A Message from the Chairs

Dear Friends,
We are so excited that youre joining us for Lupus LAs 14th Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon! By
attending today, you are helping to raise critical funding research for lupus.
This event is designed to embrace fashion as a force for fundraising. Today, youll see models clad in the latest
collection of Ferragamo strutting across the stage, but not before having the opportunity to browse through some
highly coveted handbags. With the help and generosity of so many, we have scoured, sourced, and scored some
stunning handbags.
But we cant speak of luxury bags without paying homage to a Lupus LA volunteer by the name of Joan Robbins.
Joan works hard to support the cause by securing haute couture purses and one-of-a-kind fashion packages for
the live auction. So it seems fitting that she will be receiving the third Adam Selkowitz Outstanding Volunteer
Award today.
Were also here to bestow three extraordinary women with the 2016 Woman of Achievement Awards. Nicole Fogel
and Sheila Milstein are this amazing mother/daughter team who work tirelessly together on behalf of Lupus LA.
Terri Seymour is also being recognized today for her help in raising awareness for Lupus LA all over the world.
Also, a big thank you goes to Jenni Pulos and Jon Kelley for serving as our luncheon hosts today. We want to
give a special thanks to our fashion sponsor, Salvatore Ferragamo. Thank you to those who donated to the silent
auction. It really means so much. It is a monumental task to put together this chic assortment of designer,
celebrity and gently used handbags that come to us through the kindness of Lupus LAs many friends and
colleagues.
Finally, we want to extend our appreciation to all of you our generous luncheon guests for being Hollywood
Bag Ladies. We cant do it without you. Thank you for making the time to attend Lupus LAs 14th Annual
Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon!
Enjoy the afternoon!

NICOLE
FOGEL

Nicole Fogel was born and raised in Los Angeles by her parents, Sheila and Steven. She graduated from
Beverly Hills High School and went on to attend Chapman University, majoring in business administration.
After graduating, she worked in fashion and public relations. This led her to combine her social skills with her
corporate expertise and Nicole founded Whatever Whenever, a corporate and celebrity gifting company.
While her life was filled with so many positives coming from her career, family and friends, Nicole began to
struggle with pain that at times was debilitating. She saw some of the top specialists in the community, but
none of their treatment plans helped. In fact, her symptoms worsened. Then in 2007, there finally was a
glimmer of hope when Nicole had her first consultation with Dr. Daniel J. Wallace and after thorough testing
and examinations was diagnosed with lupus.
Her path has not been an easy one but knowing the cause was step one toward managing the difficult
symptoms she had been enduring. She underwent knee and hip surgeries as well as multiple infusions and
chemotherapy. She faced her illness head on determined to not let lupus take over her life and her trust in
Dr. Wallace was key to her improvement.
When Nicole learned that Dr. Wallace had founded an organization to bring greater awareness to the disease
and fund research toward more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for lupus, she did not hesitate to get
involved. Nicole and her mother, Sheila, met with the staff at the Lupus LA office and were hooked!
They learned about the different events Lupus LA organized, one of which was Team Lupus LAs participation
in the Los Angeles Marathon. In 2013, Nicole started Team Fogel and took part in the LA Big 5K. Three years
and three marathons later, she has raised over $50,000 for Lupus LAs research funding and programming. She
also volunteers at the organizations Get Lucky for Lupus LA annual poker tournament. Nicole generously shares
her journey with friends and other lupus patients to bring greater attention and fundraising to this devastating
disease.
Currently, Nicole is also her paternal grandmothers primary caregiver. Nicole is one of four children and
currently lives in Los Angeles with her beloved dog, Theo.
Lupus LA is pleased to present the 2016 Woman of Achievement Award to Nicole Fogel.

2016 Woman of Achievement Award

SHEILA
MILSTEIN

Sheila Milstein is highly regarded for her career achievements and community leadership. She is also one of
the nicest people you will ever meet!
A Los Angeles native, Sheila was the only child of two wonderful parents, Rose and Ted Lieberman. She was
raised in a home where great significance was put on making a difference for others. She graduated from the
University of Southern Californias School of Education and was a teacher for five years. Her vocation was
indeed her avocation. However, after her two daughters were born, Melinda in 1969 and Nicole in 1973,
family came first and she focused on raising them.
In 1995 Sheila married Roger Milstein and the past 21 years have been filled with much happiness for them.
One of their greatest pleasures is traveling, and Sheila owned and operated her own travel agency for many
years. After selling the company, she began working with New Act Travel. And once again her vocation is
her avocation!
However, with all of her accomplishments, Sheila has also faced challenges and perhaps the biggest was when
Nicole was diagnosed with lupus. Seeing her child struggle with the pain of this debilitating disease and
having to go through knee and hip surgeries as well as numerous infusions and chemotherapy made Sheila
determined to become an advocate for bringing greater awareness to the illness and helping to raise money
for lupus research. When she learned that Nicoles physician, Dr. Dan Wallace, had founded an organization
dedicated to that very mission Lupus LA she and Nicole immediately became involved.
In addition to helping bring in much needed dollars, Sheila has reached out to her relationships in the travel
industry to join her efforts. She has secured great hotel packages for silent and live auctions and gift bag
giveaways for guests attending events.
Lupus LA is pleased to present the 2016 Woman of Achievement Award to Sheila Milstein.

JOAN
ROBBINS

Joan Robbins is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University where she majored in broadcasting. After
graduating she began her career at Channel 29 in Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Los Angeles
and worked at MGM on the hit TV series CHiPs, The Mike Douglas Show and The John Davidson Show.
As her career progressed, Joan was the Head of International Marketing and Promotion for Telepictures/
Lorimar Telepictures and the Manager of Development for Harmony Gold. She held various positions as Talent
Executive and Producer for The Ron Reagan Show, One On One with John Tesh, Preview and The Crusaders.
In 1994, while battling colon cancer, she became the first employee of Byron Allens company Entertainment
Studios, where she has risen to President, Talent Relations and Co-Producer. In addition to still working
at Entertainment Studios, she is now co-hosting a local show, The Invincible A List with Vince & Joan in
Philadelphia. She is the recipient of a CLIO Award, two Broadcast Promotion Association Awards and a
national Emmy. She was awarded the highest alumni award last year from Pennsylvania State University, The
Alumni Fellow Award.
Joan has volunteered on the Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon committee for the past five years. She is
instrumental in putting together the popular New York Fashion Week package that is auctioned off each year.
Her dedication to Lupus LA has resulted in over $50,000 raised for lupus research and programs. In addition
to her volunteer work with Lupus LA, she also supports Comedy Cures, sponsors a scholarship at Penn State
Abington and contributes to various cancer funds.
Lupus LA is pleased to present Joan Robbins with this years Adam Selkowitz Outstanding Volunteer Award.

In simple terms, lupus erythmatosus

develops when the body becomes allergic
to itself. Immunologically speaking,
it is the opposite of what takes place
in cancer or AIDS. In lupus, the body
overreacts to an unknown stimulus and
makes too many antibodies or proteins
directed against the body tissue.

Daniel J. Wallace, M.D.

What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the
skin, joints, blood and kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other
foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference
between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed
against self.
Lupus is NOT contagious, rare or cancerous.
Research data shows that between 500,000 and 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with lupus.
Although the cause of lupus is unknown, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to lupus,
and know that pregnancy and environmental factors such as infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, extreme stress
and certain drugs can play a critical role in triggering lupus.
Lupus affects one out of every 1,000 women in the U.S. and 90% of lupus patients are women. Lupus is also
more prevalent in African Americans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans.
Only 10% of people with lupus have a close relative (parent or sibling) who already has or may develop lupus.
Only about 5% of the children born to individuals with lupus will develop the illness.
Lupus can be difficult to diagnose, as the symptoms come and go and mimic many other illnesses. Some symptoms
of lupus can be transient joint and muscle pain, fatigue, a rash caused by or made worse by sunlight, low-grade
fevers, hair loss, pleurisy, appetite loss, sores in the nose or mouth or painful sensitivity of fingers to the cold.
Although lupus ranges from mild to life threatening, the majority of cases can be controlled with proper
treatments.
While medical science has not yet developed a method for curing lupus, new research brings unexpected findings
and increased hope each year.

MAIN TYPES OF LUPUS

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is the most common form of lupus and can affect almost any organ or system
of the body. For some people, only the skin and joints will be involved. In others, the joints, lungs, kidneys, blood,
or other organs and/or tissues may be affected. Generally, no two people with systemic lupus will have identical
symptoms. Systemic lupus may include periods in which few, if any, symptoms are evident (remission) and other
times when the disease becomes more active (flare). Most often when people mention lupus, they are referring
to the systemic form of the disease.
The American College of Rheumatology criteria for defining SLE:
Butterfly rash
Discoid rash
Sun sensitivity
Oral ulcerations
Arthritis
Serositis
Kidney disorder
Neurologic disorder
Blood abnormalities
Immunologic disorder
Positive ANA
A person with four of the 11 criteria may be diagnosed with SLEall four need not occur at the same time.

iscoid (Cutaneous) Lupus is always limited to the skin. Approximately 10% of all cases of lupus are discoid lupus.
D
It is identified by a rash that may appear on the face, neck, and scalp. Discoid lupus is diagnosed by examining a
biopsy of the rash. In discoid lupus the biopsy will show abnormalities that are not found in skin without the rash.
Discoid lupus does not generally involve the bodys internal organs. Therefore, the ANA test, a blood test used to
detect systemic lupus, may be negative in patients with discoid lupus. However, in a large number of patients with
discoid lupus, the ANA test is positive, but at a low level.
In approximately 10% of patients, discoid lupus can evolve into the systemic form of the disease, which can affect
almost any organ or system of the body. This cannot be predicted or prevented. Treatment of discoid lupus will not
prevent its progression to the systemic form. Individuals who progress to the systemic form probably had systemic
lupus at the outset, with the discoid rash as their main symptom. It should be noted, however, that many individuals
with systemic lupus can have discoid lesions, but this is not true discoid lupus.

Drug-Induced Lupus occurs after the use of certain prescribed drugs. The symptoms of drug-induced lupus are
similar to those of systemic lupus. The drugs most commonly connected with drug-induced lupus are hydralazine
(used to treat high blood pressure or hypertension) and procainamide (used to treat irregular heart rhythms). Druginduced lupus is more common in men who are given these drugs more frequently. However, not everyone who takes
these drugs will develop drug-induced lupus. Only about 4% of the people who take these drugs will develop the
antibodies suggestive of lupus. Of those 4%, only an extremely small number will develop overt drug-induced lupus.
The symptoms usually fade when the medications are discontinued.

Lupus is Americas
least recognized major disease.

Get in the loop!

Connective Tissue Diseases and Overlap Syndrome is an autoimmune process that has features of more than one
rheumatic disease (e.g., lupus and scleroderma). Although lupus most often occurs alone, many people with lupus
also have symptoms characteristic of one or more connective tissue diseases. In this circumstance, a physician may
use the term overlap to describe the illness.
The connective tissue diseases are a family of closely related disorders and include:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus)
Polymyositis-dermatomyositis (PM-DM)
Systemic sclerosis (SSc or scleroderma)
Sjogrens syndrome (SS)
Various forms of vasculitis
These diseases have a number of common features:
They affect females much more frequently than males.
They are multi-system diseases, capable of affecting the function of many organs.
They overlap, sharing certain clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormalities.
Blood vessels are the most common target injury in all of these diseases.
The immune system is abnormal and accounts, at least in part, for the observed tissue damage.

About L UPUS LA
Lupus LA, a non-profit health organization, was founded
in 2000 by Daniel J. Wallace, M.D., attending physician
in the Division of Rheumatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center and a clinical professor of medicine at UCLAs
David Geffen School of Medicine. Lupus LA serves the
needs of people with lupus and their families in Los
Angeles County and across Southern California. With
offices in Beverly Hills, Lupus LA has a full-time staff of
five and an annual operating budget of $1.5 million.
Lupus LA raises funds for its patient programs, local
rheumatology fellowships and research partner, the Lupus
Research Institute (LRI) - the worlds leading private
supporter of innovative research in lupus. Since the year
2000, Lupus LA has raised $10,000,000 for the cause,
primarily through special events the LA Marathon, the
Orange Ball, Get Lucky for Lupus LA, and the Hollywood
Bag Ladies Luncheon.
Raising awareness is also an important part of the Lupus
LA mission. While lupus is widespread, awareness and
accurate knowledge about it are lacking. Research shows
that although 1.5 million people in the U.S. have lupus,
nearly two-thirds of the public knows little or nothing
about the disease. In fact, more Americans have lupus
than AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell
anemia and cystic fibrosis, making it one of this countrys
most prevalent medical problems. In Los Angeles County
alone, there are over 60,000 people suffering from lupus.

In addition to raising money, Lupus LAs events raise

awareness through extensive local, regional and national
media coverage - in print and on TV, radio and the
Internet. This is made possible through the support of
Hollywood both celebrities and industry executives.

LUPUS LAS PATIENT PROGRAMS

Support Groups
Adult support groups in Alhambra, Baldwin Park, Crenshaw,
Irvine, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Ontario and Sherman Oaks,
and a Spanish-language group in our Boyle Heights office.
Pediatric support group at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles in
English and Spanish to help children and parents learn how to
cope with the challenges of living with lupus.

Patient Conferences and Education

Patient education, including the Latest on Lupus patient
conferences and workshops on lupus-related topics
throughout the year.
During Lupus Awareness Month (May), we coordinate
activities to raise awareness of lupus, and encourage others
to do the same.

Resource and Referral

Rheumatology Fellowships

Physician referrals and recommendations.

Each year, Lupus LA is committed to partnering with a local

institution to fund a rheumatology fellow specializing in lupus
patient care, treatments and research.

Individual consultations with clients to determine how to

best manage their disease, helping them to understand their
diagnosis, identify symptoms, explore treatment options and
deal with other issues, like insurance.
Resource identification to help cover basic living expenses,
including rent, food and utilities, as well as identify programs
that provide personal assistance, therapy and job training.
Emergency grants up to $500 annually, which enable families
affected by lupus to purchase life-saving medication and pay
overdue bills. Lupus LA is the only organization in California
to provide financial assistance to lupus patients.
Grants for children and families with limited financial resources
to attend The Painted Turtle summer camp, where children
with lupus and other serious medical conditions celebrate just
being kids.

Research
Lupus LA believes that research is the key to a future without
lupus. Medical research is an important part of Lupus LAs
mission and Lupus LA is continually working toward meeting and
exceeding our research goals of $200,000-$400,000 annually.
Lupus LA makes a difference by being one of the leaders in
supporting scientific medical research through our grant-making
partners at the Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) formally known
as the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) and Alliance for Lupus
Research (ALR). To date, Lupus LA has given over $4,000,000
to fund important novel and translational medical research.

The American College of Rheumatology Workforce Study

estimated that about half of practicing rheumatologists will retire
within eight years, and that by 2025, there will be a shortage of
2,600 rheumatologists in the U.S. In light of these staggering
numbers, Lupus LA is committed to the training of new doctors
in the field of rheumatology in Southern California.
In 2013, Lupus LA established its first such fellow by creating
the Lupus LA/Cedars-Sinai Rheumatology Fellowship Program
at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center focusing on both research and
patient care. The two-year fellowship has ended and our fellow,
Vaneet Sandhu, MD, has now moved on to a junior faculty
position with the Loma Linda School of Medicine in the Division
of Rheumatology. Dr. Sandhus major clinical and research
interests involve lupus and related autoimmune disorders.
She will be setting up lupus clinics at the medical school
that emphasize the diagnosis, treatment and management of
these diseases, as well as teaching medical students, interns,
residents and fellows. We are proud of her accomplishments
and see Dr. Sandhu as a much needed resource who will provide
clinical excellence in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
In July 2015, Lupus LA began its next fellowship at Childrens
Hospital Los Angeles. This is a three-year fellowship
specializing in pediatric rheumatology in patient care. There
are approximately 200 pediatric rheumatologists in the country
and most are concentrated in large urban areas. Pediatric
rheumatological disease diagnosis is growing exponentially and
the need for trained doctors and clinicians is desperate.

A Message from Senator Feinstein

Dear Friends,
It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to all who have gathered for the LUPUS LAs 14th
Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon.
Since its inception, Lupus LA has been a strong advocate for the individuals and families affected by lupus.
Through Lupus LAs fundraising and awareness campaigns, it has been an exceptional resource for supporting
medical research. There is no doubt that its efforts will continue to benefit countless individuals and families for
years to come.
