THE POSTMODERN MOVEMENT

During the 1920s architects started to believe that, in order to achieve beauty in
contemporary terms, building forms should be determinated by their functions and
materials. Abstract painting and sculpture influenced the visual aesthetic of modern
architecture and buildings began to considered as a volume of space surrounded by
light and thin walls instead of heavy mass made of bulky materials.
With the emigration of a number of important german architects to the United States
of America drng the 1930s, the nation became the leader in modern architecture.
During this period architects design were infuenced by new technological
developments, such as prefabricated construction.
During the 1950s, modern architecture was considered anonymous and it began to
recieve criticism for its disrespect of regional building traditions, As a resul, the new
generation started to looking for individual forms of expression, even if great
importance was still given to structure and materials. The task of contemporary
architecture is to celebrate the transformation of building into art, by understanding
the limitations and possibilties of building thanks to the aestethic preferences and the
ideological beliefs of the architects cultural environment. Postmodern did not actually
become a movement until the late 1970s. It combined new ideas with the traditional
forms, mixing different architectural styles.
