Acknowledgement
We would like to express our sincere and deep thanks to Dr TC Bera for
his constant supervision and guidance throughout the project and for
giving necessary advices whenever we needed it. We choose this
moment to acknowledge his contribution gratefully.
Also, regards to technicians at the Mechanical Engineering Workshop
for their valuable comments and knowledge on using machining at
workshop. We have forged the components out of high carbon, heattreated steel and then machined them to required dimension

MFM PROJECT - MULTI UTILITY HAMMER

Objective:
The objective of this project is to make a working model of a proper plier hammer
assembly which consists of a plier with a hammer head and axe head.
Application:
A hammer is a handheld tool used to strike another object. It consists of a handle to which
is attached a heavy head, usually made of metal, with one or more striking surfaces.
This multi utility hammer is different from the rest in terms that it is a multi-utility tool
rather than being a simple hammer. It is a combination of a hammer, an axe and pliers.

Methodology:

We plan to forge the components out of mild steel

and then machine them to required dimensions.

Initially we will take the stock material and cut it to suitable dimensions and forge
it make the arms of the plier. We will be doing Smith forging by first heating the
metal to it recrystallization temperature and then hammering and also using a
pneumatic press.
Then well grind the components to remove the irregularities.
Then we will drill the hole for making the joint.
Then buffing of all the components to get better surface finish.
Welding the components together i.e. Joining the plier teeth on the inside of the
arms, the axe and hammer head on the outside.
Again, grinding will be done to improve surface finish.
Painting of the job.

The joint is basically made by drilling a hole and using a machined bolt and a nut.
Design:

Figure 1 above shows the CAD model of the prototype. The Design includes the plier
arms, axe head, hammer head, plier teeth and a nut bolt joint which allows free
movement of the plier. The force applied on the arms will cause it move around the
joint for plier action. The assembly as a whole can be used as an axe while holding both
arms together and in closed position (of plier). Similarly, for hammer as well.
Material Selection:

Mild steel rods, blocks of steel for hammer and axe, tooth made of steel and paint
Mechanism
The rods are forged into the shape so that they could overlap each other and it makes
the handle of the job. blocks of iron are forged into the shape of hammer and axe and
finally welded to respective handle top and teeth were also welded that formed plier
and the whole assembly was ready to be painted and a screw at the middle of handles.

Tools Used:
1. Clamp
2. Hammer
3. Holding Fork
Working:
Two rods of mild steel of required dimension was cut using automatic hex saw. Grooves
for the plier action were made by hot forging. Forging was done leaving a length equal to
the plier teeth length from the top end. Hammer was made by hot forging a cylinder of
mid steel of required dimension. Similarly, Axe was made by hot forging a mild steel plate

from one side. All the three pieces were then grinded to match the close tolerances.
Hammer and Axe was arc welded to separate legs of plier prepared earlier. Teethes for the
plier was separated made and gas welded to the legs. Both the legs were then grinded and
polished. A hole was drilled through the grooves made earlier. This hole was riveted to
achieve the plier action. The complete component was then painted.

Problems Faced

The plier action was hard to achieve as it required tight dimensional tolerances.
It was hard to choose the right machine tool to make the surfaces of parts to be
welded planar finally did it with grinder. Took some more time.
Hammer was mistakenly welded wrongly so it was cut, grinded and then welded
again. Making plier teeth and tapering them was difficult.

Result:
We were able to manufacture a model. The teeth of the plier were not machined properly
causing some interlocking problems. We were also not able to attach a return mechanism
for the plier with the help of springs, hence calling for an alternate design.

MFM PROJECT - MULTI UTILITY HAMMER

Future Scope:
The scope for this project is reasonably wide as it finds its application in varied variety of
everyday jobs. Combining multiple tools in a single tool makes the work quick and easy.

Conclusion:
We have completed our project. There were many trials we faced while working on the
project. There are very few deviations between the final product and the designed one
owing to the loss of machining accuracy and precision. We feel that our resolve of
checking the viability of the idea for mainstream use is met by the manufactured
prototype. This project has the potential to be developed for real life applications and an
extensive study would ensure its proper usage.
