Asslamulaikum,
Ihavearrangedfewrulesofprecis,heretheyare.
Followingaretherulesofpreciswriting.
1)Readthegivenpassagecarefullyatleastthreetimesinordertobeabletograspwhat
thewriterhassaid.
2)Underlinetheimportantpointstobeincludedinyourprecis.Apointisimportantifitis
intimatelyconnectedwiththemainsubjectandifitisessentialforaclearexpositionof
thetheme.
3)Useyourownlanguageintheprecis.Whilewordsandphrasesfromtheoriginalmaybe
usedintheprecis.Wholesentencesshouldneverbeliftedoutoftheoriginaltobe
includedinit.
4)Theprecisshouldberoughlyonethirdoftheoriginalpassage.Alwayspreparearough
draftfirstandcountthewords.Ifyoufindthatitistoolong,shortenitbyremovingwhat
seemsenessentialandbycondensing,phraseology.Ifitturnsouttobetooshort,readthe

originaltoseewhatmorecanaddedtotheprecis.
5)Examples,illustrations,andcomparisonsshouldbeleftoutoftheprecis.Figuresof
speechshouldberemovedandtheideasexpressedinclear,directlanguage.

anyopinion,favourableorunfavourable,abouttheideasintheoriginalpassage.
7)Beverycarefulaboutthelanguageyouwrite.MistakesofGrammarandspellingare
penalizedasmuchintheprecisasinotherformsofcomposition.
8)SeethatyourprecisisareadablepieceofEnglishandthatitsideascanbeunderstood
evenbyapersonwhohasnotgonethroughoriginal.Thisisveryimportant.
9)Yourprecisshouldbeconnectedwhole.Assuchitshouldnotbedividedinto
paragraphs.(THISRULEDOESNOTAPPLYTOVERYLONGORIGINALPIECESOFWRITING
SUCHASTHOSESETINCOMPETITIVEEXAMINATIONS).
10)Don'tusethedirectformofspeechinprecis.Iftheauthorhaswritteninthefirst
personpronounusing"I"and"my",youshouldwriteinthethirdpersonpronoun:"he"and
"his".Theprecismay,insuchcasesbeginthus:"Theauthorsays.........."orAccordingto
theauthor....."Incaseofnameoftheauthor,ChestertonorJohnsonorMacaulay,isgiven
attheendofthepassage,theprecisshouldbeginthus:"AccordingtoJohnson,....."or
AccordingtoAdil....."orZiaexpressestheview.........."
11)Thinkofasuitabletitlefortheprecis.Thetitleshouldordinarilynotbeacomplete
sentence.Atitlemustbesuppliedeventhoughifmaynothavebeenaskedfor.
12)Indicatethenumberofwordsinyourprecisattheend.
