Seungjun Kim 2
Introduction
My name is Seungjun Kim, and Im majoring in secondary mathematics education in
ASU. I was born and raised in Bucheon, Korea, which means that Im an international student.
After graduating from Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, I decided to study in ASU.
Currently, Im working as an intern in Challenger Middle School. The multicultural experiences
sometimes make me confused, but I try to take them as my gift.
I decided to become a teacher because of the simple reasons. Like the other education
majoring students, I met a lot of good teachers. I was bullied for a long time. When I was feeling
sad, the teachers listened to me and helped me to recover from the bad memories. Their behavior
and language habits became the characteristics of the ideal adult in my head. Nowadays, Im
trying to be the ideal adult when I teach the students. However, they didnt give me a motivation
in fact. Instead, the bad teachers around the world motivated me to have such a dream. I
remember a teacher who ignored me when I was bullied. I was a friend of her son until she
became our homeroom teacher, but I couldnt play with him since then. My mother started to
study in college when I was her student, and she belittled my mother as well as I remember. Now
I know she wanted to save her son from bullying, but I still dont forgive her. With anger and
respect, I entered ASU. 2 years later, I went back to Korea to finish my military duty. After I was
discharged, I got a chance to work in a Korean middle school as an assistant teacher. In the
middle school, I felt like I have a superpower which makes people to like me for no reason. The
students followed me well, and they even cheered me up when I was anxious or frustrated.
Besides, because I didnt really have a certain job, I helped both math-science and language
department. The teachers allowed me to interrupt them whenever, so I started to follow an 8th
grade math teacher. The teacher even allowed me to teach the students, so I could get confidence.
After the final exam period, I even got a chance to review the 8th and 9th grade tests. By having
such wonderful experience in Korea, my anger turned to the hope. Also, I started to admire the
students as well. I saw the students planning their future with vivid processes and purposes. They
were just unlike me.
According to Madeline Hunters research, a teacher with diverse cultural experiences
handles the students better than the ones without the experiences. Such result makes me relieved,
and I see a reason why such strength occurs on the teachers like me. Although Im not an
understanding person, I know what hurts the culturally diverse childrens feeling. As Harry Wong

Seungjun Kim 3
mentioned, the misunderstandings cause the gap among the cultures. About the students with
learning disability, because Fred Jones and Richard Lavoie said that the teachers need to provide
the different learning methods for the students with learning disability, I will do my best to
prepare anything for the students, so the students will succeed the goal with equally high
outcome.
Room Arrangement and Rationale

According to the article of Fred Jones, the teacher should consider mobility and
proximity to manage the classroom. Although the two concepts seem to be distinct, they in fact
are correlated. By designing my own classroom, I wanted to provide the students the
environment that they can concentrate on the class without being distracted.
Because I wanted to teach my students in the middle of the classroom, I decided to place
a white smartboard on the center of the front wall. By connecting the board and any smart pad, I
can write anything I want on the board at anywhere because the board projects whats on my
smart pad. As mentioned, I want to teach the students in the middle of the room by using such
technology. As far as I know, many smartboards can be used as a whiteboard as well, so I dont
really want to put an additional whiteboard in the room. About the bulletin board, I want to place
it next to the smartboard, so the students dont have to move around to check the announcements
or the assignments. The height of the bulletin board should be same as the whiteboard, but the

Seungjun Kim 4
width should be less than or equal to the height. On the bulletin board, I want to write the
assignments, announcements, my contact information, and a summary of each days lesson.
Although Im going to tell the students to write my contact info on the first page of their notes, I
think I should keep the information on the board. About the summary, when the students come in
to the class, they can read it and understand what they are going to study. The ceiling mounted
projector is needed when the students need to watch a video. However, because the projector
sometimes causes the color or brightness issue, Im going to place a television at the front corner
of the classroom as well. I want to put 8 large student desks for 32 students. As shown on the
image, they are rectangular, and the students can share the spaces with the student in a
wheelchair. The desks are placed to form a V shape because of the reason I mentioned. Although
I learned that such arrangement causes the physical distance between the students and the teacher
during TEL 311 class, I still think I can handle them more easily by staying in the students area.
A small trashcan is under each desk, so the students can throw the eraser dust and the other
landfill trashes in it. About the recycle bin, because some student throws them in to the bin, it
will be next to my desk. I hope that no one throws a trash to me. Because I have to take charge of
the materials, the material cabinets and the teachers locked cabinet are next to the teacher desk
as well. A bookshelf, a computer, and a homework station are on my desk, and the filing cabinet
is under my desk.
Procedure
According to Dr. Harry Wongs quote, if the teachers prepare properly, beginning of the
class becomes a useful time for themselves and the students. For example, if the teachers check
the attendance as the student enters, they can have more time to concentrate on their lectures
without making the distraction. Also, at that time, the teachers can give the graded homework as
well. Therefore, I decided to use the beginning time to grab the students concentration, and
make them ready for the class. Because the teachers usually get in to school before the students
come, they have more time to prepare. During that time, I want to write the summary and
important vocabularies of the days lesson. I expect the students to read the summary before
beginning the class. During the time, the students can take their items out, and hand the
assignments to their teacher. However, I saw many students who lost the track while they were
preparing for themselves when the teacher started to teach. Because of that fact, I want to
provide the students enough time and minimize the course materials for the students. In order to

Seungjun Kim 5
achieve the goal, I will distribute them the daily materials like the assignment sheets for
worksheets on their desks. After the process, then I will start teaching based on the lesson plan.
At the end of the class, I want to provide the students a group quiz as a closure. Although
the students can work on it as a group, they should turn them in individually as they leave. The
quiz should be easy, so the students can write the problem solving process on a sheet of notecard.
The homework will be collected during that time as well. If I collect it before or during the class,
then there must be at least one student who distracts everyone by finding his or her assignments.
Besides, if a student didnt get the assignment because of the absence or the other reasons, the
teachers should have a backup plan for them. Because everyone has the excuse, I dont want to
punish them for not doing homework. Instead, Im going to let them work on and turn in the
assignments until the end of the class. I know some of the students is possibly going to cheat, so
Im going to group them and make them to seat a round table next to my desk. That way, I dont
have to worry about the cheating or the interruption. Also, the students in the group will stay
quiet until they finish the assignment because they wont have a time for chatting. To grab their
attention to the lesson, I will use the timer and auditory signals.
About the due date, I know it is a controversial topic, but Im the one who support the
idea that due date causes the negative effects to the students that Dr. Fred Jones suggested.
Therefore, I want to provide the students 3 different due dates for each assignments, and the
students can turn in their assignments on any of the dates. If a student chooses the first due date,
then the person can resubmit the assignment to get the additional points. If the corrected answers
are right on the second trial, then the student can get 75% of the original points. For the third
time, he or she can get half of the original. However, the points wont be reduced if a student
submit ones assignment on the second or third due date for the first time. Similarly, if a student
submits the assignment on the third due date for the second time, he or she can get 75%
additional points. Of course, some student possibly tries to cheat. Therefore, I will change the
numbers on the questions when the certain due date is passed. For example, if a student tries to
submit or resubmit an assignment on the second or third due date, the student should solve or
redo the problems with the second- or third-due-date numbers. The changes of the numbers will
be announced. Because I have to provide the time for the students to redo the problems, I will
grade the assignments on the day I got them. The grades will be recorded after the third due date.

Seungjun Kim 6
If the school provides its own laws about being late or absent, then I should follow them.
However, if not, as I mentioned, I dont want to punish the absent students. However, the
students will write the reasons. If the reason is based on ones laziness, then I should turn the
record in to the students office. Other than that, I wont judge judge them by their attendance. If
needed, I will call their parents and settle the problem. Of course, other than such reason, I will
have to contact the parents of the students. Because I wanted to help the students after school as
well, I will provide my e-mail address and phone number to my students. I hope the parents also
contact me as well when they need.
Dr. Richard Lavoie and many other people support that the educators should consider
about the diverse learners. For the ELLs, I will provide some picture of certain problem. For the
students with learning disability, I will contact them after class by using video call until they
understand the knowledge. For the diverse learners, I will extend the third deadline to the end of
the semester.
Rules and Consequences
The rules and the consequences will be posted above the whiteboard, so I or the students
will read them whenever it is needed. Because the rules are difficult to memorize, I want to
provide my students the time to recite them. Each student will say one rule or consequence, and I
will give them a candy or chocolate if the answer is right. Of course, I know some student might
not participate, I will make the order of the students who are going to state the rules. Therefore,
every student is going to memorize the rules and the consequences.
Rules

The students and the teacher use respectful language and behavior to each other.
The students can talk during the class if the teacher permitted.
The students can move from their seats if the teacher permitted.
The students can use electric devices if the teacher permitted.
The students can eat food or drink water if the teacher permitted.

Because Im not experienced that much yet, I just decided to write the rules that I
recently think are important. For the first rule, I chose the word respectful because I think it
sounds specific enough, and describes the atmosphere I want to keep in my classroom. I know
the respect causes and prevents relationship-based problems, so I want to teach my students how
to be respectful to each other. By learning how to respect the others, the students hopefully
respect the diverse learners. Other than the first one, I wrote the activities which I need to permit

Seungjun Kim 7
the students to do. According to Dr. Richard Lavoies video, the teacher should have the
authority to keep the classroom. Therefore, I decided to add the phrase about the teachers
permission. If a student asks the permission to do improper things, the teacher can refuse the
request according to the first rule.

**Teacher reserves the right to skip steps based upon the severity of the situation.
Although I want to give the students more chances than this, to avoid the possible
inequality and dissatisfaction among the students, I should provide them proper and equal
punishments according to Dr. Harry Wongs research. However, still, because I dont want to hurt
the students, I am going to provide them the merits if they keep the rules well. For example, the
students will anonymously report the good behaviors of the other students, and I will check if the
report is true. If it is, then I will give them some point to lower the level of the consequences.
Other than the report, I can give the merits if they help me to prepare for or teach the lesson.
Therefore, such process can be used to manage the students behavior. Because no one wants to
get punished, the students will try hard to remove their consequences.
Summary
By writing this paper, I got a lot of help from the professor and the doctors I mentioned.
By refreshing my memories and thoughts, I could motivate myself. As mentioned on the
Introduction, I decided to be a teacher because of the unqualified teachers and the wonderful
students who would be suffered by them. Therefore, I am not going to let the students fail or fall
in my classroom. I hope this paper guides me when Im lost.
