SYNOPSIS

Road to Taoudenni

This is a film documentary film based on a journey of young poor man Baba Molana who has
lost his beloved, Batoul. Being lonely and desperate, he meets up with a sheikh in Erg Lihoudi in
Zagora, a respectable man who has great influence in the world of trade and commerce. Sheikh
suggests to Baba Molana to accompany him to Taouadenni where he will buy rocky salt and gold.
Baba Molana accepts Sheikhs offer. From a sedentary life to a moving one and in the next
day, the caravan heads for some dangerous places in Sahara where they encounter silence, hunger
and fear, The caravans main chief Sheikh, desires to head for Agadez through the mountain of El
Haggar; Erg Sheikh; a center town of Toureg and Africans and then to Timbuktu where Baba Molana
learns the craft of dealing with salt market.
Tuareg life is specific and moving and they cant stay in one place. They suggest to Baba
Molana to choose one girl and gets settled with them but he does not accept the offer because he
feels that he is learning a lot in this world of trade especially the commerce of rocky salt which
eventually costs too much money like gold. When arrived to Timbuktu, a mysterious intellectual place
in the past ; a town of mixed race , a mecca genre of all traders , Baba meets and important men,
he sees a new world of mystery and trade . Then along with Sheikh; they depart to Taoudeeni,
specifically to the salt mines where Baba Molana becomes very rich.

The Sultan of Morocco and Sahara
If China is linked with the Arab world through the commerce of silk, known as the silk road, Morocco is linked to Africa
through Sahara known as Rio del Oro or The road of Salt,. The Sherifian Empire spearheaded by the Sadian ruler of Morocco, Moulay
Ahmed Ben Al Mansoor knew about this trade and its quality that is to say; salt equal gold .He reigned Timbuktu, Telemsan and
Taoudenni. And he traded with Soudan, Mali and Senegal .The starting point was Fes and sometimes Tafilalt through Zagora to
Timbuktu and finally to Taoudenni. The salt of Taoudenni is the best salt in the world and has fed families and built towns like the
famous town found in Erg Sheikh already made of salt.
Through this invitation to the legendary journey, the viewer will be left to the discovery of the most beautiful oasis of
Tafilalt, Timbuktu and Taoudenni. It will be here to see and understand how Sijilmassa and its people are committed every day to
reclaim their natural heritage and optimize resources.
The documentary will give a wide meaning of Sahara. Anybody who has visited it, it creates within him an immense thirst
to revisit it again. Sahara is a big word, a heavy word that hits the ear with harshness. Imagination translates its act as: thirst, privation,
incertitude, fear, in the center of an immense sand empty of help .Sahara can have its smiles too, its hours of charm and fly its poverty
under a coat of soft herb. Sahara is covered with imagery of millions of camels heading to nowhere.
Its beauty lies not in the poor architecture of its houses, but in the contrast between the smallness of this human group
and immensity surrounding it on all sides without even find an end to these misty horizons of steam. In Sahara, it is the same life, secret
and sweet, the life of the rising water of its wells to the inexhaustible thirst of beasts and caravans.

The Story of Baba Molana
In Erg Lihoudi, a golden dune in south eastern Sahara of Morocco, there lives a young poor boy who is in love with Batoul, a
beautiful girl in this district of Zagora. Their love has become a legend especially that it is said that Baba Molana wants to test Batouls
love. He invites her to a nice sandy place where the moon is seen like the giant cyclope. When she sits next to him, he takes out his
flesh and digs it hardly in the sand, but to his surprise the flesh hurts badly his beloved in the lower part of her leg. Yet she does not
utter one word .Then, Baba Molana is certain that Batoul loves him dearly and passionately. The same thing happens to the mind of
Batoul, she invites him too to her tent in order to test his love. What she does is beyond believe. She puts hot fire in the sand and
covers it with a tissue and invites Baba Molana to sit in that place where there is fire. Yet, Baba Molana sits without showing any

reactions. He talks to her as he does when seeing her every day. Batoul becomes certain herself of his love and their engagement
become so strong than ever.
Erg lihoudi, a small village, becomes famous of this legendary story whose protagonists are Batoul and Baba Molana. Their
story becomes popular in Sahara, known as the BB story, or Baba Molana and Batoul story.
Unfortunately, a tragic event is happened. Batoul dies out of a stroke. Baba Molana just cannot believe what has happened
to his beloved.
All villagers of Erg Lihoudi are sad about this event and they sympathize with him. Baba Molana gets sick and just cannot get out to see
the world again.
Baba Molana has lost all his family and is completely alone. The chiefs of Erg Lihoudi comes to comfort him but it was in
vain. Baba Molana stays alone in an immense dune stick to the face of a giant moon at night. Erg lihoudi is situated in Lamhamid El
Ghizlan, right in the south of Zagora, near to the border of Algeria. It is known of its rocky roads and golden dunes. Caravans of trade
are used to pass by bringing salt and gold from near African countries.

Sheikh the mentor
As Baba Molana contemplates silent night of Sahara where stars shine like gold. A caravan comes from the south passing
by Erg lihoudi, headed by an honorable sheikh who has seen Baba Molana sitting alone. Sheikh orders his caravan to stop for a pause.
When Sheilh comes to sit next him, he does not speak but contemplates and shares the beauty of stars that seem to fall on that golden
dune where both sit .Sheikh points to a larger star and says .These stars are my guide to richness and wealth .They lead me to the
south, to the north everywhere; I mean the Saharan place where I get rich; to Barabiche, to Toureg tribes, to Agadez; to Erg Sheikh and
finally to my beloved place; Taoudenni.
The word Taoudenni tickles the ear of Baba Molana. He smiles to sheikh and opens his heart to him .And it is the first time
he speaks to a man after the death of his beloved one. Yes, I know Taoudenni is a secret place, it is the place of buying and selling salt.
Its salt is the best quality in the world. Tomorrow, I am going to Tafilat and when I come back you meet me here. You may come with
me; I mean to work with me. You will discover a magic world of gold; money and of salt. People come from all parts of Sahara to trade
and you will see it is a new world of glory and also sufferance.
My caravan is protected by the tribe of Barabiche but sometimes we are attacked by other smugglers. The road of salt is
dangerous and yet it is passionate.

As I said the road is dangerous with the tribe of Tuareg but it is sweet to have this journey with me. So, after two days,
you meet me here in Erg lihoudi. You are welcome to see a new world of silence, of commerce especially of beauty.

The Journey
People of Erg Lihoudi are so happy to see Baba Molana coming back to his senses. They see in him a man of enthusiasm
and eagerness. They did not see the sad poor boy of the past , but they see a changed man ; a new man that only Baba Molana knows
the secret ,yet people of Erg Lihoudi knows that Sahara is mystery and secretive and the only thing that they are sure of is that they
will never see Baba Molana again.
After two long days of wait, there appears majestically the caravan of Sheikh, the mentor of Baba Molana. Sheikh invites
him to join the caravan and they go surely right in the deep going through windy sand that vanish them in other harsh dunes of Algerian
borders .Sheikh says to Baba Molana that from the south, we used to trade goods like tobacco, rise, and maize in order to bring them
to the north dealing with leather of ostriches, leather, swords and camels .we sell it to the souks of Ghate, Touate and Merzak. The
colonists, also know the secret of this trade, they were good about these goods but usually they were besieged by Toureg who take
control of these caravans and sometimes they trade with them without stealing or snatching their trades.
This area is governed by Toureg who has captured my caravan one time. I tried to be more tradeful more diplomat but they
insist on capturing me and my men. I know why, because in that year there is drought in Sahara and the wells are empty, They were
so hungry and they did not have anything to feed their children .When I was captured, I had to wear Amama, a turbulent and blue
melahfa and I rode Meharri camels which are, by the way, the best camels in the world . There are many kinds of Toureg, those Algerian,
Lybian, Mali and Niger ones But the Algerian ones are very famous of sticking to Sahara because of the large space they live in. I live
also with Mali Toureg who have varied culture than those of Algerian ones.

The visit of Tuareg of Al Hakkar
Sheikh along with Baba Molana already guided by a Nigerian Tuareg, heads for Agadez, formerly spelled Agades, is the
largest city in central Niger, with a population of 118,244 It lies in the Sahara and is the capital of Ar, one of the traditional Toureg
Berber federations. . They march onto hot dunes and are attacked by fierce Toureg. After one week of March, Sheikh orders the
Nigerian guide to spend night on the part where Toureg of Algeria meet. They call them El Hakkar people named by the famous
mountain Al Hakkar.

Toureg invites Sheikh with his people including Baba Molana who seems astonished to see for the first time this blue man.
They wear blue Melhafa, with Amama, turbulent but they cover their faces unlike women who uncover their faces. Toureg people
respect two major things in their life; women and tents including camels. They drink too much milk and ride Meharri camels .Some
Tuareg tribes in the south are governed by a Sultan and speak both Arabic, Tamachkant and sometimes they speak Amazigh.
Surely, as Baba Molana gets near some men talking to Sheikh, he hears salt and gold. Salt of Taoudenni is repeated too
many times before his ears and the journey is still long and after tomorrow the caravan should head to Berabiche and then later on to
Agadez. Sheikh surely wants to trade there and then go back to Taoudenni for salt.
The community of Tuareg relies on camels and travel .They cannot stay in one place for a long time because they look for
water. As a community, it relies on two important men who are essential for the survival of tribes. The first one is the well digger.
Without him, they cannot find water .The Second one is the iron man. He is in charge to make swords and knives. Apparebtly, Tuareg
people are war people and they rely on robery and stealing especially when there is no rain or when water is rare.
Baba Molana gets mixed with riders who teach him how to dress their camels. One of the remarkable thing is that Toureg
man can communicate with his camel because this latter knows when the man wants to ride him .Besides, the camel obey the man
and it can even go on foot. Tuareg can march miles and miles without showing any sign of tiresome. Sometimes he drinks hot blood
from camel to resist the march and the harsh wind .He also feels the existence of water about 25 meters far from his place.

From Agadez to Berabiche
In Agadez, Baba Molana learns to rade and make himself deal with others as far as commerce is concerned. Usually at
nights, he makes a walk to see the moon and on his way back, his remembrance goes to his beloved one, Batoul when he sees a mother
making her daughter hair in order to prepare her for her coming husband. Toureg women should make themselves beautiful when
their husbands come back from outside to tents. Baba Molana surmounts his melancholy and sadness because he is certainly making
a beautiful journey with Sheikh, although roads of trade are dangerous. There is also political conflict going on in this area .Yet, Baba
Molana does not care because he is learning the craft quickly to be a good dealer.
The Guide is from Ansar al-Dine, a place from Berabiche. Sheikh has paid to the tribe to protect his caravan from robbery
and at the same time, he trades with them gold and Taoudenni, that means salt. For the first time, Baba Molana sees huge parts of salt
being carried out into the sides of camels heading to Egypt, Akdez in Lybia and Algeria.
The majority of Ansar al-Dine fighters are Toureg from Iyad Ag Ghalis Ifoghas tribe and Berabiche Arabs from the Timbuktu
area. Ansar al-Dine avoids fights with the MNLA and FLNA (National Front for the Liberation of Azawad) so as not to shed blood of
relatives and tribal cohorts which would be de-legitimizing.

This is an Arab group loosely allied to the MNLA which wants the people of northern Mali to have the right to selfdetermination. They want northern Malians to be able to decide whether they want to be autonomous, independent or to be a part
of Mali, possibly through a referendum similar to what happened when Southern Sudan voted for independence. The FLNA is not
asking for the implementation of Sharia law.

Ganda Koy
Ganda Koy (Masters of the Earth) is a Songhai ethnic self-protection militia which has been around since the second Toureg
rebellion in the 1990s. Ganda Koy has in the past fought alongside the Malian Army against Tuareg rebels. They have allegedly
committed massacres against Toureg civilians.
Human Rights Watch recently put out a report warning that ethnic self-protection militias like Ganda Koy and Ganda Izo are
compiling kill lists of members of MNLA, Ansar al-Dine, other groups and their collaborators. One can assume that many of the names
on these lists are of Tuaregs and Arabs.
Ganda Izo
Ganda Izo is a Fulani ethnic militia that was formed in 2008 to perform a similar function to Ganda Koy - providing selfprotection to the local Fulani populace and countering Toureg rebellion. Ganda Izo has now expanded to include more than just the
Fulani ethnic group. They have training camps in Mopti.

Timbuktu the route that linked sub-Saharan Africa to North Africa and Arabia
The visit to Agadez was excellent to Baba Molana because he sees different races new cultures and political conflicts .Yet,
what interest Baba Molana is only trade and commerce. Now, in a modest tent, there sits some older men from Agadez. They are
Toureg but they are so nice to Baba Molana and even they invite him to choose a woman for marriage in order to live with them. Yet,
Baba knows that this is not his place and he hears them talking about Timbuktu the route that linked sub-Saharan Africa to North
African and Arabia.

Baba Molana becomes as enthusiastic as he knows that the caravan will depart next say to Timbuktu. No name brings
ancient Africa to mind more than Timbuktu, a great city that flourished on a bend in the Niger River for more than four hundred
years. Gold, ivory and kola nuts passed through Timbuktu, but the most important commodity was salt. Timbuktu was located near
several salt mines in Sahara. Caravans hauled salt from the mines to trade for gold.
Although the city of Timbuktu was established in the 12th century and became an important commercial center, it only
gained widespread prominence as an intellectual capital in the 15th century. Chroniclers mention that the city has its roots in a
nomadic summer camp set up a few miles from the river Niger, as a base from which they could pasture and water their camels
during the period of intense heat. This position proved strategic for commerce and soon attracted many settlers. The settlement was
important not only because of its location at the junction of the dry Sahara and the lush central valley of the river Niger, but because
the river itself constituted an easy pathway for transporting goods to and from the more tropical regions of West Africa. Thus
merchants settled there early on and were subsequently followed by Muslim scholars much later, after the establishment of a
permanent community.

Baba Molana in Taoudenni
Baba Molana learns fast to deal with this new world. Timbuktu is the ideal place for him to get improved. His mentor, Sheikh
admires his fast learning and gives him to lead the caravan to the mines of salt where is Taoudenni lies graciously .Only few miles,
about 14 days by riding camels. For Saharan people, this distance is nothing. The next day, Baba Molana takes the lead to Taoudenni.
He feels that he becomes someone, a man of exquisite trade in sub-Saharan Africa to North Africa and Arabia. Timbuktu was the
magical key and Taoudenni is fortune.
In Taoudenni lies salt works. From air views, they should not be distinguished from the village nor does the current residential
salt mine. The paths that climb the houses end network in uncertain paths traced by the barefoot through hard clods of mud or fresh
and slippery pits.
In its primitive pit, measuring about 8 meters wide, Baba Molana looks at miners and owners and their companions,
innumerable caravan, traders and retailers not only in Sudan, but in Upper Volta in Guinea, Dahomey, and Ivory side even in the English
colonies. This land talks salt and who has patience, has fortune and certainly new fate is designed for Baba Molana because he has
been patient and passionate.
At the end of operation, these pits were 7 meters deep. Their vertical sides clearly show, from top to bottom, the successive
layers of red clay, green mud, gypsum and impure salt for the use of cattle. A 5m.50, appears El Beidat, white, the first four layers of
salt gem of 15 to 20 centimeters of muddy clay separate from each other.

El Kamera, is a floor of 0 m.20 a thin layer of clay protects the brackish water table. Its extraction is delicate. Before
undertaking it, and if the condition of the terrain permits, minor open and operate side galleries, non-forest, which do not exceed 6
meters in length.

Baba Molana becomes a myth in Sahara
Once the first layer of rock salt is exposed, the chief draws the bars to be cut and the neighboring teams come to help, to
charge the other hand, to extract these bars before water seepage had time for the damage. The bars are extracted immediately rows
side by side, vertically so they drip overnight.
After the miners and their volunteer helpers divided them into two, a pickaxe, in the thickness direction, it only remains to

The finished bar weighs 25 to 40 kilograms and is worth .50 7GB or 10 dollars. That one comes to break during labor, debris

charge of dealing with traders because apparently Sheikh trusts his style .He begins to work with the owners of camels to take big
pieces of salt. Sheikh observes him from distance. Surely, now that fortune has smiled to Baba Molana, he really becomes one of the
famous rich trader in sub-Saharan district. Echoes of his wealth has reached further tribes of all Saharan tribes especially Erg lihoudi
whose people are proud of their wounded boy of love called Baba Bolana.

Dear Sir/Madame,
I learned many things that taught me how to see the world in a distinct way. Ranking among good producers affected me a
lot through enhancing my desire to enhance the development stage of my project called ( Road to Taoudenni ) on the international
level, as well as for improving my skill as to find funding institutions world wild .,
I am Hicham Brini, an exigent, persistent, determined and devoted to my work, Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I am
submitting my application for The Eurodocs 2017. Through my experience upon working in too many film documentaries, movies,
exercising several cultural activities and traveling abroad, my horizons expanded as well as my cultural background. I learned how to
interact with professionals and I gained several practical skills as well as the cognitive ones, as you can see from my Curriculum Vitae.
This stimulated me to pursue my goals through specializing in the production field.
Eurodocs is surely an outstanding gate to expand my horizons; it will enable me to broaden my knowledge by undertaking
set of contexts, theories and approaches regarding the program offered. Not to mention the fact that I will be acquainted with the
most prominent tutors who will mark my professional life.
