Self-Introduction
My name is Abbye Lopez and I am currently going to Arizona State University. I
am in the process of getting my bachelors degree. I am a junior studying to become a
Secondary Education History teacher. This is my first semester being a part of the Mary
Lou Fulton Teachers College and I plan to graduate in May 2018.
There are several different reasons why I decided to become a teacher. I wanted a
career that had me impacting the lives of children. I wanted to make a difference in
students lives just like my previous teachers have done for me. While in school, children
are at a fragile state and they need someone in their lives who can educate and inspire
without judgment or ridicule. That is why teaching is important to me. Not just to share
my knowledge and love for history but to also change at least one students life one way
or another.
Based on the research of Madeline Hunter, Dr. Fred Jones and Dr. Harry Wong,
my belief is that all students are different and deserve for their differences not to hinder
their education. The quote that best explains my philosophy dealing with a diverse
student base is Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a
tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. Said by Albert Einstein. Every
student comes with their own background and their own strengths and weaknesses when
it comes to education. It is my job as their educator to acknowledge their strengths in
order to improve their weaknesses. It is my job to provide my students with the
accommodations they need regardless of their backgrounds or learning disabilities. Like
my favorite quote, there are no stupid students, just ones that are incorrectly judged.
Room Arrangement
They way I designed my classroom was based off the work of Dr. Fred Jones. I did this
because it is the most efficient way to get around my classroom without any trouble. It
allows me to be able to get to any student at any time with just a few steps. This I so that I
have a movement of pattern called the Interior Loop. My classroom has many
walkways and my desks are arranged in a formation that requires the least amount of

movement for when the students are asked to get in pairs. I set up my classroom in a
manner that is the most beneficial for my students and me as the teacher.
Teachers Desk: I have placed the teachers desk in the top right hand corner of the room. I
did this because it is out of the way of students and leaves more open space for the front
of my classroom. I put it diagonal in the corner so that when I am sitting at my desk I am
able to see every student when I look up.
Materials Cabinet: I put my materials cabinet in the back right corner of my classroom. I
placed it there because it is out of the way of traffic that comes through my room and also
because it is convenient for the students if they need to get into it.
Bookshelf: The bookshelf is also in the back right corner of my room. This is because
when students need to get their textbook it is placed in an area that will have the least
amount of build up of students. It is also far enough away that when not being used it
doesnt cause any distraction or blocking any student.
Homework Station: The homework station is place at the left back corner of the room. I
placed it there because it is located right next to the door. Students will be able to grab
any papers or materials they will need for todays class as they walk in through the door.
The students will also be turning in their homework on this table as they are coming into
the class.
Teachers Locked Cabinet: This is located right behind the teachers desk. I placed it
there because this way no student has access to it and it is in my eyesight at all times no
matter where I am standing in the room.
Filing Cabinets: These cabinets are also located behind the teachers desk. This is because
I will be keeping my notes, homework, and tests in these cabinets and I dont want any
students to have access to them.

White Boards: My white board is located in the middle left side of the room. I have it
placed in this location so that it is always visible for my students. I will be writing the
weekly schedule and the objective on this board.
Student Desks: My student desks are located in the center of the room and arm length
away from the smart board. They are all individual seats with chairs that are not attached.
This way it can accommodate to any student. They are set up in rows/line but are also in
groups of four. I did this for two reasons. One is so that it gives me space to easily walk
around the room and be able to get close to every student. Two is because it makes it fast
and easy for the students to get in groups of 2 or 4. There are 7 seats in the back that are
not in the pods of 4 and these are for my students that are a little too chatty and because it
makes it easier for the ones in the back of the classroom to see.
Mounted Projector: The projector is located in the center of my room. This is because I
will be using it every day and it needed to be in a place where every students has full
visibility of what I am presenting at all times.
Trashcans: I have two trashcans. There is one trashcan is located by my desk for when I
will need to throw things away and the second is located in the back of the classroom
right next to the door so that the students are able to through trash away as they are
walking in or out the door.
Bulletin Board: There are two bulletin boards in my classroom. There is one by the white
board that will contain all of the items that deal will school spirit, announcements and
rules while the one located by my desk will contain classroom assignments, rules and
student work.
Computer Stations: There is only going to be one computer in my classroom and it will
be the one I am using. It is located on my desk and it is there because I do not want the
students to be able to get onto it quickly or ever.

Smart Board: My smart board is located at the front center of my room. I will be using
this for every day use as well as the morning announcements. It is placed in the center
because each student will need to have full capability of seeing it. I also put it hear
because while I walk around the room I will have a full visual of it as well.

Procedures
Providing a set of procedures in a classroom is one of the most important steps in having
good classroom management. The procedures that I will have in my classroom are all
based on my research of Dr. Harry Wong and Dr. Fred Jones. These two men have given
my great ideas on how to have the best classroom management. It is my job as the teacher
to come up with all aspect of the classroom that will help my students education.

Beginning of Class:
I will be meeting my students at the door to welcome them into the room. They will be
handing me any homework/projects that are due on that day. I do this so right then and
there I will be able to see who turned in the assignment and who did not. As they walk
into the classroom there will be a table right next to the door where they will grab any
necessary materials they will need for todays lesson. After grabbing their materials the
students will sit in their assignment seat and pull out their notebooks to begin on their bell
work that will be already posted on the smart board.
Ending Class:
The last 7 minutes of class will be saved for the students to do their closure for the lesson.
I will ask them to put away all of their supplies expect for a piece of paper and a pencil,
this way they dont waste any time packing up their backpacks. After they have nothing
out but a pencil and paper I will give them the closure. They will turn it in to me and then
be asked to pick up any trash around their desk. The students will remain in their seats
until I dismiss them and as they walk out the door they can throw away the trash that they
have picked up.
Transition Between Activities:
During my class when I am giving assignments or putting them into groups, I will be
using a timer. This is so that the students will know how much time they will have to do
the task. This makes them have fun with it and students will always try to beat the time.
When the time is up the students will be taught to then stop whatever they are doing and
to look at me for further instruction. I will also be using the auditory signal of pencils
down, eyes up so that I can get the attention of my students quickly.
Managing Student Work:
Collecting Homework- In order to collect homework I will be standing in the door way
and the students will have to turn it in before entering the classroom. This way there is no
time wasted in class with them trying to find it in their backpack or copying it from their
friend. I can also quickly see who did or did not do their assignment and be able to
address them right then.
Handing Back Work- My students will be sitting in alphabetical order so that after
entering assignments into the grade book I can pile them in the same order and distribute

them that way. I will give them out individually and face down as I walk around the
classroom and while they are working on their bell work, closure, or in class assignments.
I want to hand them out individually because I do not want any students trying to look at
their peers grades.
Handing Out Materials for the Lesson- I mentioned this in how I will begin my class as
well. There will be a table located by the door that has the supplies laid out for the
students. They will be taught to grab whatever is on that table as they walk through the
door.
Student Absences:
When a student is absent they will be taught that there is a bin located on the homework
table. In this bin it has a tab for every day of the week. The student will just have to go to
the days that they were absent and grab whatever papers are placed in those tabs. This
way he/she doesnt waste any of the class time trying to ask my what they missed and me
having to go locate the papers. They will also have as many days as they were absent to
complete the work that they missed.
Late Work:
I will not be accepting late work in my classroom. The only thing that I will do for them
is to let them know they have till the end of the school day to turn it in if they do not have
it done by the time they come to class.
Grading and Recording Student Work:
I will be grading homework/in class assignments within 1 or 2 days of them turning it in.
If I assigned an essay to my class then I will most likely take a week to grade and return
to the students. I will be recording them into the grade book as I finish grading all classes.
I will not enter one classs grades without finishing grading each class. This way one
class doesnt get their grades before the others. I will make sure to enter grades as I go
and before I hand the assignments back to the students. This is the best way in order to
give my students the good feedback that they need to succeed.
Communicating with Parents:
In order to communicate with parents I will be providing my email on the syllabus and
letting them know they can email me at any time. I will also be setting up conferences
with parents who would like to meet with me and discuss their child. I will always return

an email or phone call within 24 hours. I will be calling home not only if a child is
disrupting my class but for good news as well. It is important that parents dont only hear
the negative things their child is doing but also the positive impact their child might have
in the class/school.
Consideration of Divers Learners:
As a teacher it is my responsibility to take in consideration all the types of learners that
will be in my classroom. In consideration of them my procedures will be taught and then
re-taught when forgotten. I will not ask anything unreasonable of something my students
will not be capable of. I will follow all IEPs and 504s. There will be no consequences of
the procedures are not followed, they will just be re informed of them.
Rules and Consequences
In my classroom there will be five rules posted that my students will be asked to
follow. These five rules will be clearly stated, specific, and using only positive words.
Based off my research from Dr. Harry Wong, Fred Jones, and Richard Lavoie I know that
my rules and consequences will have to be taught (not told) the first week of class. The
rules will be reasonable and all IEPs and 504s will be followed. The consequences for
not obeying the rules will follow due process. I will be consistent and I will also be
documenting them using classroom violation form.
Rules:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Cellphone usage is for outside of the classroom only.

Remain in your assigned seats at all times unless instructed otherwise.
There will be only one person speaking at a time
Hands, feet and other body parts are kept to yourself.
Only appropriate language will be used inside the classroom.

Consequences:
First Offense- Warning/Conference
Second Offense- Call Home
Third Offense- Detention
Fourth Offense- Administrative Referral
*Teacher reserves the right to skip steps based on the severity of the violation*

Summary
In conclusion, my classroom management plan allows me to best control my classroom
while also sticking to my philosophy as a teacher. My plan fits every student individually
and not just as a group. It allows them to be different while also being in a safe and
beneficial learning environment. With my plan the students will be coming to class
prepared and knowing exactly what is expected of them. This will make them more
comfortable in my classroom and will allow me to teach them content while also
establishing a positive relationship with each and every one of my students.
