Incorporating any social media platform
into your classroom can seem like a
daunting task. In a world where other
forms of technology are readily available
you may even find yourself asking if its
necessary. The truth is that video tools
like Youtube can open a whole new
world of information to your students.
CO-OWNERSHIP IN THE CLASSROOM
An Education Week article from educator
Brianna Crowley highlights the difference
social media can make in terms of coownership within the classroom. Allowing
students to collaborate on a classroom
video or take turns creating a daily video
log gives them a feeling of co-ownership.
Its a great opportunity to encourage
creativity and communication, but its
also the perfect opportunity to teach
your students about being a responsible
web user.
WEB CITIZENSHIP
Our students are likely going to be active
online both in and out of the classroom.
Teaching through social media allows us
to teach proper netiquette and security.

In the Classroom

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

WHERE CAN I FIND CONTENT?

KNOW YOUR PARAMETERS

No two school districts were created
equal. Most dont allow access to social
media platforms. The beauty of Youtube
is that most schools allow access to
Youtube Education. Youtube Education is
exactly like the original website, but its
filtered for content that may be inappropriate for students.
CREATE AN ACCOUNT
Creating a Youtube channel is simple! It
is now operated by Google which means
you can sign in with your Google email
account. Its best to create a specific
Google email account for your class in
order to do this.
CREATE & GATHER CONTENT
Youtube allows a great deal of freedom
within your classroom. You can create
and upload videos to your account using
a webcam or even your phones camera!
You can also use content from other creators and create playlists of videos for
various assignments, units, or concepts.
INSTRUCT STUDENTS
The best way to create a safe environment for your students is to have each of
them create a Google account. Once
youve walked them through that process
you can give them select access to the
content of the Youtube page youve created. This means that only your students
can see your videos. It also allows them
to communicate with classmates on that
particular video. Videos from other creators will likely have an open comment
section.

YOUTUBE FOR TEACHERS

CRASH COURSE

Author John Greens brother, Hank. There

that can be used within the classroom.

school or university instructors.

HOW CAN I ENHANCE LEARNING?

USE EDPUZZLE
EdPuzzle is an amazing free resource mentioned in Kristen Hicks guide to using
Youtube in the classroom. You can sign up
for an account at https://edpuzzle.com/.
Once you sign up you can use a video youve
already found on youtube, or search by subject on EdPuzzle. After youve selected your
video you can trim it if you only want to show
a certain segment, add voiceovers to better
explain content, and inserting questions for
students to answer. Once completed you can
provide your students with a link to the video.
They can then hear your voiceovers and answer your questions within the module. You
can log in to your EdPuzzle account to track
their progress and see their scores on questions.

HAVE STUDENTS CREATE VIDEO DIARIES

Video diaries can be an excellent resource
within the classrooms. It does require access
to a video recording device, but students can
use phones, tablets, webcams, and other
devices to do this. Students can work together on video projects to add to their channel,
or upload a video diary each week to go over
what theyve learned. You can also have students privately submit their video diaries
which will allow them to be more open and
honest about things they struggle with.
USE IT AS AN EXIT TOOL OR BELL RINGER
You can have students record quick clips at
the beginning or end of class to explain what
they learned that day or reflect on previous
lessons. Its a great way to keep them focused on content during those difficult transition time periods.
