A World Without Sounds

People are born with many different conditions, cant see well, cant talk well,
even who cant hear well. Thats not the only way people have problems with hearing,
there can be an accident that can cause hearing loss or even it just might be age.
Audiologists help people of all ages for checking in a process with a hearing test and
after that trying to help with a treatment or a ear product depending on the results.
Hearing is part of our five senses, people who are not affected in any of their
senses especially hearing, normally take it for granted. Unless we are affected in
hearing loss, people don't think about the advantage they have for example hearing
conversations cleary and not asking to repeat what the other person was talking about,
or being able to listen to your favorite music clearly.

Marcos-Hernandez 4
The meaning of of an audiologist is a doctor who is specialist with hearing
loss, also who does hearing test and helps people to find a solution for the amount of
hearing loss that is cause to their ear. Audiologists education is that they must earn
doctorate in order to begin practicing. Audiology is a four year program, that the classes
include Anatomy and Physiology of Peripheral Hearing. Other classes are
Psychoacoustics, Signals systems and acoustics for the communication sciences ,
Biological foundation of speech and music, Amplification, Clinical practice and Clinical
practicum class.
Basically for an audiologist pathway is to graduate and for their career is to earn
a Doctoral degree from a CAA accredited program. Then take and pass an examination
call Praxis, this examination you can take any time during applying. After that submit an
application for certification in audiologist to ASHA. This can happen between May.1 till
August.31. Then have the choice, in choosing membership. That includes a review
process that takes up to a 6-8 weeks. After that the final process is to be awarded
Certification of Clinical Competence.
The duties of an Audiologist for every patients is that, they examine hearing,
balance and related ear problems. Then asses the results of the examination and give a
diagnose of the problem. After that they determine the treatment that is the best fit for
the patients, another thing would be fit and program for the hearing aid, in the specific
degree of hearing loss for the patients.
There is a good amount of people who think that any type of hearing loss you
can fix it with hearing aids. Even though that is true for some people, there are cases
where the hearing aids can even cause more damage.

Marcos-Hernandez 5
The different types of hearing loss are three basic types of hearing loss. That are
call Conductive , Sensorineural and Mixed. Conductive hearing loss is when sound is
not sent to the outer ear canal to the eardrum, also the tiny bones that are call Ossicles
of the middle ear. Conductive hearing loss makes sounds that are softer harder to hear.
The possible causes that can cause Conductive hearing loss is fluid in the middle ear
from cold or it can be allergies. Also an ear infection in part of Otitis media or in by poor
eustachian tube function. Another reason is because of a hole in the eardrum or even to
much earwax. These are just some reasons that can cause Conductive hearing loss.
The second type of basic hearing loss is SNHL or short for Sensorineural
Hearing Loss. This most likely happens when there is damage in the inner ear or also
in the nerve pathway. In most cases SNHL is not medically or surgically corrected.
SNHL is the most common type of basic hearing loss, which is permanent. Some
possible cases of SNHL are drugs that are rotic , or even hearing loss that runs in the
family. Even aging can be the cause for SNHL, also exposure to loud noise.
Sensorineural hearing loss reduces the ability to hear speech that is loud enough to
hear but it may still be unclear. The last type of basic hearing is called Mixed hearing
loss. This only happens when a conductive hearing loss happens, meaning when it is
combination with SNHL. Mixed hearing loss is when there is damage in the outer or
middle ear and in the inner ear or it can even be in the auditory nerve.
Other descriptors associated with hearing loss are call Bilateral Versus Unilateral,
Symmetrical Versus Asymmetrical, Progressive Versus sudden hearing loss, and
Fluctuating Versus stable hearing loss. Bilateral Versus unilateral meaning is hearing
loss in both ear. Unilateral hearing loss meaning is when one ear has normal hearing

Marcos-Hernandez 6
but in the other ear there is hearing loss. Unilateral hearing loss can be caused by
genetic or hereditary by family, also an outer or middle even inner ear abnormality.
Symmetrical versus asymmetrical means the configuration and degree of hearing loss
are the same in each ear. Progressive versus sudden hearing loss is when hearing loss
gets worse every time. Fluctuating versus stable hearing loss is when hearing loss
changes over time. This means over time it can get better but out of nowhere
sometimes it gets worse .
Many people have different degree of hearing loss, some are severe than others.
Normal range is -10 to 15. After that is gets to different degree of hearing loss. Slight
hearing loss is range 16 to 25. Then Mild hearing loss is range 26 to 40. Moderate
hearing loss is range 41 to 55. Moderately severe hearing loss is range 56 to 70.
Severe hearing loss is range 71 to 90. The last on is Profound hearing loss that is rang
of 91+, this one is when you really can't hear tones.
There are many options of hearing products that can help specific hearing loss.
There are all types of sizes, the ones you can't even notice and the ones that you can
notice easily. There are two types of hearing aids the ones that are call In-the-ear
custom product those are the hearing aids that are made custom for the patient that
are put in the ear inside the canal. The second type of hearing product is call Behindthe-ear product that has a receiver behind the ear that captures the sounds. It all
depends in people's decisions what ear product they want but it's more important to
choose which one you can hear the world clearly again said Dr. Megan Watson
The In-the-ear custom product there are five different products that are made to
invisible to a little noticeable. The first one that is very less noticeable that is completely

Marcos-Hernandez 7
invisible is call Lyric this product is an extended wear . This is the only hearing aid that
you have to go to an audiologist for they can put it on and take it off and change the
battery. Lyric is mostly for mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. The second ear
product that is invisible is call Invisible-in-Canal that is short for IIC. This ear product is
useful for people with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. The third ear custom
product is call Completely-in-Canal that is short for CIC. This ear product is specific for
people who have mild to severe hearing loss. The CIC is the first In-the-ear custom
product you can start to notice. The forth ear product is call In-the-Canal short for ITC
or it is also called Half Shell that is short for HS. This product is for people with mild to
severe hearing loss, this one is more noticeable than Completely-in-Canal. The last Inthe-ear custom product is called Full Shell that is short for FS. This ear product is for
people with mild to severe hearing loss. These are the five In-the-ear custom product
that are available for people with hearing loss.
The second type of hearing aids are Behind-the-ear product, this one has four
different types of products. The first one is call Receiver-in-Canal, that is short for RIC.
This ear product is the one that has the smallest receiver behind the ear. This product is
mainly useful for people with mild to severe hearing loss. The second type of product is
call Open Fit Behind-the-Ear that is short for Open Fit BTE. This product is for mild to
severe hearing loss. The Open Fit BTE dose not has a great difference is size than
RIC.. The third product is call Standard Behind-the-Ear that is short for Standard BTE.
This product is for mild to severe hearing loss, Standard BTE you start to notice the
difference of size for the receiver. The last one for Behind-the-ear product is call Power
Behind-the-Ear, that is short for Power BTE. This product is for moderately-severe to

Marcos-Hernandez 8
profound hearing loss. This product has a bigger receiver and are normally wear by
older people.
There is many options for people who are affected in hearing loss, people don't
realize the importance of human five senses. To be able to look, smell, touch, taste and
to be able to hear are each one very important. Hearing is a big part of human's five
sense, being able to hear the tv or music or even you family. Can be change very
quickly, if not getting checked at least every year for a hearing test.
