NICOLE
FOGEL
Nicole Fogel was born and raised in Los Angeles by her parents, Sheila and Steven. She graduated from
Beverly Hills High School and went on to attend Chapman University, majoring in business administration.
After graduating, she worked in fashion and public relations. This led her to combine her social skills with her
corporate expertise and Nicole founded Whatever Whenever, a corporate and celebrity gifting company.
While her life was filled with so many positives coming from her career, family and friends, Nicole began to
struggle with pain that at times was debilitating. She saw some of the top specialists in the community, but
none of their treatment plans helped. In fact, her symptoms worsened. Then in 2007, there finally was a
glimmer of hope when Nicole had her first consultation with Dr. Daniel J. Wallace and after thorough testing
and examinations was diagnosed with lupus.
Her path has not been an easy one but knowing the cause was step one toward managing the difficult
symptoms she had been enduring. She underwent knee and hip surgeries as well as multiple infusions and
chemotherapy. She faced her illness head on determined to not let lupus take over her life and her trust in
Dr. Wallace was key to her improvement.
When Nicole learned that Dr. Wallace had founded an organization to bring greater awareness to the disease
and fund research toward more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for lupus, she did not hesitate to get
involved. Nicole and her mother, Sheila, met with the staff at the Lupus LA office and were hooked!
They learned about the different events Lupus LA organized, one of which was Team Lupus LAs participation
in the Los Angeles Marathon. In 2013, Nicole started Team Fogel and took part in the LA Big 5K. Three years
and three marathons later, she has raised over $50,000 for Lupus LAs research funding and programming. She
also volunteers at the organizations Get Lucky for Lupus LA annual poker tournament. Nicole generously shares
her journey with friends and other lupus patients to bring greater attention and fundraising to this devastating
disease.
Currently, Nicole is also her paternal grandmothers primary caregiver. Nicole is one of four children and
currently lives in Los Angeles with her beloved dog, Theo.
Lupus LA is pleased to present the 2016 Woman of Achievement Award to Nicole Fogel.
SHEILA
MILSTEIN
Sheila Milstein is highly regarded for her career achievements and community leadership. She is also one of
the nicest people you will ever meet!
A Los Angeles native, Sheila was the only child of two wonderful parents, Rose and Ted Lieberman. She was
raised in a home where great significance was put on making a difference for others. She graduated from the
University of Southern Californias School of Education and was a teacher for five years. Her vocation was
indeed her avocation. However, after her two daughters were born, Melinda in 1969 and Nicole in 1973,
family came first and she focused on raising them.
In 1995 Sheila married Roger Milstein and the past 21 years have been filled with much happiness for them.
One of their greatest pleasures is traveling, and Sheila owned and operated her own travel agency for many
years. After selling the company, she began working with New Act Travel. And once again her vocation is
her avocation!
However, with all of her accomplishments, Sheila has also faced challenges and perhaps the biggest was when
Nicole was diagnosed with lupus. Seeing her child struggle with the pain of this debilitating disease and
having to go through knee and hip surgeries as well as numerous infusions and chemotherapy made Sheila
determined to become an advocate for bringing greater awareness to the illness and helping to raise money
for lupus research. When she learned that Nicoles physician, Dr. Dan Wallace, had founded an organization
dedicated to that very mission Lupus LA she and Nicole immediately became involved.
In addition to helping bring in much needed dollars, Sheila has reached out to her relationships in the travel
industry to join her efforts. She has secured great hotel packages for silent and live auctions and gift bag
giveaways for guests attending events.
Lupus LA is pleased to present the 2016 Woman of Achievement Award to Sheila Milstein.

What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the
skin, joints, blood and kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other
foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference
between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed
against self.
Lupus is NOT contagious, rare or cancerous.
Research data shows that between 500,000 and 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with lupus.
Although the cause of lupus is unknown, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to lupus,
and know that pregnancy and environmental factors such as infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, extreme stress
and certain drugs can play a critical role in triggering lupus.
Lupus affects one out of every 1,000 women in the U.S. and 90% of lupus patients are women. Lupus is also
more prevalent in African Americans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans.
Only 10% of people with lupus have a close relative (parent or sibling) who already has or may develop lupus.
Only about 5% of the children born to individuals with lupus will develop the illness.
Lupus can be difficult to diagnose, as the symptoms come and go and mimic many other illnesses. Some symptoms
of lupus can be transient joint and muscle pain, fatigue, a rash caused by or made worse by sunlight, low-grade
fevers, hair loss, pleurisy, appetite loss, sores in the nose or mouth or painful sensitivity of fingers to the cold.
Although lupus ranges from mild to life threatening, the majority of cases can be controlled with proper
treatments.
While medical science has not yet developed a method for curing lupus, new research brings unexpected findings
and increased hope each year.
iscoid (Cutaneous) Lupus is always limited to the skin. Approximately 10% of all cases of lupus are discoid lupus.
D
It is identified by a rash that may appear on the face, neck, and scalp. Discoid lupus is diagnosed by examining a
biopsy of the rash. In discoid lupus the biopsy will show abnormalities that are not found in skin without the rash.
Discoid lupus does not generally involve the bodys internal organs. Therefore, the ANA test, a blood test used to
detect systemic lupus, may be negative in patients with discoid lupus. However, in a large number of patients with
discoid lupus, the ANA test is positive, but at a low level.
In approximately 10% of patients, discoid lupus can evolve into the systemic form of the disease, which can affect
almost any organ or system of the body. This cannot be predicted or prevented. Treatment of discoid lupus will not
prevent its progression to the systemic form. Individuals who progress to the systemic form probably had systemic
lupus at the outset, with the discoid rash as their main symptom. It should be noted, however, that many individuals
with systemic lupus can have discoid lesions, but this is not true discoid lupus.
Drug-Induced Lupus occurs after the use of certain prescribed drugs. The symptoms of drug-induced lupus are
similar to those of systemic lupus. The drugs most commonly connected with drug-induced lupus are hydralazine
(used to treat high blood pressure or hypertension) and procainamide (used to treat irregular heart rhythms). Druginduced lupus is more common in men who are given these drugs more frequently. However, not everyone who takes
these drugs will develop drug-induced lupus. Only about 4% of the people who take these drugs will develop the
antibodies suggestive of lupus. Of those 4%, only an extremely small number will develop overt drug-induced lupus.
The symptoms usually fade when the medications are discontinued.
Lupus is Americas
least recognized major disease.
Connective Tissue Diseases and Overlap Syndrome is an autoimmune process that has features of more than one
rheumatic disease (e.g., lupus and scleroderma). Although lupus most often occurs alone, many people with lupus
also have symptoms characteristic of one or more connective tissue diseases. In this circumstance, a physician may
use the term overlap to describe the illness.
The connective tissue diseases are a family of closely related disorders and include:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus)
Polymyositis-dermatomyositis (PM-DM)
Systemic sclerosis (SSc or scleroderma)
Sjogrens syndrome (SS)
Various forms of vasculitis
These diseases have a number of common features:
They affect females much more frequently than males.
They are multi-system diseases, capable of affecting the function of many organs.
They overlap, sharing certain clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormalities.
Blood vessels are the most common target injury in all of these diseases.
The immune system is abnormal and accounts, at least in part, for the observed tissue damage.
About L UPUS LA
Lupus LA, a non-profit health organization, was founded
in 2000 by Daniel J. Wallace, M.D., attending physician
in the Division of Rheumatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center and a clinical professor of medicine at UCLAs
David Geffen School of Medicine. Lupus LA serves the
needs of people with lupus and their families in Los
Angeles County and across Southern California. With
offices in Beverly Hills, Lupus LA has a full-time staff of
five and an annual operating budget of $1.5 million.
Lupus LA raises funds for its patient programs, local
rheumatology fellowships and research partner, the Lupus
Research Institute (LRI) - the worlds leading private
supporter of innovative research in lupus. Since the year
2000, Lupus LA has raised $10,000,000 for the cause,
primarily through special events the LA Marathon, the
Orange Ball, Get Lucky for Lupus LA, and the Hollywood
Bag Ladies Luncheon.
Raising awareness is also an important part of the Lupus
LA mission. While lupus is widespread, awareness and
accurate knowledge about it are lacking. Research shows
that although 1.5 million people in the U.S. have lupus,
nearly two-thirds of the public knows little or nothing
about the disease. In fact, more Americans have lupus
than AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell
anemia and cystic fibrosis, making it one of this countrys
most prevalent medical problems. In Los Angeles County
alone, there are over 60,000 people suffering from lupus.
Rheumatology Fellowships
Research
Lupus LA believes that research is the key to a future without
lupus. Medical research is an important part of Lupus LAs
mission and Lupus LA is continually working toward meeting and
exceeding our research goals of $200,000-$400,000 annually.
Lupus LA makes a difference by being one of the leaders in
supporting scientific medical research through our grant-making
partners at the Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) formally known
as the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) and Alliance for Lupus
Research (ALR). To date, Lupus LA has given over $4,000,000
to fund important novel and translational medical research.
