Student Activities & Procedures

1. Kahoot Pre-assessment (Pre-Assessment should be done a week before this

unit is taught)
2. Today we will learn what Natural Disasters and Blizzards are what dangerous
Blizzards have occurred in history.
3. Students will make their own Survival Kit. Survival Kits can be made from a
shoe box or a stapled folder. Inform students of this a week in advance so that
they can bring the necessary materials from home. Allow students 5-10
minutes to design and decorate their Natural Disasters Survival Kit.
4. A natural disaster is a natural event that causes great damages or loss of life.
Most natural disasters are caused by weather. Some of these natural disasters
are blizzards, hurricanes, tornados, volcanos and earthquakes. There isnt any
way to avoid natural disasters, but if people know what kinds of disasters are
most likely where they live, they can learn what to do if a disaster happens to
stay safe.
5. Go over the Choice Assignment to the students. Students will be put in groups
to work make one of the following projects. Options for the choice assignment
are making a Prezi, a brochure, or a news broadcast. Each group will be
assigned a different Natural Disaster. Do research with your group to find out
important details about your assigned disaster. Students will present their
information and project to the rest of the class. (Talk about the choice
assignment during Language Arts time.)
6. Students will assess themselves to make sure the rules of the choice
assignment are clear and understood. Assessment will be done by students
placing a 1-4 in the air. 4 meaning they understand the project. 1 meaning they
do not understand and they need help.
7. Students will create a K-W-L chart for Blizzards. ESOL STRATEGY #50: For
content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as;
strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role playing activities,
cloze strategy, etc.
8. Allow students 5 minutes to fill out the K and W portion of their chart.
9. Have students sit on the circle carpet (This will be done during Language Arts
time).
10. Teacher will read aloud the book Blizzard by John Rocco to the class. The
book will have appropriate discussion when necessary. For students with
reading exceptionalities, allow them to listen to the YouTube read aloud video
of the book. (This book will be read during Language Arts time) UDL
Modifications: I.1.2. Offer alternatives for auditory information.
11. As the book is being read, additional information will be added to the L
(learned) section of the KWL chart.
12. Teacher will hand out a Blizzards packet to each student.
13. Teacher and students will go over pages 1-5 together in class. For ESOL and
ELL students, allow them to work with a partner when needed to complete the
course packet. ESOL STRATEGY #2: Promote cooperation (small groups).
Allow 20-25 minutes for lesson and completion of the packet. If more time is
needed, students may take home the packet to read at home.
14. Have students take home the packet and complete pages 6-9 as homework.
15. What is a snowflake? Show pictures of snowflakes to the students. Have
students point out specific details they notice about snowflakes. (2-5 minutes)
16. Show video Where do snowflakes come from?
https://safeshare.tv/x/ss583cdcfb2e882
17. Did you know that while no two snowflakes are the same and they are all sixsided?
18. Students will make their own snowflakes. Teacher will make a snowflake
along with the students to give a visual of all the steps. ESOL STRATEGY #8:

Resources/Materials

Use direct instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the

strategy and show how to use it. Allow 15-25 minutes for students to make
their snowflake.
Step 1: Students will be given a square piece of paper. Color may be chosen by
the students.
Step 2: Have the students fold in half diagonally.
Step 3: Fold the paper in half again.
Step 4: Fold one third of the paper.
Step 5: Fold in half again.
Step 6: Cut the top off at an angle.
Step 7: Design/cut your snowflake to your liking.
