Lesson 5: Welcome Families Find a Parent Who

Materials:
Sign-in sheet
English/Spanish Find a Parent Who worksheets
Pencils
Post event questionnaires/surveys

Objective:
Parent-to-parent communication to allow parents to meet other families within the
class. Parents build lasting relationships with one another for support and
collaboration throughout the year.

Procedure:

Print the Parent Sign-in Sheet and have it ready for parents when they arrive
(these can be found in the Additional Resources section on pages 107-108).
Print Parent Exit Surveys for the end of the event. These can be found in the
Additional Resources section on page 109.
Prepare this lesson for use in the classroom as a welcome gathering for parents
at the beginning of the school year. This can be an afternoon or evening event
depending on the needs of the teacher/families.
Print/Copy enough Find a Parent Who worksheets in English and Spanish.
Place a Find a Parent Who worksheet on each student desk.

Procedure Continued:

Once the parents have completed the Get to Know Me Scavenger Hunt from
Lesson 4, direct parents to their childs desk.
Parents will get the Find a Parent Who worksheet.
Explain to parents that the activity is for parent-to-parent communication.
Model with a volunteer how to complete this activity:
o Direct parents to circulate the room and introduce themselves to one
another. They find another parent who can answer a question or
statement on the Find a Parent Who worksheet.
o When they find a parent who is a match to a question or statement, they
write the corresponding parents name on the line.
o This activity is provided so parents can take the worksheet home. Parents
should be encouraged to make notes and exchange contact information.
o Resource for Spanish: https://translate.google.com/
At the end of the event, ask the parents to complete the exit
questionnaire/survey.

Assessment:
Maintain a record of the sign-in sheet from this event.
Review the parent event questionnaire/survey and reflect on how the evening went.
Make notes of what went well and what can be modified for future use.

lasting relationships with families.
