Curriculum standard: Oral Communication
Oral Communication (One Year/ 1 Credit) The two-semester Oral Communication course
will provide students with an understanding of the dynamics of effective communication
when speaking, listening, and responding. Students will express ideas and present
information in a variety of communication tasks including small group discussion,
democratic decision-making, formal and informal presentations, oral interpretation of
literature, and argumentation. Students will develop basic communication competencies
including ethical practices in communication; recognition of communication barriers; and
effective use of interpersonal communication, listening, verbal and nonverbal messages,
and use of digital media. Emphasis will be placed on research skills as students prepare
for formal presentations and argumentation. The two-semester course of Oral
Communication fulfills the unit of Oral Communication required for graduation and
does not require Arkansas Department of Education approval.

How I Will Use It: I will use this video to teach my class in a silly fun
way that everyone has fears of public speaking. I will proceed after the
video for everyone to write down 2 things that scare them about public
speaking. After the students do this I will put them into groups of three
and ask them to share their fears with one another. I will then ask the
students to come up with a silly song or rap about all of their public
speaking fears, and perform in in front of the class. I believe that this
exercise will help the students to feel more comfortable around one
another and not be as nervous to give their future speeches.

How I Will Use It: I chose this funny video to teach the students about
gestures. I will also use it to show some of the dos and donts while
giving a speech. For example though it was a little much he had a good
opened with his gestures and drew the audience from the beginning.
As Dwight continues his speech I will continue to talk about how his
speech may not be very good, but his crazy gestures make what hes
saying appeal more to the audience. I believe this video will grab the
students attention because its a show that a lot of them probably
watch, and will allow me to teach something in a more exciting way. It
will overall teach the students something about gestures and how to
use them appropriately.
