Project #3:
GET TO THE POINT
Executive Summary:
Every speech must have a general and a specific purpose. A general purpose is to inform,
to persuade, to entertain or to inspire. A specific purpose is what you want the audience
to do after listening to your speech. Once you have established your general and specific
purposes, youll find it easy to organize your speech. Youll also have more confidence,
which makes you more convincing, enthusiastic and sincere. Of course, the better
organized the speech is, the more likely it is to achieve your purpose.
Objectives:
Select a speech topic and determine its general and specific purposes.
Organize the speech in a manner that best achieves those purposes.
Ensure the beginning; body and conclusion reinforce the purposes.
Project sincerity and conviction and control any nervousness you may feel.
Strive not to use notes.
Time: Five to seven minutes.
Note To The Evaluator:
The speaker is to prepare a speech that has a clear general purpose (to inform,
persuade, entertain or inspire) and a specific purpose. The speech is to be organized in a
manner that best achieves these purposes. The beginning, body and conclusion should all
tie into and reinforce the purposes. The speaker is to project sincerity and conviction and
strive not to use notes. Any nervousness displayed should be minimal. In addition to your
verbal evaluation, please complete the evaluation form below by rating the speech in
each category.
5 = Excellent
4 = Above average for the speakers experience level
3 = Satisfactory
2 = Could improve
1 = Needs attention
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Reduce Your water footprint
What is the average per capita consumption of water in India ?
what is the highest contributor in % is out of this ?
Mr. Toastmaster & fellow members, after hearing my presentation, the audience will
understand what water footprint is & be able to follow 3 simple tips that will help reduce
water footprint at homes.
This is the year 2070.
Now, all the rivers, lakes, dams and underground water beds are either dry or
contaminated.

Nowadays we use towels with mineral oil to clean our skin. Before, women had beautiful
hair. Now, we have to shave our heads to keep them clean without the use of water
The outside appearance of the population is horrible: wrinkled, emaciated bodies, due to
dehydration, full of sores caused by ultra violet radiation, now stronger without the
protective shield of the ozone layer.
The average life expectancy is 35 years
Industry came virtually to a standstill and unemployment reached dramatic proportions.
Government makes us pay for the air we breathe
Water became a very coveted treasure, more precious than gold and diamonds.
We were warned to look after the environment, but nobody cared.
When my son asks me to talk about my youth, I tell him about the green fields,
the beauty of the flowers, the rain, how pleasant was to swim and fish in the rivers and
dams, to drink all the water we could, and how healthy people were. I remember there
were SAVE WATERwarnings on outside posters, radio and TV, but nobody paid
attention. We thought that water was to last forever.
He asks: Daddy! Why there is no water? Then, I feel a lump in my throat! I cannot help
feeling guilty, because I belong to the generation who contributed to the destruction of
the environment or simply did not take into account all the warning signs. ...that we still
had time to save our Planet Earth.
Now our children pay a very high price!
How I would like to go back and make mankind understand
What is a Water Footprint?
The total amount of water used directly and indirectly by a person, business, institution
or country..
In fact, you can use Water Footprint Calculator to find out how what you do in and
around your home affects your water use. Water used indirectly (i.e. water you don't feel
or see) in the production of goods, like food and consumer goods, and services, like
electricity is called virtual water. Virtual water makes up the majority of a water
footprint.
It takes
Bread 1608 lit/kg
Chocolate 17196 lit/kg
Chicken 4325 lit / kg
Milk 255 lit/kg
Coffee 264 lit/250 ml
Tea 54 Lit / 250 ml
Why Do Water Footprints Matter?
The key factor driving the demand for water worldwide is water scarcity, which is
dependent on factors such as population growth, urbanization and industrialization.
Overall water usage in low and middle income countries and their per capita domestic
consumption is expected to increase over a period of time due to the following factors:
Increasing population and urbanization, like in India, where the growth rate of the urban
population is expected to be 2.54%
Changing consumption patterns with the use of more water-intensive products

Rapid industrial growth, with technology moving toward more water-intensive

technologies
Developed and high-income countries are expected to reduce their overall water
consumption across all sectors by 2050 through the following initiatives:
Better water management measures
Reduction in per capita water consumption

What can we do ?
Stop running taps
When you turn on the tap, up to five litres of water flows through every minute. In many
cases, much of this running water isn't doing anything and is wasted. Here's what you
can do:
Wash vegetables and fruit in a bowl, not under the tap - then use the leftover water to
water house plants.
Do NOT leave the tap running when brushing your teeth, shaving or soaping your hands.
If possible use mugs which will reduce water wastage.
2 Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads
Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be fully loaded for optimum water
conservation. Most makers of dishwashing soap recommend not pre-rinsing dishes which
is a big water savings.
With clothes washers, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses an added 20 liters (5
gallons) for the extra rinse. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the
load.
Replace old clothes washers. New Energy Star rated washers use 35 - 50% less water
and 50% less energy per load. If you're in the market for a new clothes washer, consider
buying a water-saving frontload washer.
3. Embrace your dirty Side
Wash your pair of jeans every two weeks instead of every week. You can save 8 days of
clean drinking water for one person.
4. Take shorter showers.
One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower after soaping up, then turn it
back on to rinse. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water.

How many of you would like to be my partner in saving our water footprint?
