A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY SENATE URGING THE


UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI TO IMMEDIATELY ACT AS A FORMAL SANCTUARY
FOR UNDOCUMENTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
WHEREAS, the University Creed demands our community have respect for the dignity of each
person;
WHEREAS, the University of Mississippi must protect the rights of all community members;
WHEREAS, the UM campus leadership ought to immediately begin the process of making our
campus a formal sanctuary for undocumented immigrants, their families, and related community
members;
WHEREAS, UM ought to refuse all voluntary information sharing with Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) across all aspects of the
university to the fullest extent possible under the law;
WHEREAS, UM ought to refuse ICE physical access to all land owned or controlled by the
university;
WHEREAS, UM ought to prohibit campus security from inquiring about or recording an
individuals immigration status, enforcing immigration laws, or participating with ICE and/or
CBP in actions;
WHEREAS, UM ought not use E-Verify;
WHEREAS, UM ought to prohibit housing discrimination based on immigration status;

WHEREAS, UM ought to support undocumented and DACA students equal access to in-state
tuition, financial aid, and scholarships, and support the ability of qualified immigrant students to
enroll and sustain their attendance, including by doing everything within its power to use
institutional funds and scholarships to fill any gap created by discriminatory laws that exclude
immigrant students from paying the in-state rate or accessing ordinary financial aid and
scholarships on equal footing with other students;
WHEREAS, UM ought to assign an administrative office with the responsibility of counseling
DACA students on their educational situation, and advertise that DACA student counseling
services are available on a strictly confidential basis;
WHEREAS, UM ought to publicly support the continuation of the DACA program;
WHEREAS, in the event of arrest, imprisonment, and deportation, or due to student reluctance to
travel to or appear on campus, UM ought to have in place arrangements for online continuation
of students degree programs;
WHEREAS, UM ought to commit to ongoing dialogue with the students, their families, and the
UM community about additions to university policy and support for community efforts that
protect immigrants who study, live, and work at the University of Mississippi; AND
WHEREAS, given the urgency of the situation, ASB Senate requests that UM take these steps
immediately, before the President-Elect is sworn into office.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY SENATE
URGES THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI TO IMMEDIATELY ACT AS A FORMAL
SANCTUARY FOR UNDOCUMENTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
