogates Court are instrumental in placing children in
a stable home.
Adoption Day is a national initiative to raise awareness of the
more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.
