Interview your mentoring teacher to obtain the demographics about the school. Write a response
to each question in a paragraph format.
1. Record the number of males, females, and ratio of ethnicity within the classroom.
While observing Mr. Ihle and the other classes that he assigned me to, I noticed that there
were impressive results in the data. In all classes, there were slightly more boys than
girls. Concerning ethnicity, each class was relatively the same with African Americans
tending to make up five to ten percent of the class, Hispanic's twenty to thirty percent of
the class, Asians zero to 5 percent and whites filling up the most in each class. There was
one exception with the freshman class that I observed, in that it had more Hispanics than
any other ethnicity at 70 percent of the class.
2. What are the development levels of the students within the classroom you are observing?
I observed multiple grade levels during my service learning, grades that included the
ninth tenth and eleventh grade. For the ninth grade class, everyone was at normal level,
the same goes for tenth grade and eleventh-grade classes. In the tenth grade class, there
were a few students who did better than the rest, but this is just the exceptional students
that can be found in any class. The only class that may be slightly below par is the
eleventh-grade class as there was low participation among them.
3. How is the instruction modified to meet the diverse needs of the students?
There are no particular needs of the students in the classrooms that I observed. All of the
teachers used some form of digital medium to help engage the students due to those
students being used to digital sources. Every teacher except one played a video of some

kind to help further grab the attention of students. The teacher that did not play a video
had a greater focus on disciplining the students in the ninth grade.
4. Research the school and the Tennessee State Government website to obtain information
about the school community, school report card, and school population.
The school of Morristown East has a population of 1407 students with a nearly even ratio
of female to males with females at 47%. The ethnicity of the student body is as follows
with significant variables at 1% Asian, 4% black, 15% Hispanic, and White at 78%.
Concerning economics, the school is able to receive Title I funding with 59% of students
economically disadvantaged. Through multiple classes, I learned a large number of
students have jobs to support their families. So this is relative to the students that are
economically disadvantaged. This data is from around 2015 the most recent data for
attendance rate comes from information 2012 and before, with an average of 95%
attendance rate. For math, the school received a grade of a C and for English a grade of
an F.
5. What are the specialized programs/activates found within the school that would assist
special needs children, those who need enrichment activities, or remediation?
Many teachers offer tutoring services for those that struggle within their classroom. There
is also an ACT prep class for those that want to have a chance at a better score. Across
from the school, there is a building that hosts afterschool activities that some students
need. There is a big special education program for the school that hosts Special
Olympics. If there is a alternative school for the East High, there was not any information
to be found about it. The school also has a separate freshman academy to help focus on
those beginning in the earlier years.
