Biblical Insight

Who is the old self Paul wrote about in Romans 6:6?

And who is the old self he said we have to take off in
Colossians 3:9? The answer is found in Romans 5:1221.
Here Paul outlined the history of salvation by focusing our
attention on two men whose deeds were to influence the destiny of all mankindAdam and Jesus Christ. The first man,
Adam, was disobedient and passed on the
consequences of his rebellion to all his
descendants. As the father of the human race,
Adam brought sin and death upon all men
(Romans 5:12). Paul then explained that
Adam was a pattern of the one to come,
Jesus Christ (v. 14). Through His obedience,

old man and a young man. Focus not only on the physical, but also on the
of a new humanity redeemed from the curse
mental, social, and spiritual aspects of both.
brought upon them by their first parent.
The contrast is clear. Adam is the old man,
OLD MAN
YOUNG MAN
and Christ is the new man. Those who are
saved are in Christ, while those outside of
Christ are said to be in Adam (1 Corinthians
15:22). Therefore, to put off the old man
entails leaving behind our old life of sin and
all we were in Adam. Conversely, to put on
the new man is to put on Christ, His character,
attributes, and all that pertains to Him. It is
essential to put off the old man and put on the
new, for as in Adam all [will] die, so in
Christ all will be made alive (1 Corinthians
15:22).

Discussion
The Greek word for baptize, baptizo (Romans 6:3), means to dip or
immerse. With this in mind, read Romans 6:114 and explain how water
baptism portrays the union of the believer with Christ in His death and resurrection, and how it symbolizes putting off the old man.

Paul wrote of some who mistakenly concluded that because salvation is by grace and
not by works, they could go on sinning so
that grace may increase (Romans 6:1). Read
Romans 6:14 and Titus 2:11. Explain what
grace enables us to do, and how living in sin
contradicts salvation by grace. How do you,
personally, respond to Gods grace?

SPIRIT CHALLENGE ANSWERS

Lesson 18
A: N/A
C: Answers will vary.
D: Just as Christ died, was buried, and rose again, the believer is buried under the water in baptism, and is raised out of the water symbolizing Christs resurrection. And just as Christ
died and was raised in resurrection power, the believer leaves his old life behind and rises to
walk in newness of life.
E: Grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and yes to Him. Grace gives us the ability to live
holy lives consecrated to Him.
