intendthis.Mostotherancientsourcesadvocatedusingthedayformulafordaybirthsandthe
nightformulasfornightandsodidthemedievalastrologers.Andthesepeopleknewwhattodo
withthePartofFortune.
LetmeconcludethisnotebygivingaverybriefdescriptionofwhatthePartofFortuneis.ThePart
ofFortuneisusedtodescribethebasicwayinwhichtheindividualisphysicallyconnectedwith
thesurroundingworld.Itisoneofthesignificatorsofthebodyandhealth,anditistheprimary
significatorofprosperity,andalsocareerasitrelatestoprosperity.Butthemethodofusingitwill
comeasabitofasurprise.ThisisoneofthemostimportantdiscoveriesthatProjectHindsight

InthefirstinstallmentofthisseriesofnotesIdescribedthemethodforcomputingthePartof
Fortuneandsaidabitaboutwhatitmeant,thatitwasthekeytounderstandingthenative's
prosperityandcareer.InthisinstallmentIwillgofurtherintoitssymbolismandsaymoreaboutits
properuseaccordingtotheGreeks.
AsIhavesaid,thePartofFortuneisaprimaryindicatorofprosperity,butitismorethanthat.Itis
createdoutofthelongitudesoftheSun,Moon,andAscendant,andthereforeiscomposedoutof
thethreeofthemostimportantplacesinthechart(onlytheMidheavenoutsideofthesethreeisas
important)andasaresultbecomesasimportantastheyare.Inmodernastrologythereisa
tendencytoregardthePartofFortuneasaminorpointinthechart,butthiswasnotthecasewith
ancientastrology.
InancientastrologytheAscendantistheprimaryindicatorofthephysicalbodyandhealth.The
Moonisalsoaveryimportantsecondaryindicatoraboutthebody.Butthereisadifference
betweenthem.TheAscendantwasconsideredtobethebodyatitsmostphysical,materiallevel.
TheMoonwasthelivingaspectofthebody,infactsoul,butsoulincarnatedinaphysicalbody.

lives.Itscapacitytosignifyprosperitycomesfromthis.IfthePartofFortuneisingoodcondition,
therelationshipbetweenthenativeandthephysicalandsocialworldinwhichheorshelivesis
onethatsupportsthenativeandenablesthenativetolivewell.IfthePartofFortuneisinpoor
condition,thenativehasahardertimelivinginrelationshipwiththeworldthatsupportsthenative.
ThesamecanalsobesaidabouttherelationshipsofthePartofFortuneandhealth.
However,inthecaseofbothsignificationsonemustkeepinmindthatnooneindicationinthe
chart,noteventhePartofFortune,canbetakenbyitselfasatotalindicatorofanyareaoflife.For
healthonemustalsolookattheAscendant,itsruler,theMoonanditsruler.Alsothesixthand

aredebilitated.Squares,oppositions,andconjunctionswithmaleficsarealsonotconsideredtobe
verygood.AsamodernastrologerIwouldhavetosaythatsuchindicationsdonotmeanpoverty
orbadhealthsomuchastheymeanthatthenativewillhavetoworkharderorhasanarrower
rangeofpossibleroutestosuccess.Butgiventhosetwoconsiderations,theresultscanstillbe
verypositive.
Asmyconcludingcommentinthisinstallment,letmesaythatthePartofFortuneisnotmerelya
pointliketheplanetsorthenodes.Itisthestartofahousesystem.ThesignofthePartofFortune
isthefirsthouseoftheFortunasystem,andthefirsthouseoftheFortunasystemextendsfrom0
degreesto30degreesofthesigninwhichthePartislocated.Andeachoftheotherhousesofthe
Fortunasystemalsoextendfrom0degreesto30degreesoftheirrespectivesigns.Inthenext

Whethertheseresultsreallyaregoodforthenativewillonlybecomeclearovertime.Certainly

ThenaturalbeneficsareVenus,Jupiter,theSunbytrineorsextileaspects,andanyplanetthatis
wellaspectedanddignified(seenote).
Malefic
Aplanetwhichdoesnoteasilyproduceresultswhichwouldbeconsidered"good".Generally
speakingmaleficsarenotsomuch"bad"asitisthattheyrequiremorethought,more
consciousness,andmoreskillatmanaginglifethanthebeneficsrequireinmostcases.Infactthe
twomainmalefics,MarsandSaturn,arenecessaryforbuildingcharacterandstrength.Buteither
ofthesehandledwithoutconsciousnessleadstolessthanfortunateresults.Thenaturalmalefics
areMars,SaturnandtheSunbyconjunctiononly.
GeneralCommentaboutBothBeneficsandMalefics
Ultimatelywhetheraplanetisamaleficorabeneficdependsuponanumberoffactors.Planets
thatarenaturallyoneortheothercanbeconvertedintotheiroppositebyothercircumstancesin
thechart.OnecannotassumethatVenusandJupiterwillalwaysproducegoodresults,andthat
SaturnandMarswillalwaysproducebadresults.Thisisaoldclassificationandmustbetaken
somewhatfreely.IntheendIlikePtolemy'sdefinitionofthetermsbest.AccordingtoPtolemy,a
beneficisaplanetwhosenaturalinfluenceleadstomoderationandbalance.Amaleficisaplanet
whosenaturalinfluenceleadstoextremesandimbalance.
DignifiedandDebilitated
Planetsmaybedignified(madestronger)anddebilitated(weakened)inavarietyofways.Inthis
articleImainlyrefertodignityanddebilitybysigns.Planetsaredignifiedwhentheyareinsignsin
whichtheyruleorareexalted.Theyaredebilitatedwhentheyareinsignsoppositethese.Any

IfthePartofFortuneisafirsthousemarker,ournaturaltendencyasmodernWesternastrologers
ismakethedegreeofthePartthecuspofthefirsthouseandtosetupequalhousesfromthePart
usingthePartasanAscendant.However,fromthematerialwehavefoundsofarinProject
Hindsightwhattheancientastrologersactuallydidwasabitdifferent.Andwhattheydidwas
characteristicofhousedivisioninalloftheoldesttextsincluding,wenowknow,Ptolemyhimself.
AsIhavealreadymentioned,thehousesoftheFortunasystemweremeasuredfrom0degreesto
30degreesofthesignthatthePartofFortunewasin.Thispractice,whichhasbeendubbedwhole
signhousedivision,wasnotonlyusedwiththePartofFortune,butalsowiththeAscendantitself!
Theentiremodernproblemofhousedivisiondidnotexistfortheancients.Theydidnotseethe
signsasseparatefromthehouses.Thehousesweresimplyrolesthatthesignstookondepending
upontheirrelationtosomepointthatmarkedoneofthesignsasbeingthefirsthouseorplace
("place"isthepropertranslationofthewordthattheancientsusedforhouseasweusetheword).

Ifthatwordsoundsfamiliar,itshould.Itisthebasisoftheword'horoscope',anditsliteralmeaning
is"hourmarker,"not"watcherofthehour"asoftenstatedinthetexts.Thehourmarkerwasany
pointthathadtheabilitytomarkasignasafirsthouseorplaceforsomepurpose.Inmodern
astrologywehavesunsignastrology,atechniquenotwidelyrespectedbyprofessional
astrologers.Yetinsunsignastrologyweseeanancientpracticeused(simplemindedlytobe
sure)inamoderncontext.InsunsignastrologytheSunisahoroskoposinexactlytheancient
manneritmarksthesignoftheSunasafirsthouseorplace.Allothersignsbecomehousesor
placeswithrespecttothesignoftheSun.Theonlyproblemwithmodernsunsignastrologyisthat
thesolarhoroskoposwassupposedtobeusedtodescribeanative'sfather,notthenative,and
thenonlyifthenativewasborninthedaytime.
TheancientsintheWestusedtheAscendantandthePartofFortuneasthemajorhourmarkers.
TheancientsoftheEastinIndiausedtheAscendantandtheMoonistheprimaryhourmarkers.
WhatisinterestinghereisthatthePartofFortuneisapartassociatedwiththeMoon!Apparently
thesepracticesarerelated.
ThefollowingisaquotationfromPaulusAlexandrinusa4thcenturyauthor:
"AndFortunesignifieseverythingthatconcernsthebody,andwhatonedoesthroughthecourseof
life.Itbecomesindicativeofpossessions,reputationandprivilege."
AndVettiusValenswholivedataboutthesametimeasPtolemywrotethefollowing:
"...theLotitselfwillpossessthepoweroftheHoroskopos,thatoflifethetenthzoidion[sign]from
this,thepoweroftheMidheaven,thatofreputationthe7th,thepoweroftheDescendantthe4th,of
thesubterraneouszoidion,andtheremainingplaceswillpossessthepowerofthe12regions."
Inanotherplacehewrote"Wehavealsofoundthe11thplace[signcountedasahouse]from
Fortunetobeanacquisitiveplace,abestowerofbelongingsandgoods,andespeciallywhen
beneficsareuponitoraretestifying[aspecting]."
Thesestatementsareholdingupinpractice.IhavefoundthatthesignofthePartofFortuneandits
rulergiveverygoodinformationonprofessionasitrelatestomakingmoneyalongwiththetenth
house(countedintheusualmannerfromtheAscendant).ThetenthsignfromthesignofthePart
ofFortuneisalsoverygoodforhelpingtodescribetheactualsocialrolethattheoccupation
serves.TheeleventhsignfromtheParthasaspecialroleindeterminingbothhowwellandby
whatmeansoneearnsmoney.Astrologerswhoactuallyearnmoneyfromdoingastrologyhave
beenseentohaveMercuryinthesignofthePartofFortune,ortheeleventhsignfromthePartof
Fortune,orrulingeitherofthese.MercuryistheancientrulerofastrologybeforeUranuswas
discovered.AndIwouldhavetosaythatitstillworks!TheancientwritersalsosaidthatthePartof
Fortuneandthehousesderivedfromithadtowiththebody,health,andactionsthataredone
spontaneouslyoronanemotionalbasis.
AnotherinterestingFortunahouseistheseventh.Whileitmayhavesomethingtodowith
relationships,itsprimarysymbolismseemstoderivefromitsbeingtheoppositiontothePart
itself,andtheeffectisstrongerifapointintheseventhFortunaplaceisclosertotheexact
oppositiontothePartofFortune.Oneoftheoldestsignificationsoftheseventhhousewasdeath
becausetheSunsetthereanditslightwasextinguished.TheFortunaseventhofcourseisnota
sunsetpoint,butsincethePartofFortunehassomethingtodowiththebody,theoppositiontothe
Partseemstohavesomethingtowithillnessandphysicalproblems.
MuchmoreworkneedstobeonthePartofFortune,andthiscanonlybeconsideredataste.
